I noticed the bongos - you can tell Kirky J is back on the scene!

Holy shit, this is good. I got goosebumps at the end. Reminded me a little of the end of "In This Bed I Scream."

There are things he does with his guitar that invariably make the hair on the back of my neck stand up. He does a lot of them in this track.

Ha...I didn't even notice the bongos until I listened with headphones on. I like the bass right after "rip in your jeans" @ 2:03. I've gone from liking to really liking this after 10+ listens.

Wow, I really love this song! Don't know when the last time was I felt so satisfied with a Prince release. More of this, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!!

If this track is any indication of what's gonna be on Free Urself, I find it very promising

I don't know abuout that but it DOES feel like a logical extension of AOA, as if another layer was added to the sound. Or some sort of crazy hybrid between AOA and Plectrum. I like the direction Prince took with AOA and am happy to see him expanding on that sort of sound. This track is thick. Lots of layers. Deceptively simple on first listen but you hear something new every time you play it. That's my favorite Prince and I think this is agreat track (although I hate the abrupt fade out at the end).

As most of you all know, I am very picky when it comes to any new Prince. The thing I did with this new joint is to listen to it once yesterday. I gave it time to sink it and I listened to it again very carefully again today. Try muliple listens, you may agree that it is a very good song. Right up there with the best on Graffiti Bridge. Forget the lyrics, just fall for the melody. The tune is good. Keep this up and we have something.

I agree. I listened to it a couple of times yesterday and then put it away. Just listening to it now and it's a keeper. It sounds like it has an extended part ala Laydown so if that's the case I would love to hear the rest of it.

If this is an indication of what Free Yourself is like, I'm game. I just hope that there is more consistency than on PE. There were some songs on there that didn't fit at all.

Does anyone think "U Got the Look", "Let Me Feel U Up", "Sex" or even more respected tunes like "Raspberry Beret", "Let's Pretend We're Married" and "Housequake" are anyone's answer to "Blowin in the Wind" or "Maggie's Farm"? I love all the songs I listed but not because of the lyrics. Prince's lyrics have been super cheesy for a LONG time in a lot of cases.

You're comparing apples to oranges here. A funk jam doesn't need great lyrics in order to be good. Sex Machine and Hot Pants don't have great lyrics, but I love 'em to death. Prince CAN write great lyrics. I just wish he did it more often. Have you noticed how both in Baltimore and Hardrocklover (seems to be one word) he talks about his guitar? It's as if he has nothing else left to write about. Like others, I'm looking forward to the FreeUrself album (if there's going to be an album), but I hope there will be more to it than noisy funk jams.

Agree to disagree I guess. I was just pointing out that a lot Prince songs that people consider to be classics have goofy as fuck lyrics and that there's more to a song than the words. I don't see where I'm doing "apples to oranges" at all but OK. Everything doesn't have to be "There's A Riot Goin On" or even "What's Going On".

This song is rather bad ass IMO. A really nice extension of what he was exploring with AOA, where I felt he recaptured some of his magic, only a little harder and thicker. I thought he rather had something with AOA but if I have a crticism of that record it's that it lacked a certain depth - a bottom end and a litle more bass/funk/rawness. It was missing an edge in places. This song feels like a strep in the right direction to me. He threw some guitar and bass into the AOA template and it really works.

I am one of the most vocal critics of his lyrics (I'm a writer, so I listen closely to them) - and I am 100% fine with this song. I think the first verse is pretty terrific, in fact.

Indeed--and that's the Puck I was thinking of when I read Puck Face. And it's pretty close to the one Prince pulls sometimes (I don't feel like looking, but we've all seen it).
