With me, historically, I've viewed Prince as being this musical, superman. This person who has so much talent and creativity that they can come up with exciting, exceptional music, 99.99% of the time. For the past few years though, I've been facing the reality that Prince is getting older, and even though i do enjoy about 70% of his recent output, creative wise, he doesn't appear to be the same as he used to be. Just a few months ago though, i realized that it really is OK if he has in fact lost a step or two. I don't know about other people but that acceptance was a self-revelation. I pretty much realised that I could either enjoy and accept the greatness(in its entirety) that is Prince, or i can take it all(no remasters, recent, lackluster output, treating former associates like redheaded stepchildren, etc.) personal, and get my draws, panties, or whatever, in a bunch. I will say this though. I don't know what's going on with the remasters and what not, but maybe Prince revisiting that part of his life's journey, could be a good thing for him. Both personal and professional. Maybe there is a bigger plan and purpose(beyond just getting the legal ownership back)for him getting those particular masters back.
Edited for a little clarity.

I guess when someone is so intent on not repeating the past and always striving forward, at some point you will get to a crossroads where there is no where else to go. The talents have done everything they can do. Im not saying Prince's well is dry, but he doesnt have much room left for anything new because he has done so much already. Perhaps that is why he has a lot more misses these days because he is so intent on not looking backward, he has left himself with very little left to work with that he hasnt done before. Even his so called retro albums (MPLSound and 20Ten) had to be different and not sound like his former self. I think Condensate is the perfect example of being true to your past in the modern day. Rather than being afraid of what they sounded like in the past, the Time embraced it and produced (to me anyway) a great album that was both retro and relevant to the time period. But it seems Prince isnt ready to do anything like that.... Not yet anyway.

. Note that the original version of "Vavoom" he gave to the radio station (and which T obtained on a CDR) is slightly different from the released version (and IMHO better), even though this isn't mentioned on Princevault. © Bart Van Hemelen

I like Rich Friends, Cause & Effect and Turn Me Loose.. TML to me is one of the best things he's (not) released in the past 10 years. Vavoom on the other hand I don't think I've listened to it since I first heard it. There was nothing redeemable about it. After listening to X's face a few times its started to grow on me slightly, but its still not a fave of mine. What if is more my vibe. Change it one more time..

Not really. Every generation says that about the music that preceded theirs. "Kids these days" and all that. I mean, look at the bullshit that was popular in the 70's. For every "Superstition", "It's Only Rock N Roll", "Flashlight" and "Stairway to Heaven" you had a "Disco Duck", a "Kung Fu Fighting" and a "Muskrat Love", and those latter songs usually owned the radio.
.
In the 80's, for every "When Doves Cry", "Every Breath You Take" or "Pride (In the Name of Love)", you had a "Stars on 45 Medley", a "Physical", or a "Flashdance".
.
In the 90's, for every "Jeremy", "Smells Like Teen Spirit" or "Give it Away", you had "Macarena", "Achey Breaky Heart" or "Ice, Ice, Baby". Brian Adams. Ace of Base. There was a lot of shit getting in the way of good stuff.
.
Even in the 60's, where eveyone says rock/pop peaked, you had the Archies "Sugar, Sugar", the Monkees "I'm a Believer" and "Hello Dolly" in the top 20 most popluar songs of the decade.
.
I think it's telling that most remember MJ, Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Madonna, The Police and U2 as defining the 80's but put Prince in an almost separate category. Music today is as good as it's ever been. I think we're just gettin old, y'all.

I must say...very well said and so very true. (except for the getting old part! Age aint nuthin but a number )
The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

I'll have 2 agree.......but u have 2 search for it. I have a LOT of good new music, but I have 2 comb thru a lot of junk 2 get to it. It seems like that wasn't the case years ago. I spend a time going through cd's to find the good stuff, but it is there. FOOLS multiply when WISE Men & Women are silent.

Music is for the young. Teenagers and young adults. As you get older, you have less time for it and start to wax nostailgic for the "good ole' days" when "music was music". My parents weren't wise to Prince back when I was queing up and cutting school/work to purchase SOTT, Parade, Lovesexy and even Batman, D&P or GB for that matter. They were listening to the same stuff that they cared about in thier hey day and when the age I was at that time, still complaining about how music aint what it used to be.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
It was the same way then. I had to dig really hard for a lot of the shit I found. MTV was surprsingly a good source. I discovered Fishbone, Love and Rockets, the Red Hot Chille Peppers adn a whole lot of shit I wouldn;t have found otherwise. I remember the first time I showed my stepmother the "1999" and "Little Red Corvette" videos, she said "Who does this guy think he is, Michael Jackson?" Generation gap. "Music aint what it used to be". etc.
.
It's just generational but you may be right though. The "digging" part has become harder insome ways. But in other ways it's easier because of the internet/Pandora and what have you.

Shit, I don't have the longer version of Vavoom. I only have the shorter version and the one with the KDWB radio exclusive blah blah blah intro talking over it. I never even knew there was a longer version. http://www.princevault.co...php/Vavoom "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

m33kn3ss said: I follow some Prince fan Twitter accounts and heard the song last night on Twitter. I think it was a UK Prince fan Twitter account. It sounded more computerized and not like a typical Prince quality song. I wonder who this song is about. The fact that he threw in the chasing a banana and he sounded pretty passionate about it makes me think he wrote this song about someone who upset him, but I don't know since I only heard it once. Any thoughts? ----- I think this song is about Andy Allow and I think some of the AOA songs are about her as well.

If it is about her thats interesting. I was trying to decipher what he could be referring to by letting a monkey take a banana and get back in their cage. As in he let someone take what they wanted from him and he let them go back to their world. Change it one more time..

The "hate" here is just unbearable? Grow up and stop using that chilish term. A lie? It's called an opinion. We all have them. Go ahead, name one single song as good as Mountains from the last 20 years. There are none.

You're very, very sad if you think there hasn't been a better song than Mountains in the past 20 years. In fact, there are TONS. I suggest you go follow another artist. For real.

You cannot measure the quantity of songs using a measurement of weight. A song does not weigh anything. Please appropriate the correct unit of measurement when trying to quantify the number of songs, large or small, of which you factually speak. Grow up....

I've heard the song twice now. I feel if Prince wants to go into this dark digital (sounding) realm then the lyrics and vocals of the song also need to be dark. It's apparently about a breakup, but it's poppy, almost upbeat (even when he's singing about tears) and then ends with the banana lyrics and monkey sounds. That banana/monkey reference seems like a deeply inside joke, but maybe one that could've been conveyed with some clever wordplay or even digitize/alter the monkey voices so it's there but not super-obvious. . The sound I'd hope for in a song like this would be haunting. Like Power Fantastic, The Grand Progression, or hell - even as dark as Had U. Make me scared to listen to it, but make me want to keep listening to it . . . . This feels basically like a "sketch" that I don't feel should've been made public.
