What would "Purple Rain 2" actually look like?

It's always said that Prince decided not to release a 'Purple Rain 2' and released Around The World In A Day instead. But what would this PR 2 actually look like? Most of the outtakes from PR have alot of similarities to what ended up on ARTWIAD, but none really had the rock element that was on the album.

-

So whiat's you opinion on this alternate universe where Prince decided to release what you precieve to be a Purple Rain 2?

Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain.

It's kind of hard to imagine it because it would be very out of character of Prince to give people what they want so we're imagining what would Prince be like if he wasn't like Prince.... maybe Jesse Johnson's Revue or the Dance Electric?

Side A:
1. The Dance Electric
2. Moonbeam Levels
3. Posessed
4. Noon Rendezvous
Side B:
5. 100 MPH
6. G-Spot
7. All Day, All Night
8. Roadhouse Garden / Our Destiny
9. She's Always In My Hair

.

c&p from: http://prince.org/msg/7/279846 except I swapped Electric Intercourse for Noon Rendezvous.

.

.

This to me is like fantasy football version of answer to the question. I kind of imagined a Rick James' Street Songs / Throwin' Down situation where the follow-up album tries to cover much of the same atmosphere and carry on the same sound. Giving you a 2.0 version as sometimes happens with pop groups where the the follow-up is a 'more is more' kind of project. I expect the glittery paisley suits and fur shoulder pads to be turned up to max and it be an explosion of colour not just Purple. Then everyone would call Prince a one-trick pony and he'd fade into obscurity! I'm glad we got ATWIAD/Parade/SOTT.

He had a lot of outtakes from 1983/84

I'm listening to Paisley Park from the Parade open rehearsal at First Avenue where he starts out with the hard rock guitar solo and song has a more amped up feel to it.
I could easily see that on PR2 opening the album or America opening the album

.

Our Destiny

Roadhouse Garden

Wonderful Ass

Paisley Park

America

the Dance Electric

Manic Monday

Raspberry Beret

Feline

Sugar Walls(duet with Sheena Easton)

She's Always In My Hair

Girl

Pop Life

Wednesday (duet with Jill Jones)

Lust U Always

G-Spot

No he didn´t. At least not according to Bobby Z. who was once asked by Uptown magazine to name some outtakes.

Sure, there´s Possessed and Electric Intercourse, Roadhouse Garden and Our Destiny but that´s about it, right? Most other songs were recorded either much earlier or much later. Or they were songs for other artists (like Wednesday for Jill Jones, or all those other protege songs). But when it comes to Prince and the Revolution songs, I don´t recall that many outtakes.

I never really understood that "ATWIAD is not Purple Rain pt.2 " talk . Or how he could´ve easily continued with something similar to Let´s Go Crazy. But I don´t see ATWIAD as a big departure from Purple Rain at all. Except for the few psychodelic sprinkles on the title track and maybe on Paisley Park, the sound is not that different from the Purple Rain sound. Maybe less heavy and less in your face and less upbeat than most songs on Purple Rain but sound- and lyricwise Parade is the next big step as far as different style and sound go. The Ladder is very reminiscent of Purple Rain, Temptation is in a very similar vein as Darling Nikki, and Condition of the Heart, albeit longer and maybe a bit less catchy, is not that from the Beautiful Ones. Raspberry Beret and She´s Always In My Hair easily could´ve been on Purple Rain, too. Remember he had a cartoon version of the deleted barn scene from Purple Rain in the video for Raspberry Beret.

Strange how even Prince thought that this album was so different from Purple Rain.

In my opinion, the only thing that was different was his shorter hair. wink

I didn't say outtakes from the Purple Rain album just music from the 1983-1984 period, which also included some Family music

Because there are songs recorded/performed from that period that don't really have a specific direction. I'm not talking about the 200 or so songs Alan Leeds? or Magnoli said he was given

I agree, ATWIAD is very much an offshoot of Purple Rain, it's the direct result of the Purple Rain period. Almost like the Black album & Lovesexy

But with ATWIAD you hear the PR sound vibe rhythm just expanded in ways

Exactly.

I think there was even an article in Uptown magazine about the similarities of both albums. To me, they are not that different at all.

Yep, people always connect it with Parade, but Parade is nothing like ATWIAD, you just hear an even greater usage of instruments and sounds in Parade heard on ATWIAD.

.

Condition of the Heart = God the Dance Electric

Tambourine = Darling Nikki / Tick Tick Bang

the Ladder = Purple Rain / Free

Raspberry Beret = Take Me With U, Manic Monday

some others

ahhhhhhrrrgggghhhhh

Noooo nooooooooo not Graffiti Bridge nooooooo

The movie was pushed a PR2 but the music would not be considered a followup to the Purple Rain album

For me there is a big difference. I remember listening to ATWIAD for the very first time as a 13 year old and it was kind of creepy to me. Very introvert with a lot of 'dark' vibes, especially the first three songs. I see purple rain very much as the extravert side of Prince, a lighter vibe where ATWIAD is much more introvert.

That's interesting madelief because I thought the total opposite. I thought "PR" was a dark and somewhat angry record since the movie was sort of brooding. Where "Around" was a little more upbeat with the "radio friendly" pop songs. Some of those songs also could have been on "Parade".

well it could be culled from the 100 songs he recorded for the movie or the unreleased Prince and the Revolution album he himself mentioned

I never felt creepy, but an introverted feel I've said the same. Whereas Purple Rain feels like an album lived out in the city streets day & night. ATWIAD feels like the album of people who just came home from living abroad for a while, having experience 'life' and back home to tell about it

Thats a really good description. The album had a worldly growth. Sex had taken a backstep and he was thinking more spiritually and outwards looking.
