geez that sounds like something I'd throw together in 10 minutes on an off-day. Just completely uninspired musically. The lyrics/vocals probably took the longest time. P still sounds good vocally, but I hope he finds his mojo again sometime soon.
Not to say that this is a bad groove.. it just kindof goes nowhere. Probably just a lil funning around in the studio though, and P was like: 'ah well, let's release it so they stop bitchin 'bout the What If disaster'

post you song that you can throw together, if not..thennnnn
haha.. sure.. well Ok I lied, it took me more than 10 mins back then, but here's something:
See, this is why it's dangerous for one musician to call out another - particularly when you start throwing around phrases like "uninspired" etc. I mean, that's a decent enough track, you can clearly play and it's reasonably well-arranged and performed. But, it's nothing even slightly new or inspiring - just a rehash of what many have done before and is just too close to trying to sound like Prince or Clinton. It just doesn't really have its own personality and it sounds like it could have been made 30 years ago, rather than 3. Now, I'm not dissing it, but you've denounced one artist and then put up something that can't hold a light to even his worst work and you put yourself up for this kind of examination.
I'm a producer myself, but I don't go around cussing other musicians, whether I think that have as much talent as me or not - it's entirely irrelevant. I make the music I like and that I'm capable of and if people like it, it's a bonus - there really isn't much more to it than that.
...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

I LOVE IT. It sounds NOW and sounds like Prince at the same time.
WHEW. 24 hours of panic has been eliminated lololol
Edited to add....
This is kind of what Madonna tried to do on her album, but I feel she misses the mark.
this song is *really good* - this stripped down sound is one of Prince's most unique skill sets imo, he can make disparate sounds sound like music....and in contrast on Madonnas new album, she tries with a bunch of producers and there are good beats but they dont sound musical - the beats stand out as beats but never gel into songs.
Sweeeeet! Been waiting to hear more of this since we got a snippet on that yahoo thing. I dig this much more than What If. Here's hoping for an official release...
Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

Sounding like Prince or Clinton was exactly the point, as was the retro sound. It's just one thing I tried, and if you listen to my other musicm, you'll find that there's lots of other stuff I do too. I love the sound of lindrums and old analog synths (as well as new analog synths actually). Still I think I gave it a bit of my own flavour, which inevitably happens when you make up your own phrases and melodies and whatnot.
Anyway, your comment made me curious what kind of music you're producing, so I hopped to your website and listened to some stuff. And while what I'm hearing is well produced and current sounding with the latest plugins and electronic gadgets, I can't say it's brimming with a lot of personality either. There are some house tracks that sounded like the kind of stuff Eat Static has been making since the late 80's and some dubstep. really well produced, nice flat/loud mix (pancake mix, as I like to call it, since it's flat.. gettit? ), but not very memorable (to me).
But as you imply, each to their own. It's just that because I think Prince is so talented, it's a bit disappointing that he puts out stuff that you and me could produce without much effort ourselves.
Since we're throwing out jams what ya'll think about this? -

Thanks for posting man.. I think it shows potential! I especially like the second half, but I do think it needs some extra elements to turn it into a full fledged song. But good premise
Upon further listen this track sounds even worse. It's got some cool elements I guess but the unfinished vibemakes it sound sloppy & rushed to get it out.The arrangement needs to be fleshed out more, there's no variation at all. You can't even compare this to Phermone which is the stand out track on Come IMO .

Not bad at all and way better than "What If". This track and "U Know" could have been club bangers with the right remix and producer. The monkey sound bothered me though. I think Prince should just call up Pharrell after this 3rdeyegirl era is over. Each time I go to best buy I check out the Prince section and about 11 copies of AOA just sit there, week after week. It's sad.
If you go to yourlisten.com and type in exsface you can listen to the track (hope that is okay to tell people that)

I agree. U Know and The Ex's Face, are good songs, not great, but good. The reason is they have a new modern sound, it doesn't sound like Prince is trying too hard to fit in, like he did with his 90's hip hop tracks.

No, man. After Blurred Lines and the buzz that the Gaye estate might also go after Happy, I just do not want to see Prince and Nona in court.

Pharelle already tried mining Prince with Slave 4 U for Britney...Prince more than likely thinks Pharelle isnt worth his time and he'd be right. The ex's face is good...it could be longer and it needs a funky breakdown - but I think it sounds new & like Prince at the same time.
I think the monkey references in the ex's face refer to the ex being 'caged' in her own mind by going after the d*ck (banana) - instead of the more mature love Prince offers her.
Dude wants more than sex now - but he keeps shopping in the vapid section of the mall lololol
Im over 3EG ....they're like an albatross now. No more singing from Hannah. Her voice is thin and reedy and she sounds like a little girl.
Josh had 2 do the music 4 this track. It screams N.I. Maschine production.
It sounds though like Prince sat there and told him what he wanted. If he's going to update his sound he's got to use the tools that will do that....I don't think Josh came up with this by himself, that boy isnt that smart lololol
Sonically this track is more interesting than AOC regardless of who is responsible for the production. It's warmer. Cool little groove but to me it sounds like it could be the basis of what can be a great track. Needs hook, meat..

I like it though.
Me too, i love it...i hope he's headed in this direction....
I agree with Bart about Prince's house music, but I never liked that genre anyway. I liked Pheromone when it came out. Those Gold tracks came out much the same way as this: through radio shows. I like it that he's doing this and the internet makes it easier to search. But I don't think Ex's Face sounds very much like Pheromone- that one rocks much harder.
I was big into (underground) house and techno at that time and I thought Prince's attempts sucked big time. Admittedly the production sounds a bit dated now, but I always thought back then he could have a huge hit if he'd do something like this Princely sounding "wanna be":
.
Thanks for sharing!
.
and to clarify, I don't think pheromone sounds like the ex's face either, I just think the two songs are similar in that they're both trying to sound like modern grooves. I was curious to see how fans responded to that 20 years ago and I appreciate the reponses! Getting answers to that kind of question is one of my favourite parts of the org!
Don't understand why people are talking about "Prince's house music" and then citing Pheremone? Pheremone is anything but house music.
Prince house/techno-style tracks include Batdance, Loose!, The Human Body, I Wanna Melt With U etc......but Pheromone? Nothing like techno or house, more like electro-funk.
Anyway, "Ex's Face" takes its cues directly from dubstep, not hip-hop or house - some people really got their dance/electronica genres confused!
.
I'll definitely take your word for it, I admit I don't know much about electronic music. Like, I'm surprised that Pheromone is in a totally different genre than I Wanna Melt With U. That should tell you the level of sophistication I have when it comes to differentiating the styles of electronic music.
.
I did know enough to know that Ex's Face wasn't house, though. Let me try to retain a sliver of credibility
I've listened to it a few times now. It's not much more than a dashed off, half-baked funk jam like the stale High era material. The monkey noises are corny as fuck.
At least What If has passion. The song blows. But it seems like he cared for at least 10 minutes.

Maybe you better go listen to Montreux 2013 for a while...
