New topic Printablefusk said: the only way a song like this will ever be good is if the production is awesome. The production is not awesome. . To me this sounds pretty dated and amateur, but i'm curious about something: When Pheromone came out, did some people feel the same way about it as I feel about The Ex's Face? Like, IIRC, Bart thinks that Prince's house music is shitty. But is he the only one? Was there ever a contingent of fans who thought Prince's house music was just an inept copy of a trend that was already a few years old? 'Cause I love Pheromone, but maybe if I knew more early 90s dance music I'd say, "yeah I know what this song is trying to do, and it's doing it badly..." . I compare The Ex's Face to Pheromone because I think they both try to work in the same way. Neither of them win you over with a classic, catchy melody or a nice chord progression, it's all about texture and groove. I agree with Bart about Prince's house music, but I never liked that genre anyway. I liked Pheromone when it came out. Those Gold tracks came out much the same way as this: through radio shows. I like it that he's doing this and the internet makes it easier to search. But I don't think Ex's Face sounds very much like Pheromone- that one rocks much harder.

I like it, but hopefully there's another verse to come as like some of his songs lately, it doesn't go anywhere.

I'm listening to the song for the first time now! Last night I missed out because I went downstairs to do something and when I came back the station was all jammed up with traffic. I quite like the song although it's a lil bit repetitive. Like someone mentioned above it's quite like dorothy parker. But can I just ask you people something? Did he say 'baes don't age'? WHAT? hahaha I love him so much I'd heard all the banana jokes but the bae one caught me off guard lol!

But at least Pheremone has that cool ass breakdown. "Her eyes are closed, but there's no penetration..." "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."

I need to listen to this new song a few more times, but it's very tame by comparison. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

Pheromone is one of his best productions of the 90's, amazing song.
The Ex's Face, is a good production, sounds good, not great, but sounds good. Better than anything on AOA in my opinion.

Better - if only because it doesn't fall off and isn't judgemental - than What If. It's a bit monotonous, but I like it, party because of the monotony. It's got a slightly dark, dirty, gritty feel to it. Love Prince's vocals and his lil' monkey impression. At 1:16 there's this weird synth noise that lasts about 3 seconds that I wish went on and on. I don't really think this is Prince chasing trends, it sounds more like Prince (and Josh) making something of his (their) own. I like this more than most of AOA (besides Time, Way Back Home and the Affirmations). Hundalasiliah!

I liked it - cool little ditty.
Don't understand why people are talking about "Prince's house music" and then citing Pheremone? Pheremone is anything but house music.
Prince house/techno-style tracks include Batdance, Loose!, The Human Body, I Wanna Melt With U etc......but Pheromone? Nothing like techno or house, more like electro-funk.
Anyway, "Ex's Face" takes its cues directly from dubstep, not hip-hop or house - some people really got their dance/electronica genres confused! ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

I'm surprised if folk don't like this. It couldn't be much more Prince like!
I think it's ace
Stripped down, funky, great vocals.
Dub & Depeche Mode vibe. Love it.

Nice little bite of fast food... no lasting value. 'Laydown' from 20ten CRUSHES this, along with 'Art Official Cage' and 'Funk n Roll' from Art Official Age. "He's a musician's musician..."

I was big into (underground) house and techno at that time and I thought Prince's attempts sucked big time. Admittedly the production sounds a bit dated now, but I always thought back then he could have a huge hit if he'd do something like this Princely sounding "wanna be":
RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

My wife has never seen Prince in concert. With this amateur hour band, I'm almost afraid the show will be a disappointment. I just don't know.
Yes, it's still about the man. I know his horn section will be tight. The core is just weak. Sorry.

Upon further listen this track sounds even worse. It's got some cool elements I guess but the unfinished vibe makes it sound sloppy & rushed to get it out. The arrangement needs to be fleshed out more, there's no variation at all. You can't even compare this to Phermone which is the stand out track on Come IMO .

geez that sounds like something I'd throw together in 10 minutes on an off-day. Just completely uninspired musically. The lyrics/vocals probably took the longest time. P still sounds good vocally, but I hope he finds his mojo again sometime soon.
Not to say that this is a bad groove.. it just kindof goes nowhere. Probably just a lil funning around in the studio though, and P was like: 'ah well, let's release it so they stop bitchin 'bout the What If disaster' [Edited 3/14/15 8:21am]

I kind of know what you mean. Anyone who is a bit of a techno/(insert other dance genre) purist would probably regard Prince's "attempts" as lame. However, it's not like Prince was trying to make a purist techno/whatever track - he did what Prince has almost always done.....take a particular style or genre of music and then make a distinctly Prince track out of it, which is not the same. Hence, I always gave Prince a pass on that and enjoyed them for what they were. ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...
