Enough of this blindness. AOA is not a great album period Of course many opinions on albums depend on the fans struggles at the time that it is released thats why albums like Lovesexy and Rainbow children have such an extreme love hate relationship. But stop drinking the Koolaid people AoA is not a terrific album. It's decent at best. No classic tracks. Feels disjointed and the only track that will last is This could be us.This constant protest that it's his best work in years is not understandable by me. If he had released this a year after a previous album it would have been met with a lot less fanfare.

not saying I agree with you 100% but I think you are more right than not here. I'd put "Time" up there as well as a keeper.

I would call it blindness potentially if no one else in the industry was praising it and it was only fans here that did. However that is not the case...there are too many good tracks on is album to call it a bad album. It is not epic but it is not bad.

* Why do so many people feel a need to force people to feel what or how they feel? You dislike it--cool. I'd love to read a thread in which you simply deconstruct each song, showing where you think each fails. I really like AOA, giving it a B+ rating, but I'm willing and, in fact, enjoy listening to well-conceived analyses. Finally, no one is "protesting" that AOA is his best work in years. Yes, a lot of people feel that it is his best work in years, and they are using a "fan" site to express that pleasure. God forbid that a fan site actually has threads by people who enjoy the artist's work. But, along with fans on a fan site, AOA has received a lot of positive feedback from newspapers and magazines. Do you think that they (the newspapers and magazines) are "protesting" as well? So, again, I just don't get it. Will it make you feel better if more people dislike what you dislike? Some people like it. You don't like it. Why spend time attacking people who like it when you could be spending a happier or more pleasant time discussing something that you do like. Who knows? Maybe your analysis of something that you do like may cause those who like AOA to take a more critical examination of it. It's an idea that's so crazy damit that it just might work!

no its not a great album, it's not comparable to his 80's albums, it's not another sign o the times... the album doesn't have any real standout track, way back home is a beautiful concept song, a first time we heard prince sing a confessional about his life somewhat... but it's not a great song...
however the album is not bad. and for prince being 56 years old being in the business for over 35 years what more do you expect?
this is a GOOD album, it flows well and overall is listenonable and enjoyable overall as a whole.
will it be memorable, probably not, will it go down as something great ofc it won't. but for 2014, it's a good album.

There are sevealr tracks on it that are horribly bad, beginning with the first song. I can tolerate only three songs on it, which makes it the worst album of his entire career in my humble opinion.

It's not comparable to his 80s albums and that's the good thing about it:he is not trying to sound as if it is still 1984. No, Prince will never make another Sign O'the Times. That was then, this is now. The best tracks on AOA are the ones where he is not repeating himself.

Not one of Prince's albums had the unanimous perception of being great. But don't disrespect me or anyone else that feels AOA is a great album just because you don't feel the same about it. The snobby, cynical, way people articulate themselves in these online forums is over done. There are tons of people who think AOA is great, there are tons of music critics that think it;s great. If you're butt hurt over it then that's your own personal issue. You don't think it's great and that is fine but don't be a jerk about it, have your opinion without the cynicism. Create a debate that invites people of opposing views to express themselves and have a constructive discussion about a piece of art, which is subjective and has no actual 'greatness' or 'garbage' distinction without us listening and talking about it together. I agree. I'd even rather listen to Planet Earth over this sludge. I'll give him points for trying to be creative and having a cohesive futuristic theme throughout, but musically and vocally? NOO.. I never play this. The first Prince album released since I became a fan, somewhat of a disappointment. . I think a lot of people love it now just like all the love Lotus /Mpl got upon release, but it'll soon sink downwards into the 'just decent' area once the novelty wears off and newer albums will restart the cycle and be named "the greatest album since Gold!" [Edited 12/4/14 14:02pm] Maybe do, just not like did before

Enough of your nonsense, Art Official Age is his best album since he left Warner Brothers period.

I think Clouds and The Breakdown are bonefide post-Warners (you know what I mean) classics up there with the usual acknowledged post-1996 tracks. Why Clouds wasn't promoted more widely as the lead single is a mystery to me, it's instantly catchy, and recognisable as Prince, sounds weird and odd but also modern and it's relaxed and confident not cloying or desperate. What more do you want?

1)"Art Official Cage" in time will go down as one of his worst lead-off songs- degenerates into noise
2)He ruins "Clouds" with the dialogue half way thru. "Hot" the cherry on top. 3) "The Breakdown" screams are insincere soul and unintelligible. 4) The chorus for "Gold Standard" lacks life with too much vocal layering 5) "U Know" gets skipped every time 6)"Breakfast Can Wait"-the chipmunk comes in way too loud and shrill and the song never recovers 7)"This Could Be Us"- rediculous lyrics (but u be playin'- talk like an adult) The Affirmation segues are too long "Funk and Roll" is barely a song I think this album had more "life" than 20Ten, Planet Earth, but those albums actually have better individual songs. People want Prince so desperately to be good again they are deluding themselves with AOA. Thats OK, I understand. [Edited 12/4/14 15:28pm]

If we are nit picking for every little detail I can do the same for The Gold Experience too...
Everyone has opinions, to say an album is good or bad is your right, but to enforce it is another thing... [Edited 12/4/14 15:57pm]

U be playin' is part of the famous meme that inspired the song. If you don't even know that, then it's not surprising the album went right over your head.

Not great but mostly very good ! I'm not quite sure all of the songs flow. Time, Way Back Home are amazing tracks. U Know, Clouds, What It Feels Like, Funk n Roll are very good- classic and modern. The 2 weak tracks for me are Art Official Cage and This Could Be Us. Gold Standard could be tighter though I love how seamlessly it goes into U Know. It's a shame this album couldn't find a larger audience because it's very enjoyable

Definitely a great album. I think that the affiliation with Plextrum Electrum brings it down. It is right there with 3121 and Musicology, but with more of an edge. I think that it is his best album since TRC.
