It's his best album since "The Gold Experience" in 1995.

He's put out 4 great albums in the nearly 20 years since TGE:

The Rainbow Children

3121

Lotusflow3r

Art Official Age

Of course many opinions on albums depend on the fans struggles at the time that it is released thats why albums like Lovesexy and Rainbow children have such an extreme love hate relationship.

No classic tracks. Feels disjointed and the only track that will last is This could be us.

I think Clouds and The Breakdown are bonefide post-Warners (you know what I mean) classics up there with the usual acknowledged post-1996 tracks. Why Clouds wasn't promoted more widely as the lead single is a mystery to me, it's instantly catchy, and recognisable as Prince, sounds weird and odd but also modern and it's relaxed and confident not cloying or desperate. What more do you want?

Gold Standard, U Know, This Could Be Us are also top notch, with a couple of other tracks being decent too. But opinions and all that, one man's Last December is another man's Life O' The Party.

THat makes the most sense on this thread.

Of course many opinions on albums depend on the fans struggles at the time that it is released thats why albums like Lovesexy and Rainbow children have such an extreme love hate relationship. But stop drinking the Koolaid people AoA is not a terrific album. It's decent at best. No classic tracks. Feels disjointed and the only track that will last is This could be us.This constant protest that it's his best work in years is not understandable by me. If he had released this a year after a previous album it would have been met with a lot less fanfare.

Without wading thru all the pages of back and forth, AGREED!

The only songs on TGE I listen to is P Control and Dolphin. The rest are forgettable. The Slaughterhouse is a much better album than TGE.

AOA is an excellent album. I would not even change the order of the tracks.

That would top Lotusflow3r for me, unless you're talking about Bria Valente's "Elixir" (No Troll!)

I had it on repeat and listened to it over and over for a few weeks after it came out. I slacked off and havent listened again for over a month until this weekend. I had time at home to play my vinyl copy straight through a few times and I enjoy it better now that I did at first. Something about it being broken up into sets of 3 songs and having to flip sides of the records made it have much more appeal than just listening to it straight through on my phone or computer. I enjoyed it very much and think it is one of my absolute favortie albums by Prince.

It's ok, it's boring. The Peach and Black 1999 review saddened me. The greatness is dead. Remember when he could just write bomb after bomb? He wrote When Doves Cry really fast. It takes him two years to rip off some other song. ha

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

^ Ok Nigel. Different opinions on The Gold Experience, I respect that:

But to me The Gold-album is top quality all the way through.

I even like songs like Shy and We March.

The Gold Experience....... includes so many styles and genres - sublime - and with the band in excellent shape. (Especially Michael B.'s drumming).

I love this album - 10/10 - an excellent experience. I love every single and funky note. Prince's last truly great masterpiece. Again, that's imo.....

No to shhh?
It just goes to show that there is never consensus on Prince and fans arguing their musical preferences is kind of silly. I detest P Control, yet it is your standout track.

I Hate U, Shhh, Shy, BJB are top notch as far as I am concerned.

At least Prince fans are still talking about TGE. My prediction is that in as little as a year, AOA will generate next to zero discussion.
