Overall for his career - NO Compared to the past 10 years - YES . It was a mixed bag, we got one great album and one kind of okay one. We did not get any of these promised remasters, the Purple Rain anniversary just came and went. He continued his usual paranoia over Youtube posts and bootleggers. He again gagged everything he could. He grew or bought a god awful dated as hell afro wig. (It's not 1974 anymore Prince!) He was on facebook and Twitter for a hot minute. He gave some decent shows and performances. . Overall a B- A good year, but needs to do better, still better than 2013 or 2011 (2012 has some very good concerts particularly in Australia). It would have been a C, if not for the superlative Art Official Age album. It pretty much gave us some new Prince classics and his first classic album since the Gold Experience in 1995. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Average year (of wasted opportunities) 4 Prince but a fantastic year 4 me!! One truly wonderful album & one so-so album. Plus Liv's album. I was privileged 2 attend ten concerts around the UK including Ronnie Scott's where P was six feet from me. Three great London fan parties where the purple party people be. I've had a blast so thank you Prince!!

Prince has not frustrated the fanbase to this level since 1996's Crystal Ball. He freaking announced a PURPLE RAIN remaster plus OUTTAKES was coming out this year. And then failed to deliver. Instead we got a... meditation cd mostly produced by some boring jackleg shit-hopper off Youtube??? Oh fuck this. Did that shit really happen? Oh yeah it did and some of the FAMS, actually say they prefer the fake-shithopper-masquerading-as-Prince tracks to those produced by Prince himself. Prince delivered two albums just LOADED with postshots and fugg-yous to his fanbase, and surprisingly, those fans didn't make it a top priority to buy a copy. Hmm wonder why?

For me is a big YES. 2 albums, very good live shows and I had even the chance to see 1 (+ great new leaks), well what could I ask more? PR remaster for me is not as important as 2 new albums. So yes, 2014 is a BIG prince year and there's still a month before it ends...

for me, no... i don't like the albums

How dare you speak that honestly (haterishly) regarding Prince??? It's not his fault your lying eyes see what they saw and your broken ears heard what they heard and you don't happen to think it's the greatest ever ever! That's YOUR fault! Just give him your money and stfu. You're not supposed to express your thoughts and opinions, unless they're of the blathering fawning variety. And scene.
[Edited 11/27/14 20:09pm] I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Yes, in the sense that getting two albums and a lot of leaks was better than the silence of the last few years. But FUCK NO in the sense that this year was a huge wasted opportunity. I love AOA. PE is okay. It was the damn anniversary of PR. He could have toured. He could have done something. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

I got to see Prince live for the first time since 2007, having thought since then that I'd never get a chance to see him live again, so that was fantastic.
2 new albums - PE is very good, AOA is awful, so a mixed bag there. I think if the Purple Rain remastered edition had come out and had decent extra tracks, etc, then it would have been a big Prince year. But as it is, no, probably not. No. It got off to a good start: he created a hype with 3rdEyeGirl in London, but for whatever reason lost the momentum and by the time the albums were released, nobody cared anymore. At the end of the year, when everybody starts making their "best of this year" top ten lists, I don't think we're going to see AOA anywhere but here on the org. [Edited 11/28/14 1:21am]

A very disappointing year. he stays the best performer on earth, but his new releases were mostly crappy, bwith ad choice of tracklist as usual, etc. He failed the comeback of the year with the cancellation of PR deluxe and with the double release of two craps the same day that are his worst flop ever. He just happened to regain his masters, like most of the artist did decades before him.

Musically, it was a great year even though one of the two albums was definitely not as good as the other. Even there, I give him points for collaborating with a group of protégées in a way that was empowering and leaving behind at least some of his past misogyny. Considering songs like Muse 2 The Pharaoh, it was a step up for his values and something long overdue, but it could also be that is why PLEL had too many chanted nursery rhyme melodies and uninteresting arrangements. AOA was, on the other hand, the best example of "Studio Prince" since TRC minus the preachy religiosity.
For those who still want him back as a commercially-potent artist, it was very disappointing yet the tea leaves were clear before it all started. Remember Prince NOT appearing in the Breakfast Can Wait video? He wanted to release a truckload of music but did not want to operate like an attention-hungry pop star. Prince didn't do the obvious commercial thing after Prince and Purple Rain, and I think he knows he's at his worst when he tries hard commercially (see Rave).
Since I'm so used to all this and I'm used to Mr. and Mrs. Everybody not sharing my love of various artists, I was not personally very disappointed. It would have been nice for him to regain some of his exposure but he's not actually dependent on the commercial success of his albums. I don't need validation from the general public to enjoy the art and music I like, so that's that.

YES for me | |

The PR re-issue was the cement to a great year, something lost on him

Yes, it was the last occasion to celebrate and to show to the people his wonderful carreer.

Why "Tictactoe" comes to my mind?
Aerogram said: he's not actually dependent on the commercial success of his albums. I don't need validation from the general public to enjoy the art and music I like, so that's that.
And that's exactly what makes him so special as an artist and a pure genius.
