Anji,a bit more feedback on your thread...
i think most of the fams responding to your thread are prince fans but they like other artists, too. it doesn't shock me that Prince isn't number 1 on a lot of people's list...he's BAD and great...but i know he's an acquired taste. (like most unique artists are) being with the guy from jump-street i will admit his worst period was the 90's. and that he's rebounding back into focus. i don't hold his down period against him cuz every BIG artist who's been at it 20 or more years is gonna have those periods when their material ain't up to their Skills. its like a painter-the longer you go the more chances you will go stale, repeat yourself etc etc. Every artist one my all-time list had those albums that SUCKED and made you think-what da hell were they thinking!!! but i look at one's entire output. when its all said and done-the GREAT ones reputation lasts long after they've left this EARTH. (witness, miles, jimi, lennon, marley, marvin sarah, ella sinatra..) prince's legacy will go on when the little guy is 6 feet under. which is why he's IMportant.

Prince is by far and away my favorite artist and his music has had the most profound impact on me thus far. But as I've said many times before, Prince prepared me to be open to so many other great artists whom he has listed as influences in the past. Even before Prince, I was exposed to great music, and since I have found Prince's music less affecting recently, I have opened myself to new artists and old artists I slept on before, as well as different styles of music. In short, I love a ton of artists, past and present. Among my favorites: Miles Davis Duke Ellington John Coltrane Horace Silver Bill Evans Cannonball Adderley Thelonious Monk Marvin Gaye Stevie Wonder Bob Marley Al Green Jimi Hendrix Sly Stone Isaac Hayes Earth, Wind & Fire Steely Dan The Police Sting Sade Chaka Khan Donald Fagen Digable Planets Public Enemy Erykah Badu Jamiroquai Jazzanova "one thing about music, when it hit ya, ya feel no pain . . ." I like a few: The Jacksons(was my first love to music)/ Michael Jackson(before I became hooked on Prince)/ Lenny Kravitz/ Stevie Wonder/ Sheryl Crow/ Aerosmith/ Madonna/ Mary J. Blige/ U2/ LL Cool J/
Jay Z/ Paul McCartney/ Elton John/ John Lennon/ Terrence Trent Darby/ Jody Watley/ Janet Jackson/ Kool & The Gang/ Earth Wind & Fire/ ...but The P man is still my #1. Lenny Kravitz is my second.

Wow, an entire thread and Ani Difranco doesn't get one mention. I can't say I like anybody's music more than P's but at times I get into different artists and give P a break. I've got a decent enough collection where I don't need to revisit Jughead or Tick,Tick, Bang.
As I alluded to,I'm feeling Ani at the moment. She's the only one I'm really into right now-- I love her vibe, spirit, and certainly her talent. Not long ago and still to some extent I was digging TRC and ONA. Before that Radiohead and Bjork. The only others I can say have had a major impact on me in any similar way to Prince (aside from Ani) are Jimi, Stevie, Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, Yes, Ice Cube (the younger years-- his and mine), and maybe Outkast. My favorite singer is still, to this day, Deniece Williams. How to categorize that I don't know so I'll just throw it out there.

Although I look up to Prince a lot, I would be lying if I said he's the ONLY great artist that inspires me.
Others include Sade, George Michael, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Stevie Wonder...etc. But you KNOW Prince is in a class of his own! He has done so much in terms of originality, and doing what HE feels like doing. Despite a recent decline in overall commercial popularity, I still believe he is an artist's artist...a force to be reckoned with in terms of musical creativity.

I do love other music as long as its not pop band nonsense.U2,No Doubt, and some hip-hop tracks are actually pretty cool but prince is just unique and does'nt conform like others do for money.

There are plenty of rides and attractions. Prince's music to me is like the wild, big rides...the roller coasters. A trip; an experience. They stand out and take you higher, lower, and faster-they loop you. As fun and exciting as they are, if all a person ever did was ride the roller coasters, then he/she truly hasn't experienced everything Cedar Point has to offer. It's all good. i know EXACTLY where you`re coming from
