With regret (so far) I am in agreement with the above comment based on the tracks I have heard.
Why am I listening to a young girl coughng, albeit with very little conviction, intermittenly throughout this song? Somebody get the girl some tunes and help Prince remember how to write one. (Just my opinion though "ain't nothing wrong with my ears")

A closer comparison rather than "Gett Off", would be "The Greatest Romance", which is entirely built around Craig Mack's "Flava In Ya Ear" riff, so much so that the original producer, Easy Mo Bee, includes Prince's track in his own production discography. |

I'm surprised so many people have a problem with autotune - he has used it in the past. He has been doing vocal manipulation since the eighties. No body seemed to have any problems with his Camille voice.

"broader audience?" Really? Songs by 56 years olds get almost no audience. If they don't capture the over 35 mindset, or really over 40 mindset, they get lost in the shuffle. "Fallinlove2nite" was not as bad as people say, but it had the sounds of modern pop fluff and went NOWHERE. U Know is NOT going to be the slightest hit, so there is no "broader audience."

I guess the difference is that those two songs have actual melodies and aren't tuneless garbage like this song. imho.

Yeah I don't understand why people still bother to peddle that absurd myth. I hear you, as though W&L introduced Prince to music altogether, when he was making music long before they showed up. Anyway, I actually like the beat of this song but could do without the autotune, and the annoying 'uh huh, uh huh'. I actually like this song better than that track 'clouds'.

The Guardian (for my money, the best newspaper in the UK) says that "U Know" is "a dazzling future soul groove" and "a return to form". Inclined to agree! |

Even some of my friends are sending me messages about how much they like the track. That doesn't happen often.

I'm a bit surprised that this sampling issue is so relevant to so many people on here. . We all know that Prince is a master on several instruments, so it's not like he has used this sample because he would have been unable to play this keyboard hook in the background himself (it's not exactly a Beethoven sonata...). If he liked this track and wanted to make it his own, sampling it and putting his own vocals on top was a consequent decision. As I have stated before, there is more original input by Prince composition-wise in "U know" than in most of his cover versions (live or studio) for which he mainly just changed arrangements. It's as if people go mad just because they read the words "sample" and "Prince" in one sentence...

Did Prince originally write this or is this a cover song? This track was written by Prince according to princevault, with (assumed) after it. [Edited 9/2/14 8:43am] "You always get the dream that you deserve, from what you value the most" -Prince 2013

Typically when I've heard auto tune it is to enhance someone's voice that can't quite hack it. Just because he's used it before doesn't mean it neccessarily worked, it may have for some, but I'd prefer the songs w/o, because it's super lame in my opinion. The camille voice seems more like an alter ego than a voice enhancement, just my pov. Seems like he's trying to keep up w/ the trends rather than set them, but it looks like the days of him trend setting are long & gone with the exception of his live performances.

This is comparable: http://www.whosampled.com...'s-Rap-II/ Ike's Rap II by Isaac Hayes was used as the backing track for Portishead's Glory Box (and also by Tricky's lesser known Hell is round the corner). Nothing 'creative' was done with the original sample, still the result is great. I'm liking the Prince one too!

Thank you, I got them.
After many listens, I still go back n forth with 'U Know'. At the 0:47 mark when he says "oh no he didn't"........ ugh. That phase and delivery came from the same mind that composed 'Anastesia' and many of the most profound songs of all time?! I need a shower after hearing that line. There is something almost hypnotic to the sound of 'U Know', to me. It's when I disect the parts and pieces that I raise an eyevbrow and ask myself 'what is he doin' here?'. Overall it's just not, right or wrong of me, what I was expecting or hoping for. 3121, Lotus, and MPL all surprised me in a good way, AOA- not yet.
