Hello all,

Just watching Purple Rain and didnt realize just how much of it was filmed in Los Angeles! Obviously most of the bike scenes are Los Angeles, but how many other locations through the movie can be sorted out? Im sorry in advance if this has been discussed!

Filming

Filmed almost entirely in Minneapolis, the film features many local landmarks, including the Crystal Court of the IDS Center (also shown in segments of the opening credits to The Mary Tyler Moore Show) and the legendary First Avenue nightclub. First Avenue was paid $100,000 for use of the club in filming; it was closed for 25 days.

Lake Minnetonka, the lake is located in Eagan Township, Minnesota I believe

Apollonia: Will you help me?

The Kid: No.

Apollonia: Pardon me?

The Kid: Nope... Wanna know why?

Apollonia: Nope.

The Kid: Because you wouldn't pass the initiation.

Apollonia: What initiation?

The Kid: Well, for starters, you have to purify yourself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka.

Apollonia: What?

The Kid: You have to purify yourself in Lake Minnetonka.

[She strips down, and runs towards the lake]

The Kid: Hey! Wait a minute! That's...

[She jumps in. She gets out shivering]

The Kid: Uh, hold it...

Apollonia: What?

The Kid: That ain't Lake Minnetonka.

The Huntington Hotel which Apollonia stayed in is located at 752 S. Main Street, Los Angeles, CA 90014. This was a late pickup shot and is shown in the movie to be across the street from First Avenue though it clearly is not.

A notable error, either geographic or taxi fare related, shows Apollonia running up (and bailing on) a $37.75 cab fare going from the Greyhound Station to the nightclub. In reality, they were just across the street from each other

I read something about the hallways backstage, that some where all those people filled after Purple Rain were not at 1st Avenue, but other scenes were

The house that was used for outside scenes was indeed filmed in Minneapolis. Right across the street from a good friend of mine. If you really want to see it next time you're in Twin Town, it's between 34th and 35th streets on Snelling avenue south (Snelling is between Hiawatha and Minnehaha Aves.) Peep the west side of Snelling on the 34th end of the block.

I didnt realize that the scene with Morris and Billy Sparks walking down the street is Los Angeles!! Im looking down the street and you can see that "Hotel Cecil" sign is down the street from the Huntington Hotel!! It looks like there is more of Los Angeles in this movie than Minneapolis, LOL!

When I met her in person (in SF) she said the water was freezing when she jumped into the lake and
that she had to do it more than once. She said she ended up getting really sick after.

Yeah, there is an interview with her on youtube and when asked where Lake Minnetonka really was she said that that WAS Lake Minnetonka. lol She also said that there was a sheet of ice on the water when she jumped in. No thank you, I would have passed!

Yes! I was there. They did a viewing of Purple Rain in theatre, a Q&A, a meet and greet, and a after party thing.

Sweet. I was hoping they had recorded some of the "singing along" with the movie. Did you meet Apollonia? I loved that interview, she seems so down to Earth.
