The way to look at this?
The song wasn't his best ever, but it was credible EDM and it got ok airplay with little fanfare and no album out. It proves that he could have hits if he did things more conventionally and released the first single of an album with a video and had it promoted to death like everyone else.
Whatever he's trying to do, I still enjoy the 3EG stuff way more -- this song was fun but I'm more into his rock and funk side.

Just because the song has fallen to 508 on Amazon sales chart does not mean we should be writing any epitaphs. Oh to hell with it, I am going to go back to taking care of my MyTalkingTom. I tried, Prince. Last one out turn out the lights. [Edited 4/7/14 18:40pm] All good things they say never last...

aaah, i feel bad now! if the song keeps climbing then there's no reason to stop posting

Agreed. Furthermore, "Happy" was also helped by an innovative yet daring (though successful) concept of the 24-hour video... Prince used to say "I don't follow trends, they just follow me"... I'll leave that one in the same place as Fallinlove2night. P. Release P.E for Pete's sake!!!!
'dre Tried many flavours - but sooner or later, always go back to the Purple Kool-aid!

In this YouTube dominated age, a music video would certainly help the song do well. |

He did all this for Musicology to be honest, and it sold the album but none of the songs crossed over and they had video play, especially Musicology the single, it even had speciall showings and shows around it, the album sold a legit million the other 1.8 million were give aways, which was ok that was part of the rule then. But the thing is that was a decade ago when CD's still sold very well, albums were still debuting with 200-500,000 weeks now that is a "blue moon" happening, you are lucky to see a record with 100,000 sold week one and that is with promotion. So it being a decade later, also Prince does not have the benefit of what he did then, a grammy performance with Beyonce tied into the 20th anniversary of PR, there is nothing on the table for the 30th anniversary of PR, and thats a shame even if he didnt want to be part of a rerelease to at least let something out to get some light on him. But this song is going nowhere, good or bad is not relevant, even a video would not help it, Rock N Roll love affair had a video and it faded into oblivion. Screwdriver was supposed to be a big deal but outside of US here no one cared. This year marks the 20th year since Prince's last crossover hit "Most Beautiful Girl" nothing since has come close to having that kind of impact across the board regardless of the "game" he was playing, Emancipation and all of its Promo had nothing to show for it single wise, barely getting RB play with "somebody" and "betcha by", "Holy River" went nowhere at Top 40. And sure there was RB play, "Call my Name" "Satisfied" "Future Baby Mama" etc...but these were far from Hit singles that got him any notice. Im just saying that its a different world now, Prince should be looking more at "albums" at this point, i know he prefers them, he said it on "arsenio" that he is old school in a singles market.
I just feel that everyone is latching onto something that isnt gonna happen, been there done that, we gotta accept reality of who he is and what the music world is like. We cant all complain and say charts dont matter and then cry when prince doesnt have a chart hit, well which is it? we care or we don't, if the album is good at least we got it from him, if it's not good and sells a few million what is the difference? "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

As I come to grips with the aftermath and the realization that Fallinlove2nite (currently number 540 on Amazon) is not going to be a hit I, with great hesitation, ask this question. Would a guest rap from Pitbull have helped. He could have called Prince Mr. 612, maybe tried to rhyme Pitbull with "adorkable". Threw the Spanish word for purple or funky in there. Was this a missed opportunity and is it too late? I am under the impression that Mr. Bull would read the phone book if the money was right. All good things they say never last...

Does anyone think Musicology was supposed to appeal to a pop audience? Why are RnB hits not considered a measure of success. Why is having the Lotus Flower project sit on the album charts for over a year with no promotion whatsoever considered successful? We all know the music world has changed a lot over the last decade ad the quality of music is much worst and the sales have continued to plummet. I do not expect P to have the bang up year he had with Musicology due to those conditions but writting him off completly is absurd since it has been done time and time again and he managed to prove all of his naysayers wrong. It is too early to write him off.

Awesome information. Someone has to keep this thread going until its inevitable appearance on the Billboard Top 100. I have given up for now and am currently in a tent at my local Wal-Mart lining up to be the first to buy a copy of the new PlectrumElectrum CD. I'm getting a lot of strange looks and interesting solicitations but I am undaunted in my endeavor to be the first person in Columbia, SC to own a copy of this soon to be classic. I think "Happy" is gonna be this year's "Blurred Lines"....it just keeps getting bigger and bigger! More airplay every week.

let's face it,folks...the only way that Prince could get a huge hit single right now,is for him to let Pharrell produce the song and have Jay-Z rap on it.

This song would have done much better had it been released the night of the super bowl (inlucing the marketing campagin it acutally had when it finally was released) along with a video and a couple of followup tv appearances.
