It wasn't promoted to sell more. Then Prince moved on 2 Rave In2....
bloody hell KCool' stop wearing those purple tinted specs! The Rave was a total fuck up of a project, a hugley compromised album - Pince WANTED a huge hit as per Santana - the songs were awful, Clive Davis was jerked around..of course P spat his dummy out & never admitted it was his fault. P promoted the hell out of it across TV shows he would never have been seen on [Ant & Dec saturday morning kids TV FFS!!]....but the songs were shit etc. He still has not learned a damn thing...the video should be done & released before the song was avilable to buy..it really is THAT fuckin' simple. I really feel L.A. Reid / Epic & the girls in 3EG [how frustrated must THEY be!!]
I LOVE P...but my God he is crap at marketing!!..even at the most basic level!!.
You & Bart are at the extreme ends of fandom..it actually tickles me!!..both welcome BUT crazy in your own way!!
[Edited 3/28/14 9:01am]
Clive didn't want it 2 b a hit! Its as simple as that. Gwen's label wouldn't approve of her being used 4 "So Far So Pleased"(it was the obvious lost hit, that could have been released as a single). That would have sent the project to MEGA platinum status. Prince lost interest after that & moved on( but not without gifting his fans with a remix version later) just like Clive did. I will say the project was a waste of Prince's time! Since Clive obviously tanked it on purpose! U win some U lose some. Nothing is guaranteed as a hit in the muziq industry anyway.
How much more video do U want of Prince?! Then a half hour sitcom of Prince on a future Emmy award winning per4mance! U can even download the appearance from "New Girls" on Itunes. The song is doing just fine on the charts without a video. In barely almost three weeks its about to crack the top 40! Then Prince can add another top 10 hit to his belt. will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. |

"Clive didn't want it 2 b a hit!" Exactly, you can come on this board a million times and try to explain the clueless orgers how this industry works but nothing penetrates thick skulls.
If Clive wants your project to suceed it will if he does not it won't
The biggest mistake Prince made was working with Clive in the first place. Huge waste of time as the CD received little or no promotion out of the gate.

I agree, With that , in business as in life, sometimes things work out, sometiomes they dont. TClive and Prince still respect each other. Prince was Clives GOH at one of hois Grammy Balls several years ago...after the Rave fiasco |

The main reason was that the "greatest romance ever sold" did not became the hit Clive and Prince
wanted ....
Wrong single choice!
Rave did not sell that bad with half a million in the US, but it was not a real success, that`s true...

Rave wasn't a hit for several reasons. The first single was a snoozefest and Prince was late with the video.Another reason is that (let's face it),the album just wasn't very good.It was a lame attempt to do what Santana did with Supernatural, but that strategy didn't work for Prince. |

I dont buy the argument that business' dont want to recoup their losses or advances and purposely tank a project..They may hinder a project if its coming up on a benchmark where payments need to be made but to tank it from the start and eat a loss; dont buy it |

So,Clive gives Prince $11 million just for the fun of it? He wanted the album to fail, right? That makes no sense.

Eye would want my new song 2 b getting airplay and hit status b4 Eye waste my money on a video. Wouldn't U????? No, because by that time it would be too late to write, produce, film, edit and distribute the video. The song would already be on a downward projectory by the time the video came out. This is especially true in Prince's case because like you said, he is quite busy.I would either have the video ready to go with the song; throw out a quickly-done live video for the song; or just not do a video at all. |

Exactly!
...and Prince was not happy about it's failure, either, and placed the blame at Clive's feet. There was even a post on Prince's website at the time about them needing to make good on the promise to send a single to the top of the charts when a promo of Man'O'War was sent to radio, IIRC. |

Clive was ousted from Arista not long after Rave was released! Now Prince is doing business with Clive's then replacement LA REID! Who has managed NOW to do more with one single, than Clive did with an whole album handed to him by Prince. Case closed!!!!

Stop making excuses Rave flopped because it just wasn't a strong album and the wrong first single was chosen.Prince is a notoriously difficult person to work with, especially back then when he was still very 'anti-record company'. |

Clive was ousted from Arista not long after Rave was released! Now Prince is doing business with Clive's then replacement LA REID! Who has managed NOW to do more with one single, than Clive did with an whole album handed to him by Prince. Case closed!!!!
The $11.million U talking is very debatable......
Stop making excuses Rave flopped because it just wasn't a strong album and the wrong first single was chosen.Prince is a notoriously difficult person to work with, especially back then when he was still very 'anti-record company'.
well ill agree on the first part of your statement about the quality of the album i beleive he believed Clive on what the focus shoudl be going against what he would normally do..he had 11 million reasons to make that decision though..The second part not so much,, out of a 37 year career, please point me to where he really has been difficult..My sister ran defjam for years and she knows err one. pg 69 (corp precense...Carm,Lisa and Bob http://books.google.com/b...mp;f=false
with that said, most people whom i've spoken to who have worked with him say he is a very pleasant, no nonsense, professional who doesnt suffer fools kindly. he asks for what he thinks he deserves..His professionalism has never been questioned.. He has a vision and he executes on said vision for better or for worse.. In reality, his last make or break album was DM. [Edited 3/28/14 17:15pm] |

Fallinlove2nite is this week at #3 in the US Spotify viral charts with over 34000 plays...
in the UK at#3 with 19000 plays...
Globally the song is at number five at the viral chart...
I had to look what the viral chart is:
"The 50 most viral songs on Spotify this week. Updated every Tuesday, virality is determined by streams divided by shares. "
Katy Perry with dark hoers in the US in comparison is #1 with 1.9 Million plays...

An insider heard an argument that Prince and Clive had,in which Clive told him "Everyone warned me about you".This was after Rave flopped,of course Everything is cool as long as Prince gets his way all the time, but all hell breaks lose if he is challenged,or if the project flops. He blamed Clive for the failure of Rave, but there are several other reasons for it's less-than-spectacular performance on the charts. |

there was a number of things that went wrong with ritjf ..wrong first single choice..that song was never going to be a hit...album track at best...the video was late (again) which didnt help...the album was banned from the uk chart because they made a mess of the release...cant remember the reason for it but it never showed on the uk chart because of it..and the first single came out after the album released in the uk as well..
and..of course..the album wasnt very good..apart from a couple of great tracks..as per normal for his albums in the last 20 years..it was just a mess from start to finish..
the late 90s was the worst period in his career for me...the personnel tragedy he suffered knocked him badly i think (as you would expect) and he seemed a bit lost to me during these years...he started recovering with the rainbow children and then 2004 he got back to being something like his old self with the hugely successful musicology tour.. |

so like he had an argument with Clive..You literally have one instance out of a 37 year career..Who said Clive was correct though? He is not the guy record companies or promotors are going to worry about being on drugs, bveing in jail and having an unruly crew..Whatever he may do pales in comaprrison to artist brandishing weapons on execs, not meeting commits cuz of rehab etc..THE business will always have a spot for him because unlike others he is an ultra rare talent..No debate needed |

Hey guys, here's an idea: discuss Rave and "Clyde" in your own special thread so we all get to the bottom of this important matter. |
