Radio Manager says that Prince is not acceptable

So I volunteer at the school's radio station (it's an alternative rock station) as a DJ and one day I asked the radio manager if Prince is acceptable to play since New Wave is a branch off of Alternative Rock and well we play some New Wave (80's new wave that is) but no Prince. The manager told me straight out no that he's not new wave so we can't play him.

i went to wikipedia and read him off the genres that Prince is in and well New Wave is one of them. He still didn't agree with wikipedia and how you can't really trust everything wikipedia says.

being a Fan of Prince I know that he IS New Wave (pre Purple Rain years that is). sure he's more funk and r&b but he DID create the MPLS sound which is basically a form of New Wave.

who agrees with me??

who agrees with him??

Love God. Love Music. Love Life.

I can't think of any prince songs off hand that I would classify as new wave.

I wouldn't expect to hear Prince on an alt-rock station.

Play him the original version of Tick, Tick, Bang. That oughta settle the question.

Whatever songs you think are New Wave, play them for the radio manager and see what he says.

Myself, I wouldn't place Prince in New Wave but I can see how some would.

he just doesnt like Prince and for him to say that Prince isnt new wave is a sorry excuse for him not being a fan because everybody that has ever heard SEXUALITY knows that this song is new wave all the way. I know because Ive been calling q100 radio station here in atlanta, georgia requesting rock n roll love affair and they will say " we dont usually play him but we will try and get it on" and they never play the song.

I think that is the gift and the curse with... his music is really eclectic. It's really hard to catagorize him in any one genre. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, I personally embrace this about him. Yea you can play a song like Bambi or even I'm Yours on an Alt Rock Radio station; Hell just throw them the Undertaker album. Then you could easily play songs like Kiss or LRC on a pop station and songs like Adore on and RNB Station. I think the issue lies with the ignorance of your Manager. I would say don't try to push it as "New Wave" and try to convince him that Prince can play any genre. Play him something like Dreamer, Endorphinmachine, Tick, Tick, Bang (1980 Controversy outtack version like Genesia previously mentioned), I Like It There, Pruple House, Fury (SNL) Good luck and let know how things work out

I've never been great at genres, but when I was a kid I used to buy magazines that claimed to be covering New Wave mainly, and Prince popped up there back in the early (pre-Purple Rain) 80's. Saw Andre there to--they seemed to think he was New Wave (not just because of the album title).

Don't really know though. I stopped thinking of him as anything but Pop years ago. Sure, lots of other things are there, but the mind that puts them together is a pop mind. Pop synthesises from everywhere, whatever works, with no bs purity of genre. A pop artist is pretty much open to everything. That's what Prince is. Or at least, what he used to be. If there's a weakness anymore, it's that it feels like he sets out to write a specific genre when he starts a tune. More often than he used to. So there's not as much surprise--certainly for us, as listeners, but I'm guessing he doesn't surprise himself much anymore either. That's probably sad.

It's hardly unique to Prince--lots of people lose the ability or desire to pull disparate elements together. But it seems more of a change for him, because the elements once seemed to disparate and it was so exciting to see them come together.

I like the idea of creating a list of Prince New Wave songs.

When I hear new wave, I think of Soft Cell, Blondie, early Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, Duran Duran, and Flock of Seagulls. So it's diverse, but the common themes are: a stripped down sound without emphasis on guitar solos or other showy instrumental playing, mechanical or romantic vocals (nothing flashy), repetitive synthesizer lines or slightly tinny guitar, and an 80s style of either post-punk with nerdiness mixed in or 80s swept-over hair and makeup.

With that in mind, musically, here's my list from most new wave sounding to least:

Sister
Let's Pretend We're Married
Annie Christian
Sexuality
All the Critics
When Doves Cry
Dirty Mind
Something in the Water
Controversy

To me, Delirious a rockabilly-gospel mix, and I agree that When You Were Mine is more pop (it's such a masterful pop song, basically done as really good demo on Dirty Mind). Yes, my list has some great guitar solos (Annie Christian) and showy powerful vocals (Something in the Water ...), but I think the mechanical, post-punk and/or romantic sounds dominate.

Gotta Stop (Messin' About) might qualify as New Wave.

Songs that could reasonably fit alternative rock format:

Dolphin, Interactive, Endorphinmachine, Chaos and Disorder, I Like It There, Family Name. I would play Family Name just to piss off the radio station manager.

Let me try a different tack.

What are the 5 or 6 top songs in rotation right now? Maybe that will give us a hint as to what the station considers "New Wave".

But absent that, I'd say you're best chances are songs from "Dirty Mind" and "Controversy".

The Cars famously got new wave into rock fan's stereos so leaving them aside for the moment... if you play the Cure and Duran Duran then you can play anything off Dirty Mind up to and including Purple Rain.

Alternatively just whack on Endorphinmachine and tell your manager to cop on.
