The Cars famously got new wave into rock fan's stereos so leaving them aside for the moment... if you play the Cure and Duran Duran then you can play anything off Dirty Mind up to and including Purple Rain.

Alternatively just whack on Endorphinmachine and tell your manager to cop on.

DING! There it is!

The answer, obviously, is to play Prince's version of The Cars' "Let's Go". As an added bonus, tell your listeners that's Orger Milty going nuts in the background!

You could play some alternative bands covering Prince, Foo Fighters "Darling Nikki", Of Montreal "Computer Blue", Dump "The Beautiful Ones", Souls "Take Me With You", Brett Anderson (Suede) "When Doves Cry", Sufjan Stevens "Alphabet St." and then throw some of the originals in. Private Joy is a great choice, also Beautiful Strange, Joy in Repetition, Brother Can U Paradigm? etc.

is this a college radio station?

kinda thought the point was to let the dj's play what they want, to get all that idealism out of their system before they got a real-world radio job.

People relate Prince to funk and pop but i think it is safe to say that albums like Dirty Mind,Controversy and 1999.so fact is Prince released more new wave music then the artist usualy associated with the term. Many of the new wave bands did one or two albums and they were gone.just play Let's Pretend we're Married and ask that d.j. What genre it is

And of course you can't get more New Wave than Missing Persons and Dale Bozzio, so you could add So Strong and Simon Simon if you were so inclined. I would sneak Prince music in and let them know after, school them cool

Don't forget The Knack. Their first album "Get the Knack" is not only great - "My Sharona" is the number one single from 1979.

Yeah, well...if you work hard and keep your nose clean (ie, play by the rules), it won't be Just Over Broke for long.

And that goes for any kind of job - even a volunteer one. Nobody's going to recommend a malcontent.

sorry Ufo but this time i can't agree.if we must label it ,it is safe to say that She's Always In My Hair is pop rock with a funky bass line.I don't see elements of new wave on that song.new wave is a post punk sound that is either synth pop oriented or it is the oposite a guitar based sound with hints of pung energy or some elements.i think Prince left the New Wave with the release of Purple Rain. There is also one Prince song that is very new wave Private Joy.Prince's punky vocal delivery ,drum machine ,toms, bass line =pure example of new wave

I think you need to accept that your station manager is interpreting "new wave" as "popular music by white people from the 80s that is neither heavy metal or top 40 pop."

I tend to agree with the posters saying that, while some of Prince's 80s stuff has some things in common with alt-rock, and even though a lot of alt-rockers like Prince, he is not considered an "alt-rock artist" by most people who are concerned with such things, like your station manager.

It's up to you if you want to work within such limitations. I'd be tempted to play Warm Leatherette three times per show but that's just me. Oh and make sure you use the Normal version not the Grace Jones one - The Normal were white, and thus, can be safely classified as New Wave.

Automatic, Computer Blue, All the Critics Love U, Something in the Water .... Start with those and just play them. Your manager obviously has no idea who Prince is

Oh and please don't play Tick Tick Bang Bang....please

New Wave evolved to the specifics of New Romance: from B52's to Blondie to Devo. It uses synth on catchy pop melodies often with a fat or funky bassline (check all the Duran Duran songs) and of course David Bowie. The vocals are effected, the flange, the synth, the pop structure, the sharp EQ, but ESPECIALLY those keyboards. It's like The Romantics or something (you know "Secrets While You Sleep)... Prince version.

Yeah fair point.

I guess based on the examples given we're talking 90's/2000's alternative rock with a few 80's classics that can't be ignored thrown in. Realistically i'd be surprised if a song like Raspberry Beret wouldn't be allowed.

I'd say When U Were Mine would be the best bet overall for a station like this.

If all else fails that Richard Swift cover of Paisley Park would probably work but this seems an unnecessarily covert way of getting prince out there.

yes it's a college radio station. the college had another station where they would let the DJ's play whatever they wanted from whatever genre but things got way out of hand that they went into only playing one genre of music and switch the name from Dangerous to Alt Radio. It's not FCC regulated but the advisors want the DJ's to act like it is so that excludes a lot of suggestions that you all are talking about for me to play since they have at least one cuss word that ruins the possibilty of it being played.

Love God. Love Music. Love Life.

I always wanted to make an 80s teen sex-comedy with that song playing over the opening credits. Luckily, I know that Prince would never allow it, anyway. razz

Just try playing him that one song, "She's Always in My Hair". It's the one Prince song that really breaks into a New Wave Synth pop mode without the falsetto, without the overt R&B funk elements. Without the the funk chords.

It's the most like Duran Duran, Aha, The Pretenders, The Romantics, etc...

In fact it is akin to when The Eagles guy, put out "Dirty Laundry" breaking oddly into a New Wave top 40 vibe.

Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.
