I was in high school 1983-87... new wave as a top 40 music genre was easily recognizable and it had gone mainstream. And back then I thought that with that one song, Prince had gone all the way (unlike hybrids which still had his Prince-isms) and succeeded at making a rock/pop song with strong catchy melodies and synth production ... New Wave.

You make it sound like just because there is use of syntheziers, it makes it new wave. I thi nk it is how and what melodies are used with the synth if it is used. And that woukld be something akin to Automatic. With Shes Always In My Hair, the guitar ois to the fore and the star instrument. Its straight for..oh wait. Im all of a sudden seeing and sort of hearing Nik Kershaw doing this.

You may be right. At the vvery least I guess She's is a perfect rock new wave hybrid. Or a rock song with new wave elements? Like Computer Blue (please do not comment on Computer Blue please!).
