What is the most expensive Prince record you've ever bought?

Mine is probably One Nite Alone - Solo Piano. If memory serves, I paid around $120 for it.

Sexy Dancer (Extended) cost me over a hundred bucks, too. And God (Instrumental) was close to that.

Come to think of it, I should probably have those indexed on my homeowners insurance. hmmm

Not much if i'm honest. I always bought albums/singles/whatever as soon as they were released, so it's only afterwards that they became valuable.

I'm sure there are records I have that have cost a bit, The double gold vinyl promo of The Gold Experience album is possibly the most I have paid for a Prince record, it was £40-50?? Can't remember really.

My collection is probably worth a lot of money now, but not at the time of purchase.

I don't have a copy of The War or The Undertaker on cd (just WAV rips) so it'll probably be those....when I get round to getting a copy.

I know of people who have spent huge sums on single items.

Back in the day, I bought a double disc pressed "soundboard" Japan Nude Tour bootleg from an ad in the back of Goldmine magazine. Paid $120 for it. Upon listening, it was very apparent that the source was not soundboard. It wasn't even a good audience recording. Audience boots were pretty much shit back then IMO (early 1990s), so I only collected soundboards. After that, I reassessed my collecting habits and scaled back how much I was willing to pay for something, sight unseen.

I did make a decent trade for that expensive-ass boot to another collector who was happy to take it off my hands, so all was cool eventually, but I never paid that kind of loot for a black market product again.

Luckily, many of the record show bootleg sellers had adopted a try-it before you buy-it policy and they had CD Walkmans to allow listening to their wares prior to plunking down the greenbacks. That seemed to be the way to go, and since Goldmine started black-listing bootleg ads after a while, record shows were pretty much the only way to get my live/unreleased fix. It was a sickness.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

My first copy of the Black Album (on cassette) sounded like crap, too. Fortunately, I didn't pay anything for it. lol

Yeah, I'm sure the most expensive RECORD I ever bought, I bought at a "record show". And I got a couple albums that sound like they were recorded from inside the pocket of someone's jeans, LOL.

I'd bet the most expensive ones I bought were the 4-album Small Club, and the Crucial album (because it allegedly had Miles Davis playing on it). But I don't think I paid $100 for either one. Probably around $50 - $75 max.

Yeah, you're right. I DID get my t-shirt.

And, except for the geeky "Founding Member" on the back, it's a pretty sweet shirt.

I've gotten compliments on the design.

Ouch!

I remember paying quite a lot for some of the old bootleg cd's, rushing home, only to find that they sounded like shit not as great as I hoped they would. lol

As you mention though, (good) record fair/show sellers would let you hear the disc (or tapes before them) before buying.

Boot buying was quite a stab in the dark in those days, good fun though.

The 2 most expensive records I purchased for my collection:

Little Red Corvette UK 12" sealed with spiral calendar-$400

Little Red Corvette UK 7" normal sleeve- $175

That is off the top of my head.

I guess Corvettes are expensive.

Purple Rain promo LP with purple vinyl and poster. 100.00 at the old Let It Be in MPLS. I was going to have the Revolution sign it at First Ave, but went with the Purple Rain tour program instead.

I paid a hundred and fifty quid for a 12" of Gotta Stop in the mid 90s I think that's the most I ever paid for a single item and was about the going rate back then.

Conversely I bought the 12" promo of The Pope/Pink Cashmere in 93 for a fiver!! Swings and roundabouts !

I bought my Mexican Purple Rain picture disc album for about £50.

I sold a copy of Black Sweat purple vinyl for £150.

I also sold a 12inch of Days Of Wild for £50

Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
