Prince dines with Bobby Z but will he play with Revolution on Sunday?

Bobby Z /Star Tribune photo by Tom Wallace

It was Valentine’s Day and they had the balcony at the Dakota all to themselves during the Steeles performance.

The three couples were Mr. and Mrs. Larry Graham, Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Z and Prince and his girlfriend.

Inquiring minds want to know if Bobby Z discussed the possibility of Prince showing up Sunday night at First Avenue for a reunion of the "Purple Rain"-era Revolution (a benefit for the American Heart Association).

Said Z: "It was just old friends having dinner."

He indicated that the Revolution reunion -- featuring Wendy & Lisa, Brownmark, Dr. Fink, Z, Dez Dickerson and Eric Leeds -- is pressing on with the assumption that Prince will not be participating. But organizer Z, who suffered a near-fatal heart attack in February 2011, is leaving the door open for Prince to show up.

Look for a video interview with Z on this website later today and a longer discussion of Prince & the Revolution with Wendy & Lisa, Z and Questlove of the Roots in Sunday’s Star Tribune.

I wish he would that would be AWESOME!! But you know Prince wont do it. He will never do anything that his fans would like. Its too normal. He always has to do whatever will push us away as a challenge to see how many of us stay fans. Just backwards

I hope he turns up in the crowd in the first song, on the shoulders of a grown up, then leaves halfway through the song twiddling a rose as he goes. Old School.

if he doesn't perform with them I think he will show up

He should come with Sheila E on 1 arm and Andy on the other,

Sheila might get on stage with them, and then that might inspired Prince to follow

Hmm,..maybe there is hope with these meetings..not just for the reunion for the night of the event but to get the others involved in remasters input etc. etc. It appears the scae Bobby went through may have shook Prince to opening himself and such.

Heres hoping for a great reunion regardless.

It's cool that he shows love and respect for BobbyZ, since Bobby's incident. He did make it clear at MSG in NYC, during the W2A tour how much respect he had for Bobby.

I guess that would be a real surprise for those who attend the renunion this weekend, if Prince decided to join in on stage. But if not, he could always do a show of his own, the next night, at a small venue, with BobbyZ on drums, while some fans are still in town that night.

That would taken as him trying 2 show up his old group by some folks.

So true. In other words, it's their show, so let the light shine on them. Yes, I hear you. You have a point. That's why I mentioned, if possible, while Revolution fans are in town, maybe he could, (not saying he should or he has to) do a separate show on his own, the next night, but then again that would be a Monday, and I'm sure some fans who will be in town that weekend, may have to be back at work for Monday. Can't hurt for trying.lol

But....at least one thing is good, is that he showed respect to BobbyZ this week by acknowledging his presence in Minne, and taking the time to sit down and have dinner with him. So that was a good thing, even if he doesn't take part in the Revolution's show this weekend or attend it.

3 things to say:

1] Bobby looks great - a hint of Tom Jones about him these days!

2] P should just show up to perform at the close with Purple Rain

3] I know this may sound really offensive but the thought of LG being anywhere near this just makes me cringe. I really dig as a musician, he's funky as hell but the Revolution was about freedom of expression and NOT self censorship. LG & his wife are at the polar opposite of what the Revolution stood for. I just pray that they do not influence/control P in any negative way on what could be a potentially historic night.

Clearly there's an olive branch being held out here, yes it's their show but i can't think of one reason why he wouldn't want to stop by and say Hi!... for this good cause.

Come on man it's your band, and that's your people calling!.... life's to short... thumbs up!

I don't think 'growing beyond' that has anything to do with it, if that's the case why sit to dinner with him and his wife...

or have Wendy Sheila Jerome & Morris Lisa perform on stage.

It's a 1 night thing celebrating Bobby Z's life and recovery, how do you grow beyond that?

It's going to be a great night whether he comes or not, but if Prince comes on stage at the end for "Purple Rain," that alone would put this concert in the legendary category. I just hope the weather forecast (clear skies through Sunday) is accurate, since some of us are flying in for the event and this is probably a one-time opportunity.

The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.
