And yes the hits can be tiresome for the hardcore fans who've been to mulitple shows, but if he does play more obsure songs he will not draw in the audience numbers.

Madonna ALWAYS plays her latest music and still fills stadiums.

But I guess Prince's audience isn't as sophisticated as Madonna's.

Tori Amos is doing a tour right now and it's all new music + obscure tracks + very few "hits". Sure, she isn't filling stadiums but SO WHAT?

and with that ..let the church say amen ...AMEN

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

and prince is the same age as madonna ..and that says what?

he didn't say anything about sex in his post, he discussed music and that's prince's passion. but it doesn't surprise me with a lot of people on this site, when the facts are presented people wanna act like a deer caught in headlights and can't articulate themselves enough 2 see what's in front of them.

That's funny. I bring up two examples,a nd you only bother to attack one of them, and then only with completely irrelevant nonsense. Translation: I'm right, and you just can't bring yourself to admit that.

I don't think comparing prince and madge as sluts will get us far, but as musicians, I don't think there is a contest.

It's interesting to hear that Prince listens to 24-bit files of their own music.

"Digital music" doesn't always mean MP3 . . . and Prince himself dabbled with uncompressed music when he offered all 3 of the LotusFlow3r discs for download as WAVS (not 24-bit, but CD-quality 16-bit). If Prince were to bypass all traditional outlets for distributing music, he could offer a streaming Cloud player app or even offer his new music via Netflix. There are plenty of ways to get the music out; there just has to be a market for it.

Not a very insightful interview -- in fact, I think the questions were somewhat amateurish. I cringed when I read the word "cats" in one of the first questions, as if the interviewer was himself trying to sound cool.

Are you serious? Its like your trying to compare apples with oranges.

Madonna ALWAYS plays her latest music and still fills stadiums.

Yes she does, and shes also very commericalised and you know she is. Her latest music is played everywhere and shes still topping the charts, of course shes gonna play her latest stuff. Madonna's popularity has been consistent throughout the decades from clever marketing and business moves by Madonna herself.

Tori Amos is doing a tour right now and it's all new music + obscure tracks + very few "hits". Sure, she isn't filling stadiums but SO WHAT?

As I said with my previous post, theres a lot of casual fans and new fans out there that do fill up the venues and they wanna hear the hits, he has to go where the bigger market is and cannot really just cater for a small percentage of hardcore fans constantly because it doesn't always work with the main audience. I can see why he plays the hits. I think the only way to deal with the group of hardcore fans for now is to do Aftershows.

I'm sure Amos does some great gigs and has a good number of followers as fans, but she doesn't fill out stadium because she can't, Prince does because he can! lol The last Prince concert I went to it had about 55,000 people there. She is not really on the same level as Prince is she now.

Before the advent of recorded music? What is he planning to do, go door to door like Christmas carollers every time someone wants to hear a song?

falloff I know....I read that like 3 times just trying to figure out wtf he could mean. Only thing I can come up with is live shows...and I supposed quite possibly selling sheet music at the shows so people can go home and recreate it! LOL!

Yeah, I noticed that too, especially since I took a course in music history at university. Even piano rolls were actually "recorded" music, because someone played the song on a special piano that punched the dots onto the rolls, so that the playing was "recorded" onto the roll, to be reproduced and later played on pianolas/player pianos.

There were troubadours and minnesingers - they were basically touring musicians, but since there was no recorded music, they would do the same songs or each others songs ("covers") all the time. I don't think Prince wants to train a troup of musicians to tour around playing his songs.

The only thing that makes sense is live music - not only touring (or carolling! lol) but maybe something like he did at 3121 in Vegas, a standard place where he and associated/kindred artists can play - makes more sense as he get older. He can play new music in a place like that, whereas tours are heavier on the established hits. Also, an old-fashioned club scene - lots of clubs w/ live music close together in certain parts of town. Think of the kind of clubs portrayed in "The Cotton Club" or even "Ray." Music gets "distributed" in networks like that because musicians learn others' songs, young musicians know where to go to "apprentice" and carry on a certain style. It's like the jazz era. That would be exciting. Except of course if you live in the middle of nowhere.

I don't think he really meant "recorded" music . . . but if he did, then WTF?! lol

I can't be 100% sure, but I think he was referring to digital music and the Internet/Piracy issues that follow. Back when recordings were analog, they were not as easily pirated.
