^^^ Here's another, "pre-recording era distribution method" but he'd have to learn how to do it

[It stated at the top copyright reproduction prohibited - no no no! Snip - luv4u]

Oh come on, you know what I mean by never. lol

falloff @ the group brainstorm.

This is why I do love to visit the org biggrin

Live shows aside, I'm not sure what these "endless" options are for sharing music without recording it...

...that said, can't wait to see what they are! wink

Love the smiley, love the LOL, love his reply to the "Reasonably Intelligent Interviewer" (what a way to introduce yourself to an international celebrity, truly!!) - hate the caps lock. It's not the fastest way to type (all small caps would be just as easy if capitalisation was really so time-consuming); to me it's just an indication of how little regard he had for the interview to not even bother taking caps lock off.

I did notice though that in a recent facebook post, Andy typed in all caps - if that's not unusual for her, perhaps she was typing for him...or maybe he was posting on her facebook account...or maybe they just both like to shout at people...who knows.

In any case, looking forward to hearing whatever new stuff he's working on - be it via CD, live show, carollers, etc...

(Thankfully I know some musicians, so I'm all set, should it come out as sheet music!! Should make for one heck of an interesting Peach N Black podcast though wink)

Those threads don't interest me either, but my simple solution is to not enter them. There are obviously people who want to discuss such things, so just let them is my way, they're not harming anyone. Whereas the whiners just set a horrible tone for what usually start as interesting topics IMO.

Honestly, I'd just prefer more indept discussions of the music, which is why I think we should have two sections for the "Music" and the "More".

Prince on his dogged tour.

Ben RaynerPop Music Critic

Prince Rogers Nelson isn’t known for being terribly generous with his time to the press, so when the opportunity came up to do an email interview with the man in advance of his Air Canada Centre dates this coming Friday and Saturday we were a little skeptical that we’d ever hear anything back.

As it turns out, though, Prince is as punctual as he is prolific. And not without a sense of humour, either. I was worried he’d turn up his nose at my lame questions and hit delete, so I prefaced them with a note apologizing for the fact that I’m a terrible interviewer and hoping that he would at least find them “reasonably intelligent.” The answers came back addressed to the “Reasonably Intelligent Interviewer.” Sharing a giggle with Prince? Who knew it was possible.

The exchange that follows is unedited (well, except for all the questions he ignored), with the Purple One’s responses preserved in their original, Prince-ly glory.

The “Welcome 2 Canada” leg of your current, rather marathon tour is pretty extensive, touching down in spots such as London and Saskatoon and Halifax that an artist of your stature might not normally be expected to hit. How long has it been since you dug in and hit this many ports of call in the Great White North? Did anything in particular motivate this spirit of diligent inclusivity?

AS U KNOW THE HEAD OF LIVE NATION, MIKE RAPINO, IS ORIGINALLY FROM THUNDER BAY, CANADA. WE ALWAYS PROMISED 2 COME 2 HIS HOMETOWN 2 DO SOMETHING HISTORIC. THIS BAND IS A WELL-OILED MACHINE NOW. IT’S A PERFECT MIX OF MUSICIANS 2 WRECK HOUSE IN ALL OF CANADA.

I’ve read in a couple of places that you and the band rehearsed something like 300 songs for this tour. Is that media hyperbole or are you cats really that pathological when it comes to preparedness?

30 YEARS IN THE BUSINESS GIVES U A LOT 2 WORK WITH. WE R VERY DISCIPLINED. THIS IS THE MOUNTAIN TOP. THERE IS NOTHING “PATHOLOGICAL” ABOUT IT. DOING A RESIDENCY IN ANY PARTICULAR CITY REQUIRES A LARGE REPERTOIRE TO ENSURE REPEAT BUSINESS. MOST OF THE AUDIENCE HAVE BEEN 2 MULTIPLE SHOWS IN THEIR LIFETIME. IT IS TRULY A BLESSING.

Speaking of, what can we expect from the set list on these dates? And how do you decide what goes in or out of the mix on a nightly basis when you’re working with a catalogue that deep?

EACH AUDIENCE IS DIFFERENT. WHAT THEY RESPOND 2 MOST FAVORABLY USUALLY DICTATES THE FLOW OF THE CONCERT AND THE CHOICE OF THE MATERIAL. ALSO THE SOUND QUALITY AND THE ENERGY OF THE BAND. U CAN ALWAYS TELL WHEN THE GROOVE IS WORKING OR NOT.

You stated recently that you won’t be recording — or, at least, releasing — any new material until the online distribution of music is properly regulated. Do you plan on holding yourself to that statement?

NO. I HAVE A WRITING ADDICTION. THAT SAID, IT WOULD B GREAT 2 C THE GOVERNMENT GET INVOLVED 2 INVESTIGATE THE COLLUSION AND RACKETEERING ASPECT OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY. THE WHOLE NATION WOULD BENEFIT GREATLY FROM A MORE SECURE DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM.

Considering that you were among the first recording artists of your profile to experiment and champion alternative means of distribution — including selling your music directly to fans online — this change in attitude stands as a pretty serious about-face. What, exactly, prompted you to reconsider the way you put your records out there?

THIS BREAK FROM RECORDING IS AN ATTEMPT 2 CURB THE CREATIVE CRAVING. WE’VE ALREADY HAD A RELAPSE OR 2. THIS BAND IS WAY 2 TALENTED NOT 2 B RECORDED. THEY R A BAD INFLUENCE. smile

Furthermore, if you’re prepared to reject the Internet as a vehicle for releasing records, what alternatives are there? There are, after all, rumours now circulating that the major labels are about to abandon CDs as a format altogether.

WE R VERY INTERESTED IN THE WAY NEW WORKS WERE DISTRIBUTED B4 THE ADVENT OF RECORDED MUSIC. WHEN U R IN THE MUSICAL DRIVERS SEAT, IT AFFORDS U A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE. THE OPTIONS R ENDLESS.

I love this quotation because I’m not a fan of MP3s and “compression” and their overall effect on fidelity: “I personally can’t stand digital music. You’re getting sound in bits. It affects a different place in your brain. When you play it back, you can’t feel anything. We’re analogue people, not digital.” Would you care to elaborate a bit? I’m worried that if CDs are abandoned, the lion’s share of music is now going to be available in a form that doesn’t value decent sound quality.

WE LISTEN 2 24-BIT FILES OF R CURRENT WORK. ON THE OTHER HAND WE LOVE VINYL. ONE JUST NEEDS 2 STUDY THE FACT THAT MUSIC SEEMS 2 SOUND BEST WHEN THERE IS SOME “REVOLUTION” INVOLVED.

As someone whose career is shackled to the troubled newspaper industry, I must ask: what was behind your decision to distribute a couple of your recent records as giveaways affixed to European dailies?

SO MUCH 4 REASONABLE INTELLIGENCE. LOL!! (KIDDING)

Cool interview. I like the personal style of it and the relaxed attitude.

Not a lot of info tho'. Primarily meant to sell tickets to his show, but still a different tone than last year.

I'm not going into all this nonsense about what people THINK he meant with "revolution" nor into all the personal issues some people are displaying on this thread.

I know for a fact that Prince and the Revolution need to sit together again, to come to new agreements on their legal positions.

And I wish them all well, hoping that any musical gathering would bring them closer together.

There is just one thing that he said that I found questionable:

The writing addiction is a soothing comment, ensuring us all that - of course - he would not stop making music. He may have gone into "writing rehab" but we all know how long that would probably take lol.

Different thing is going into "release rehab". I am puzzled by his comment about the govenment getting involved. I would totally support an indepth investigation into the workings of the music industry that would actually also change the way the industry operates. But then P says that "the whole nation would benefit greatly from a more secure distribution system".

It's not just that this seems at odds with his political and religious beliefs. It seems more that what he is suggesting is that the government also take control of the internet. I am not sure tho', because it's too short and cryptic, but would it really be "great" if they got involved?

For one, more government control is very hard for a number of reasons. Technologically, legally and financially. It is because of those reasons that governments worldwide prefer "self regulation" of the indutry and the internet, and have chosen to do not much more than than (obediently) protect copyright owners with the legislation they require. Often to the detriment of the consumer's rights.

I always hoped Prince on the internet would keep his head and chin up "in the face of all adversity" and find a decent way to succesfully release as much music as he can to all those people who would appreciate it. It seems he has really given up on it.

I wouldn't spend too much time dissecting Prince's views on policy questions. If Prince ran the world, most likely it would be structured as a giant harem, with all the women doing his sexual bidding and the men providing him with incense and candles as well as an endless supply of Captain Crunch.

I would never have predicted, however, that Prince might be in favor of more government regulation in the music industry. Too bad he can't go back in time and testify in favor of the PMRC as to why Purple Rain should have been slapped with a warning sticker.

I think we underestimate Prince's intelligence, experience and principal attitude in these matters and that we let his sometimes kooky views and actions, clutter our perspective on where he is really standing. Prince has an authoritarian personality, certainly when it is about music he is the author of. We have ample evidence of that (lawsuits, c&d letters, websheriff, associated artists).

In that perspective, it makes sense that he would call on government (call the law) to solve the problems with the internet and copyrights, especially if he has given up himself on it. But it also seems to go against his p&r and moreover his desire to always exclusively decide for himself how his music is handled.

He seems to be very much against the compulsory license scheme for musical covers for example, because he can't excercise any control over the way his songs are covered and how much he makes of it. But that is exactly what he can expect to get, if government would take more control. It would chose the most efficient and effective way that copyrightowners at least will be getting paid for downloads. But that would not be as much as Prince would want, nor could he do anything about it then if he doesn't like it.

If I'm reading his words right therefore, he is basically asking the government to erode his copyrights further to just a set of basic rights to compensation for the use of his work and see it less and less as a set of exclusive rights to control his own work the way he sees fit.

And that I really doubt is his intention. So I'm probably not reading/understanding his words right.

V10LETBLUES

My tin foil hat is strapped on and it is working wonderfully! The voices in my head are coming in loud and clear. They are telling me we will see a new Prince project with "the old gang". wink wink

I don't want to spread false rumors or bring people hopes up unnecessarily, so I ran diagnostic tests on my hat, tuned it and tuned it until the foil was tearing apart,... so below without any further ado...

Behold! The FACTS.

1. Prince visits Wendy & Lisa in their tree house.

2. Andy Allo posts on her Facebook page that she has been going through "The Vault" and releases a snip of an old song titled "We Can Love" containing the lyrics:

I can tell you things to get you all excited, things you never heard.

and lastly! From Prince Himself!

"WE LISTEN 2 24-BIT FILES OF R CURRENT WORK. ON THE OTHER HAND WE LOVE VINYL. ONE JUST NEEDS 2 STUDY THE FACT THAT MUSIC SEEMS 2 SOUND BEST WHEN THERE IS SOME “REVOLUTION” INVOLVED."

Start your fake tracklists NOW!..... before it's too late!

Damn, some people should stop whining. just saying.

It's quite nauseating reading the constant whiny, whingy posts that come out on nearly every thread. I just can't help but think WHY! Why, if the man annoys them so much, why waste time reading and writing posts on his FANsite? I know they loved him when he was in his glorious 80's pomp and that's their validation for spending all that time whining, but it's really quite sad. I liken it to not being able to let go of an ex-girlfriend! 1984 was a long time ago, time to let go and let those of us who still appreciate and love the man's music and wonderfully weird ways have some decent discussion about one of the greatest pop stars ever, without the threads decending into boring battles of prince is great vs prince is a complete and utter t**t, as most seem to. [Edited 11/20/11 15:03pm] [Edited 11/21/11 0:08am]

Well, I love nearly every single studio release. Some may be weaker than others like MPLSound, but nearly every release has at least 3 awesome songs, and several very good ones.

When it comes to his mostly weak live shows with background singers singing way too much, and

the endless hit heavy shows with weak arrangements...I will bitch and complain. He complicates this by having awesome shows every now and then, which makes the idiots that go to those shows think Prince is on top of his game.

I try to be as intelligent as possible, but usually fail at that, as the internet is full of dumb posts, so I tend to dumb down my own writing.

I tend to think there are several groups of Prince fans on here:

1. Prince is so great, I love everything he does. If the whole concert was Andy Allo playing a 90 minute version of The Wedding Feast, I would be happy. He sure did look young tonight!

2. Prince sucks so bad, I paid $500 for VIP seats, and he played Play That Funky Music for ten minutes, but only sang the first verse of Raspberry beret.

3. All of Prince's albums after Batman are horrible. He had one good song after that (Thieves In The Temple), and then he just plain sucks. But his live shows are all perfect. I have been to 3 million shows, and every one of them should be the next DVD.

4. Then there is me. One of the very few that love all of his albums for the most part, save for MPLSound, most of New Power Soul, and anything involving Tony M.... I love Lotus Flow3r, 3121, Planet Earth, most of Musicology....but his live show has been weak except for ONA in 2002, and Musicology in 2004.

Unfortunately I have only been to 2 Prince gigs, the first was the o2 arena London in 07 and I remember at the time being slightly disappointed but couldn't remember why until i bought 'Get on the clipper boat' recently (a full recording of the show), I quickly remembered why I didn't enjoy it, he whittled through the first 5 songs, all of which i loved, with just him and a guitar, IMO it didn't set a good tone for the rest of the show. Sure there were great moments but on the whole not one of the better gigs I've been to.

Then the next one was in Dublin earlier this year and he blew my mind, yes a few songs like 'empty room' or a few b-sides would have been nice but the feeling in the audience was that everyone was having a great time, most seemed like casual fans to me, talking through the slow songs much to my annoyance but the more upbeat hits were met with lots of dancing and singing, which was great.

Overall, I would rate the gig as the best I've ever been to, the 10 min super version of 'Little RedCorvette' had my non Prince fan girlfriend in tears of joy! Even she says it was one of the best she's been to and was amazed with P's musicianship. The only things I'd like to see him change from theMalahide gig are a few more obscure songs, no covers and possibly cut the number of songs down and concentrate on playing full versions of all the songs rather than half a song here and there and sampler sets.

Regarding studio albums, I think i'm in the same group as you. the only album I struggle to listen to all the way through is Rave. Everything else I can quite happily sit through the whole albums and get enjoyment from it.

I have been to 3 million shows, and every one of them should be the next DVD.

okay well the song titles i presented were in response 2 how some fans react still 2 prince being with the revolution and that time frame. every mention of the revolution people will jump on it with wagging tongues and can't get over that that time frame is gone and since then, prince can't do anything without the revolution. the simple fact that he mentions the word revolution "oh he must be getting back with them. oh damn he met with wendy and lisa something is up" etc.

hopefully now u can understand the titles now

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81
