Teen Prince Fan Blues It is HARD being a teen Prince fan nowadays! I Blast his songs on the ipod but nobody wants to jam with me! Dress up to school as purple reign era prince and get "WTF" looks from half the kids! I am however spreading him around...as least 30 kids know who Prince is now and some are big fans!
Any other teens out there onthe org feeling me? got any stories? see ya The folks from Brooklyn play da bass pretty good but the ones from Minneappolis play it like they OUGHTA SHOULD!

The worst part for me (I'm 18) is being on the org and saying "I think he's still making good music" or saying I like his 90s music best, and having everybody tell me how stupid I am, and that the reason I'm stupid is because of my age, and whenever I'm older I'll think exactely like whoever it is calling me stupid..
I don't know anybody who likes Prince, though. Most of my family doesn't like him either.. That doesn't really bother me much, though..

Was it Halloween? 'Cause if it was just a regular day, I'd probably go too.

It's nice that you like him, but uh.... I'm a high school teacher, and if you passed my classroom dressed like that, I'D probably give you the WTF look, too. I WAS in high school during the "Purple RAIN" era. We didn't dress like that.

I mean if you came to my school dressed as prince and it wasn't halloween, I wouldn't be surprised if you got a couple . However, Prince was brought up in my media studies class today. The topic was metaphors used in music and media back in the day, opposed to the right up in yo face dirty talk we get in todays music. A kid raised there hand and mentioned Prince, the teacher then talked about little red corvette and the double meaning behind the lyrics. He didnt go into specifics though
I think its cool being a teen Prince fan, i wear my W2A tour shirt every once in awhile. I used to get shit for it when i was a freshman. Im a senior now and quite a few people actually like him because of his guitar playing and performances they've seen. I always get texts from people i know if they hear a Prince song on the radio So its actually not bad at all! [Edited 9/22/11 19:58pm]

I hope you do not teach your pupils to put random words in capital letters and leave out question marks after a question?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yeah, I hate so much that all my friends don't like his music or even try to listen to him. They just push him off because they don't like the way he dresses and stuff like that. They are missing out on real music because they are too stubborn to give him a try... Purple Music is my drug and I'm jonesin!!!!!

The capital letters were not random. They were for emphasis: - "I'D" and "WAS" would have been stressed if I was speaking. - RAIN was because the OP spelled it "r-e-i-g-n".
And what question? That was an expression. "Do you" means, "Do what you feel is cool"; I wasn't asking "Do you (whatever)?"
Don't worry about my students. They learn proper writing skills from me, including the difference between formal writing and writing on the internet. (23 years and counting...) I also teach them not to put others down to make themselves seem smarter.

Please don't worry....people looked strange at me too when I told them in 1984 that I was a Prince fan (was 16 then)....

Really? At my high school, there were a lot of Prince fans... I wasn't one of them though.

Yeah, in my high school also some Prince fans, but lot of people were into more "normal" looking and sounding artists (like Phil Collins), or alternative stuff (Cure etc.) or even Metal (Iron Maiden)....Lot of people were confused I guess by Prince's androgynous image...Even Michel Jackson looked more common to them.

I was doing no such thing. I'm happy with how smart (or not) I am. I was merely pointing out what I thought were random mistakes which were written by a high school teacher. And I have never heard of the expression that you pointed out.
No harm done. | |

Don't sweat it too much - some of us olds like his current stuff, too.
And I must say - I was surprised to hear you're 18. You're a good writer. (I write for a living - so you may take that as a professional assessment. ) We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

jazzz said: Please don't worry....people looked strange at me too when I told them in 1984 that I was a Prince fan (was 16 then).... Indeedy...people used to give me a wide berth in my teenage years if I said I was a Prince fan. Back then it was because he was considered feminine or gay....now it probably just because he's shit or everyone thinks he's dead or still a symbol because that the last time he popped up on the world stage except for his most-popular-hits tour in 2007

I became a fan around 19 years old in 1992/3 just after I graduated HS...and believe you me I got the same kind of reactions. I still do even. Just embrace it and be glad you don't go with the flow.
"not a fan" yeah...ok | |

I became a fan in 2008 when I was 17. I honestly didn't get much reactions from my peers as I suppose contemporarily most young people don't know much about Prince.

Hey ...soon enough you will be known as the Prince guy..and anytime somebody sees Prince or think about him they will think of you! Believe me I started becoming a fan in 1992 at 11 years old and it wasnt until 1998 where people in high school started appreciating Prince alot more for some reason.

I no!
I live in Poland (county in Central Europe), Prince has been here on Heineken Festival in July, 2011. But, ANY OF MY FRIENDS DIDN'T KNOW PRINCE, until i told 'em about him. Everytime i change Prince photo on my phone screen, my friends, which aren't my bestfriends, are like 'wtf? who's that person?". I don't tell 'em about P., just because they won't understand his personality. When I say something about P. they say "Prince? Prince of what? Prince Charles?". What a shame.
I just cant underastand the fact, that someone could know Madonna and Michael Jackson and doesn't know Prince. I know a lot of people from my school, which say "yeah dude, I'm very into old music. I know every artist." and don't know who the hell Prince is.
I'm in the class with German on high level. At the end of last school year, we had to make a presentation (in German ofc) on a random topic. I made it about Prince. When I told my German teacher about who I'm gonna make a presentation, she was like "what? who the hell is he?". Ok, i could understand her small knowledge if she would born in 90's and, but she born in 70's and she grow up with 80's music! So evil girl, if one of us has a date,

btw, I gather "do you" is American for "be yourself".
So really, you were just doing you.

When I Was in high school (Dutch version of it) most of the boys were into Queen and Dire Straits which was old even then. (I grew up in the 1980s). Some of em liked Prince too, but when I told em I liked James Brown they didn't get it. So what? That's when I learned to go my own way. If everybody likes Paradise by the Dashboard Light, that doesn't mean I have to like it. I love it when young people discover Prince's music. And he loves it too. Next step, James Brown and Sly Stone. Enjoy!
