Thank you. I don't seriously worry or care about being criticized, though. I was just replying to the OP about the worst part of being a Prince fan.. It's really the worst part of being young in general. I can't tell you how many times I've heard "When You're my age".. then they'll tell me how I'll think and act just like they do when I'm older.

The funny thing is, the person who originally made the comment and I talked it out in private, and we're cool. So I'm not sure what "argument"... Notice how neither one of us addressed it anymore.

I'm a hadcore teen prince fan. I've been listing to him since the age of 10, and read 8 bios on him to. If anyone was to ask me who's the best musican on earth, I would say prince cause he produces his own albums, plays his on insturment and manges everything by himself.

I love 60s,70s and 80s music, i don't care what others think. If that music makes me happy, no one can stop me loving that music!

Being a Prince fan, together with not fitting the macho type, made me gay for several of my school colleagues. I'm deeply thankful to them, since their mediocrity contributed to developing my individuality back then.

Apart from sexuallity, I think a Prince teen fan, if he/she is strong enough to continue being so despite all the shit surrounding, can develop a strong and different personality, due, at least in part, to liking a truly original and brilliant musician who speaks to the individual, not to the masses.

Same with Bowie, for example. Of course, you're also gay if you like Bowie. Actually, with Bowie it is even stronger than with Prince: Bowie talks to the individual, more, to the alien, to those who don't fit.

I'm glad to look back now, as I'm more than 30, and remember how some musicians have helped me through the years, especially in those difficult teen years. And they continue to do so now.

I find it totally unbelievable when anyone young says they don't know who Prince is. Considering how many times his music has been sampled by other artists and how much he is referenced to by other artists. The young people today are watching BET Awards shows and Prince was prominently featured on 2 of them in recent history(The Chaka Khan tribute and Prince's tribute). That's the equivalent of saying you don't know who Madonna or Michael Jackson is. What kind of music do these childrens parents listen to at home? Britney, Rihanna and Justin Beiber. I can understand them not liking Prince but claiming to have no knowledge of him entirely is suspect.

First of all, I LOVE your username, priceless! I would hang out with you just for that alone if we lived in the same area I don't know what Purple Rain clothes you are wearing, but I was wearing MJ inspired clothing with a twist to it for many years, so I empathize with you in that respect. Are you wearing something that would look Bohemian or Victorian that could pass as Purple Rain era?

I cringe too if people don't know who Prince is or don't appreciate him as a musician. I have a Prince shirt and people think it's MJ, I just go it's MJ's rival!

I felt like you back in high school if people didn't always appreciate Janet and were into more sugary pop artists or preferred rock. People made MJ jokes, but not if he had music out, it was fairweathered though I was fortunate to know fans outside of school in real life. Anyways, embrace your individuality and go on with your bad self cause you only live once...it's cute to be known for being a fan of someone, but you want people to remember you for the good qualities you have too aside from that and not just a label, so be yourself as well and use Prince as well as other style icons to inspire your look, cause it sounds like you definitely love fashion.

I cringe too if parents don't know Prince, but know MJ and Madonna, cause the 3 are the first artists I ever knew as a 2 or 3 year old, and I'm sure when I couldn't remember, cause mom says I was dancing around at 1-ish and had white gloves

Parliament-Funkadelic has been sampled nearly as much as Prince (if not more) and had a huge influence on all sorts of artists, including Prince himself. But I wouldn't be surprised if a majority of today's teenagers have no idea who George Clinton is. Same goes for James Brown. Someone who is 13 today wouldn't even have been born when Crystal Ball came out, let alone when Prince was at his prime. Most musicians get forgotten by the general public over time, except for cultural icons like the Beatles and Elvis. Serious music fans will always know who Prince is but I wouldn't expect everyone else to remember him forever.

It's quite easy to explain actually. Parliament is way more accepted in the so called hetero community. You don't have to explain why you love Parliament. Somebody was talking Bowie too earlier. But even he is more accepted in the "hetero" community. Bowie didn't combine his androgyne persona with overly sexual attitude and lyrics.

There's many negative things to say towards prince if you're an insecure "macho" man. Stuff like sellout(use of gimmicks, and making pop songs), gay (persona, makeup)...

Based on your choice of words, that's a matter of opinion, not fact.

If you meant to say that many teens would not openly admit to loving or even knowing Prince because of his persona, that's possible.

Yes, one's first ever post on the org can be quite nerve-racking. It's OK - there's plenty of 90s threads on here. It seems some people are passionate about a certain time period or whether you're a "new" or "long time" fan - just ignore.

I can totally relate and this is exactly what i was talking about on my other thread but not many people understood (probably because they are older) and said that I was making stuff up.

yeah I'm around teens all the time (im 18 and a college girl) Nobody exept one guy who was a year older than me even knew who he was. I used to be like "what you never even heard of him?!" but now i just blame it on their ignorance and I just enjoy having a more musically diverse mind. I have his face as a screensaver (he looks super young in that pic) and people who look over at my screen in class are all puzzled. I just say "This is Prince my boyfriend and he's a model and plays a little guitar too" they're like "wow he looks cute. Does he have a facebook?" If only they knew. lol
