Is The Parade Album Overrated? I was talking to an orger about the Parade album being overrated, and we both agreed that it was overrated. While we were talking, I checked the album out, and I was suprised at how many songs I liked on the album:"Mountains", "I Wonder U", "New Posistion", "Sometimes It Snows In April", "Kiss"(I prefer watching the video when I hear this song),"Girls & Boys"and"Anotherloverholenyohead".
So what? I like 7 out of 12. It's still overrated. Maybe tracks like "Christopher Tracey's Parade", "Under The Cherry Moon", "Do U Lie" and "Venus De Milo" slow down the tempo or something, because those songs would've been better left off.
I just don't understand why this album gets more love than "Around The World In A Day" or "Diamonds and Pearls". They're both better than Parade. But maybe it's a taste matter. I prefer to listen to The Black Album instead of Parade. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to bash the album...it's just over hyped.

WRONG!!!!
If anything Parade is underrated ... it's a pure work of art. No one else would have had the talent, or the balls, to have created that album. Genius!

It's not overrated, but Around The World In A Day is way better. Also, Diamonds And Pearls is nowhere near the level of Parade.

How is it underrated? The critics gave it an average of 4 stars.

You'd rather listen to The Black Album? Are you all fucked up on crack or something? As much as I love ATWIAD, it's flawed, and has some moments that are seriously cheesy. Parade is pretty much perfect. If it were the length of SOTT it'd be Prince's best album. Also, Sometimes It Snows was one of the first Prince songs that really blew my mind. Not overrated at all. It's one of his masterpieces.

Around The World In A Day has no cheesy moments. And no, I'm not on crack. Like I said, It's proabaly a matter of taste. So "Do U Lie" is a perfect song?

Love Parade it's probably one of my favs. Don't think it's overrated at all. It doesn't sound like anything he's done b4 or after.

It sounds like a French inspired version of Around The World In A Day. [Edited 8/8/11 15:49pm]

You're kidding right?
Diamond And Pearls is an AWFUL album, besides a few songs.
Around The World In A Day is nice, but it's way too inconsistent to be a masterpiece like Parade is.
Parade is brilliant. If it was a women, I'd sleep with it.
If it was a male, I'd sleep with it. And I'm straight.

I'm dead serious. Maybe I need to check it out a little more. Because "Kiss" can get annoying, tracks like "Venus De Milo", "Under The Cherry Moon", "Christopher Tracey's Parade" and "Do U Lie" kill my mood. I like "New Position" and "I Wonder U".
Hey, even Prince said the only song on the album that interested him was "Kiss".

Well Prince also admires burqas and hates the Internet, so every one of his opinions are null and void.

I used to have that gif! Only without the crappy text on the bottom - his facial expression says all that without needing to state the obvious anyway.
As far as the actual topic goes...Tyler, don't ask dumb questions. If anything Parade is underrated. It's way better than the Purple Rain disc imo. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

the masterpiece Parade, is a 10/10 experience,
those brilliant singles, 12 inch extended versions,
and excellent b-sides Love Or Money, Alexa De Paris....
and the album.... I enjoy every note on this piece of music, it is so "trippy"
Brilliant LP...... makes this thread creator looking dumb IMO.... Prince 4Ever.

Parade is dope. I don't personally understand "Life Can Be So Nice" Too out there for me, but the rest of the album should be called a masterpiece.
Of course, Around The World In A Day, has moments, arguably better than... blah, blah, blah, blah.

It is not over rated, most of the songs on it are classics, and the lesser tracks are more passable rather than poor. It hardly has any of the inconsistencies or filler that his post Lovesexy output has. The best thing about Parade is its unique sound and pure catchiness. Parade is a cohesive whole, not a patchy set of killer and filler like his later albums were (Post 1988 ones). Its in the Top 5 of Prince albums and only had the misfortune of preceding Sign o the Times and its earlier incarnations. The music on Parade is a natural progression from everything before it, and is only really eclipsed by Sign. Even the out takes from Parade are highlights, an Honest Man, Power Fantastic etc. If Prince was making albums as brilliant as Parade today, the world would be a happier place.
Song ratings
Christopher Tracy's Parade 9/10 New Position 9/10 I Wonder U 8/10 Under the Cherry Moon 10/10 (Very underrated, beautiful ballad) Girls and Boys 9/10 Life can be so nice 9/10 Venus De Milo 6/10 (Only Average, but pleasant enough) Mountains 10++++++/10 (Wow this was astounding, words could not describe how brilliant this track is) Do U lie 8/10 Kiss 10/10 (The fact it was #1 and had been played to death is testament to how brilliant it is Another lover ..... 9/10 (Another very god mid tempo pop song) Sometimes it snows in April 10/10 (A beautiful tender ballad, and done well)
Total 107/120 = 89% A Definitely not overrated Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I'd say the throwaways are "Christopher's Tracy's Parade" (just not a great arrangement, but good idea), Life Can be So Nice (again not a great arrangement, but good idea), Do You Lie (just not a remarkable song), and believe it or not, I get bored with "AnotherLoverHoleInYourHead" and "Sometimes It Snows in April" (although I like recent arrangements of both of those live).
That leaves all the other tunes which I think are great.
Black Album has absolutely no weak tracks to my ears. I learned so much about creative arrangements from that album! My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Really? Temptation doesn't get really cheesy? I love it, but come on. The Ladder is pretty hokey as well. Do U Lie is a great song.

It is absolutely warranted, in this case. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Listen here boi Im going to tell you something..and I DO get paid for counselin':
Parade is TIMELESS
the music could be from the 40's or the future..it's that avant garde but still with one foot in the funky
do you not understand that?
ATWIAD was simply a retread of Purple Rain rhythms and motifs...Parade was the Rev all nestled in a groove of ...promise.
Overrated? Please...just dont. Yes the music seems so simple and effortless. And thats the brilliance of it...thats what got D'Angelo's nose open...what got 2uestloves dick hard...what threw people way off because they either werent ready, werent allowed to know, or dont show, in the Uptown hood. It wasnt embraced like it is now but in retrospect it aged the best of anything. Like a fine wine or even a good bottle of ripple or Cisqo in a paper bag...gauche yes but it hits you in your gut. Now you can poo poo on it or others can be all foo foo in describing it...but its uncut and a Fellini 8 1/2 on wax.
Nuff' said?

Apparantly Parade is the album D'Angelo listened to while creating Voodoo.
