What's with the term "bait"?

The intentional posting of inflammatory content to a public Internet discussion group, such as a forum, newsgroup or mailing list, with the intent of provoking an angry response (a "flame") or argument over a topic the poster often has no real interest in.

I don't think Parade is overrated! Parade is exceptional, and it would be even if it was not for "Under The Cherry Moon" (Even as that film does not add a lot of positive light to the "Era/movement"...lol...The story structure does with Christopher Tracy and all, but the movie is not well you know...lol) Nevertheless I love Parade because it was around the time Prince was in this FANTASTIC PEAK. He created so many wonderful songs around this era with so many weird and strange elements. Songs Like "Power Fantastic/ There's Others Here With Us". I mean he was on other levels around the Parade era - Lovesexy. He still has brought much creativity during or before this period, but I really think Parade has to be given the credit it deserves. "ATWIAD" is just as powerfully great; and exceptional but to say it's better is a weak assessment. Different strokes for different folks I guess, but I doubt it is overrated. It gets a lot love, because of the classics and the style...It is just genius. On a more serious note, I think that it opens up "ATWIAD" in that; a lot Parade reflections are seen in "ATWIAD"..I am going on a tangent..but I hope you get what I mean...Haha

Yeah I think the elements of psychedelia in ATWIAD definitely affected the work of Parade for real. That's why there's such a strong element of it on Parade and of course his own brand of funk. nod I'm still amazed at "Sometimes It Snows in April". Probably one of his greatest moments as far as mid-tempo pop-rock songs of his are concerned.

Yes! That is what i am saying. Yes "Sometimes It Snows In April" is a track that defines so much. He really broke out into a level that is hardly reached. I appreciate Parade for this reason and so much! smile Thank you for your insight! What you said is true! smile cool

The time has come to post THIS list again,

just to show how I see this:

Parade is ranked among the classic Prince records:

My top 38 Prince albums,

from best album to worst,

rates out of "10":

01. Purple Rain (10) Masterpiece!
02. Sign "O" The Times (10) Masterpiece!
03. 1999 (10) Masterpiece!
04. Lovesexy (10) Masterpiece!
05. Parade (10) Masterpiece!
06. Around The World In A Day (10) Masterpiece!
07. The Gold Experience (10) Masterpiece!
08. Dirty Mind (10) Masterpiece!
09. Controversy (9)
10. Diamonds & Pearls (9)
11. Love Symbol Album (9)
12. Come (9)
13. Black Album (9)
14. The Rainbow Children (9)
15. Graffiti Bridge (8)
16. Prince (8)
17. For You (8)
18. Batman (8)
19. Crystal Ball (8)
20. Emancipation (8)
21. LotusFlower / MPLSound (8)
22. 20Ten (8)

23. Musicology (7)
24. Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic (7)

32. Planet Earth (5)
33. Newpower Soul (4)
34. One Nite Alone... Piano (3)
35. N.E.W.S. (2)
36. One Nite Alone... Live (2)
37. Indigo Nights (2)
38. Kamasutra (0)

come on now, all you motherf*cking "newbies", confused

..... tell me how low you rank this classic masterpiece,

the fine art that is.... "Parade".

wink

All right Dance, here are my discrepancies with your list:

1. TRC should NOT be higher than Graffiti Bridge. I'm sorry. If anything, GB should easily be in his top 10 album list and also ahead of Diamonds & Pearls and Love Symbol.

2. Gold, as cool as it is, is not a "10" masterpiece. It was certainly the best of the 90s, but not a straight 10. Maybe if he added Days of Wild and Acknowledge Me, took the cowbell off of and brought the guitar further up to the front on Endorphinmachine, took We March and Shy off, and had the full 7+ minute version of Billy Jack Bitch, I'd be close to agreeing with you. Real close.

3. 20Ten higher than 3121, or even Musicology?? Not in this lifetime.

4. Controversy goes ahead of Lovesexy, too. Easily.

There might be more, but these are the ones that instantly stuck out to me. lol

I gave Parade a listen last night...And "New Position", "I Wonder U" and "Mountains" were the only tracks that made me say "oh shit!".

"Kiss" kinda bored me.

"Sometimes It Snows In April" had it moments.

"Do U Lie"...

"Anotherloverholenyohead" was cool

"Under The Cherry Moon", "Venus De Milo" and "Christopher Tracey's Parade" were 50/50

"Girls & Boys" actually made me Salsa Dance.

"Life Can Be So Nice", I kinda liked it.

I'll give the album 3 1/2 stars.

You like what you like, don't worry about it. It's cool.

I don't like "The Gold Experience" such is life.

I'm sorry, but I don't care much for either. I just can't get into Parade, and, in my honest opinion anyway, the three best on The Gold Experience are P Control, Dolphin, and TMBGITW. The rest, in my opinion, is nothing but filler that he threw on to release due to contract obligations with WB.

Oh my gosh, let this thread DIE already. You think it's overrated and you'll never change, the same way I'll never change in my liking of the album. END of discussion. Go to your Halle Berry thread and continue to ruffle people's feathers over there.

Tyler I respect your opinion, but I'm with most everyone else on this topic. Parade kicks Diamonds & Pearls behind. ATWIAD is great, but Parade is better than that album as well, imo.

I'll give you credit, however, for having the nerve to "take the bullets". cowboy

Shh. We March. Now. Shy. And Billy Jack Bitch (which is pretty good, but doesn't compare to the one's I REALLY enjoy, hence why it's here) are all filler, IMO. Plus all of those stupid NPG Operator segues. Those're kind of pointless.

I don't think it's overrated at all, maybe underrated. Here in England the album got the chart position it desrved but if I'm not mistaken, it did pretty bad in the States at the time of it's release. The album has a rather European feel to it, so that may explain it doing much better over here.

Overall I'd say it's in Prince's top 5 albums. Purple Rain, Dirty Mind, SOTT, 1999 and Parade.

That doesn't make any sense. Nothing can be "new" after 3 years of experience. That "newbie" thing is something you guys made up.

I still believe this is an "Old fan" versus "Newbie fan" discussion..... razz

I you were fan there back then in the old 1980's, Prince was breathtaking innovative.

Parade:

was new, fresh, incredibly stylish, it was really capturing new ground (like so many albums from Prince did in the 80s)....

Parade is funky and very trippy at the same time. Pure psychadelica, and yet very catchy, great funk-pop, some of his best ballads, and some "wilder" tracks, like New Positions and Life Can Be So Nice.

People were really like this when this album was released in april 1986: eek

To take Graffiti Bridge or Diamonds & Pearls over Parade is insane imo......

Parade is just a masterpiece, take another listen and try to enjoy, you newbies out there.

wink

I also said Around The World In A Day(my overall favorite album) and The Black Album was

better. Diamonds and Pearls to me, is a better album. "Cream", "Insataible","Diamonds and Pearls", "Gett Off", "Money Don't Matter 2 Night", "Live 4 Love", "Willig and Able" and "Walk Don't Walk" holds up to anything on Parade. But you can't really compare that seeing how Diamonds and Pearls was made 6 years later.

This has nothing to do with newbie vs oldie. I'm not a newbie, I've been a fan for 3 years.

I'm not saying you're wrong or anything. But 3 years is not much when considering prince a musician that has been releasing music every year for more than 30 years. Prince is not something one just bumps his head to in the club, to find out that it has some banging shit. Most never understand whats so great about him, many spend years to make it grow on them, very few gets addicted immidiatly. And I don't know many that could rank Prince albums with ease after listening to him for a couple of years. Parade is without a doubt one of the albums that is hardest to get into if one does not have experience with many different genres. Often it is an album that is easier to get into after listening to MANY other artists first. Atleast imo. It was never one of my favourites either. It's now though. But I also have considered ATWIAD better before. Now I don't consider it better. I think they're both amazing. Christopher Tracys Parade and Life Can Be So Nice can sound a bit messy, but I love them now. ATWIAD is easy to listen to all the way, and is a good way to introduce him to new listeners.
