Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

Listen to this post then, Miss Dyvrdown. biggrin

and listen to the Parade album about 23 times, everything will open up for you.

It really is a matter of trying to digest this fantastic music...

It does not come easy to you like a final package:

This album - Parade - really is a lot better than recent albums.

Good luck, doing "the work". wink

and, i think most peoples' love of this album must be at least partly based on nostalgia. i know im that way with a lot of albums. graffiti bridge being a good example. nobody else seems to like it but i love it.. for nostalgic reasons.

[Edited 8/9/11 7:14am]

I'm 29, and I started to become obsessed with Prince in 2000. There is obviously no way I could've been around during the Parade era, or really most of what people consider "the good years" By this logic I'd be praising Musicology all day, when in reality the only Prince album I swear by that was released in the last decade is Planet Earth. I think the problem people have with this album is either A) youth or B) a lack of sophiscated taste. Maybe all the shitty mainstream music has made y'all's brains incapable of accepting a challenge.

I'm not included in that. I dig Frank Zappa, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, The Doors etc...

So this mainstream music of today has no impact on my taste. Being a Prince fan alone

makes this a false statement.

It's simple, some people just don't like every album. I appreciate a few songs on the album.

cant ya'll read?

I already said:

so what if im young and relatively new to prince's music? im not your average music fan, the kind that just listens to whatever autotuned hip hop and kesha perry pop crud thats on the radio. my being young doesnt make my taste in music as under-developed as most others my age.

(and for good measure, cause i doubt you read this either)

ive tried [listening to it] many times. thats how anotherlover and mountains grew on me. but the others, such as kiss, just irk me. its not that theyre boring, its that the sound of them annoys me. its not something that can grow on me. imo, mountains and anotherlover are the most "normal" (meaning, not the same weird, distinct parade sound as the others) sounding tracks on the album. thats why i can stand them. and sometimes it snows in april. venus de milo is pretty too, but thats it for me.

and you dont have to be there when an album comes out to feel nostalgia... that has to do with your personal experiences. my point was that i think a lot of people love parade for sentimental reasons.

Being a Prince fan alone

[Edited 8/9/11 11:38am]

Not nescessairly. I think we can all agree that Prince has put out his fair share of shit. The albums you listed were not the great ones. If you had listed Dirty Mind or 1999, we might've listened to you. The fact that you even consider D&P a "good" album leads me to believe that your taste is shit.

Listed them for what? Everyone knows those albums from 78-88 are classics.I know it. So me liking D&P makes me have a bad taste in music? Did you not read my OP? I said I like 7 out of 12 songs on Parade. It's a decent, but people still overhype that album.

You can believe what you want about my musical taste. It's wider than yours, trust me.

Well yeah For You does sound like the 70's, but Parade has a sound that's not as easy to catorgorize. Sorry but putting the needle down on Parade back in 86 is way different than finding it 20 years later on some digital format.

I feel invisible in here. confused I beg to differ. I didn't become a fan untill 1992 YET parade is my Favorite album.

youre not invisible to me xD i see yew eek

i think being a fan since 92 makes you an... not a new fan lol

i also think its safe to say that according to the typical "old" fan, the line between old and newbie fan is drawn somewhere around the time prince started dropping the ball. 96 or so i guess. all the old fans wanna brag about being there when he was at his peak lol and those of us who were unfortunate enough to have missed it arent as good as them.

nobody wants to be called a newbie though, even when you are. tyler and i are, and i guess ill say it once more, in conclusion... that doesnt mean we have awful taste in music.

lol You're missing the point. I have Abbey Road on vinyl but that album was released 10 years before I was born and you can't tell me that I had the same expierence as someone who played it the day it came out. Hearing Parade on my player then turning on MTV and watching the world premiere of Mountains and then seeing the Revolution on the Parade tour will with out a doubt make the album more special to some of us.

I think it does too...BUT, I wasn't there during the peak either. sad my first Prince concert was Jam of the year. I look back and WISH I was around (as a prince fan) to have seen PR in the theater, or seen a lovesexy tour or when sign o the times came out and so on. shrug No, ofcourse it doesn't mean you have awful taste in music...I mean you are Prince fans after all. biggrin

oh...and not to mention that I soooo wish I was around (old enough) to see prince around the time of Parade....cause to me...he was THE HOTTEST then. damn

WRONG!!!!

If anything Parade is underrated ... it's a pure work of art. No one else would have had the talent, or the balls, to have created that album. Genius!

How is it underrated? The critics gave it an average of 4 stars.

For real, your taste in music is different. Plus, I think that The Black Album got all the love it needed from critics. People don't talk about it because 1) It was crazy 2) It was probably limited release if I remember what I read correctly, and 3) and was crazy. PARADE is maginificent because Prince toned it down a bit and made a cohesive, album that worked together from start to finish. All the tracks work together, and the style was almost stripped down, but still over the top in its own way. If anything people don't talk about this album enough! Everyone talks about 1999 and Purple Rain, all the day long. Plus I agree, Prince was so effin' sexy in the pictures for that album. I love the picture when he was taking off his shirt. HE WAS IN SHAPE. Still is.

I think it's over rated. People are really fascinated with this album. I can never know why. It's just a matter of taste I suppose. I like Kiss, Anotherlover, Sometimes it snows.. Girls and Boys isn't too bad.. everything is well ... confused .. lol ..Sign of the Times on the other hand, now that is GENIOUS!

To my ears at least.. hehe

As much as I love ATWIAD, it's flawed, and has some moments that are seriously cheesy. Parade is pretty much perfect. If it were the length of SOTT it'd be Prince's best album.

Also, Sometimes It Snows was one of the first Prince songs that really blew my mind.

You want to have a good time? Go to Wal-Mart, buy a Red Neon Lightbub. Put the lightbub in your livingroom, put Around The World In A Day on the stereo. Sit in the livingroom and paint. Put the a/c on 60 degrees. Drink some wine while you paint, it's the most relaxing thing ever.
