I also said Around The World In A Day(my overall favorite album) and The Black Album was
better. Diamonds and Pearls to me, is a better album. "Cream", "Insataible","Diamonds and Pearls", "Gett Off", "Money Don't Matter 2 Night", "Live 4 Love", "Willig and Able" and "Walk Don't Walk" holds up to anything on Parade. But you can't really compare that seeing how Diamonds and Pearls was made 6 years later.
This has nothing to do with newbie vs oldie. I'm not a newbie, I've been a fan for 3 years.
I'm not saying you're wrong or anything. But 3 years is not much when considering prince a musician that has been releasing music every year for more than 30 years. Prince is not something one just bumps his head to in the club, to find out that it has some banging shit. Most never understand whats so great about him, many spend years to make it grow on them, very few gets addicted immidiatly. And I don't know many that could rank Prince albums with ease after listening to him for a couple of years. Parade is without a doubt one of the albums that is hardest to get into if one does not have experience with many different genres. Often it is an album that is easier to get into after listening to MANY other artists first. Atleast imo. It was never one of my favourites either. It's now though. But I also have considered ATWIAD better before. Now I don't consider it better. I think they're both amazing. Christopher Tracys Parade and Life Can Be So Nice can sound a bit messy, but I love them now. ATWIAD is easy to listen to all the way, and is a good way to introduce him to new listeners.
Yeah I know what your saying, But I have at least 6,000 Prince songs on my Laptop, and that's including his proteges and associated artists. I don't consider myself a newbie mainly because like you say "Prince is not something one just bumps his head to in the club, to find out that it has some banging shit.", I learned everything about Prince in my first 2 months of becoming a fan, so imagine how much I know now. To me a newbie is someone who doesn't quit know the basics about Prince, such as record release dates etc...Because a fan shouldn't be a fan 15 years before he or she is not called a newbie. I know just as much as a someone who's been a fan for 20 years. But I see what your saying though.
I never said I didn't appreciate Parade, I simply said it was overrated. I like 7 out of 12 songs, that doesn't make sense for me not to appreciate it if I like the majority of the songs. I think people just give it to much credit. I like the album, but people overrate it. |

You think others overrate it, others think you underrate it. It's that simple. I love it! One of my favourites. So are Around The World In A Day. However, one of my ways of getting to know Prince music even better than I thought I did was to buy music that inspired his music. Because that is a way of getting to know the Prince genre. Listening alot of different funk, mainly stydying Parliament Funkadelics, The JBs, Sly & The Family Stone and alot of other disco funk. This gives us a wider picture of what him as a funk artists took and gave to the genre. And also gives us an understanding of what funk is all about. Is Prince good at this shit? Hell yeah! His new wave, punk, pop, rock influence did someting to that funk feel that made it similar, but on the same time something completely different and genuis. His way of making minimalistic funk that was more funky than The Meters. WTF? Hell yeah, it is and was imo. But why do I think that? Most funk nerds would say the opposite. But they don't hear Prince the way Prince can be heard. He has elements of no sound that I oftenly value alot more than the "overplaying" of other funk bands. But his experience with this "overplaying" made it possible for him to leave out sounds without destroying the groove, but actually making it often better. It's a funky understanding that Prince was a master of. What is funky with what you don't hear? Hear nothing, or hear silence. Silence is funky. It's not easy to understand all of this when being new to it. |

Prince definitely helped me get introduced to different forms of music because when critics would mention "this sound like xxx" I searched their music and agreed with what they were saying. This is part of Prince's genius IMHO. |

I don't mean to disrespect, but this is at least silly and high-handed. You should learn to be meeker, man. Although your attitude is the best to fill pages and pages of threads, so if that's what you want (I'm afraid it is), keep going, man.

The comment in italics. The thread can be interesting or not depending on the orger's contributions, but comments like the one I'm referring to don't help. |

I was defending myself from being called a "newbie"...
You might want to go re-read the entire thread, and look what other people posted. Your tripping over the words italics...what other people said are far worst, and doesn't help the thread also. So don't pick me out of the crowd.
And by the way, I really dig your threads. You should do Around The World In A Day again. |

You're right, I haven't read the entire thread.
Discussing an album can be very interesting, controversy can be nice, but with comments like that (and if there are others akin, even worse), the thing gets unfocused. A thread of 8, even 80 pages, but if you select only the constructive discussion, how much is it left?

Well I was just defending myself. The thread is pretty in the gutter anyways so it doesn't really matter. |

I've always liked ATWIAD and Diamonds and Pearls over Parade. Kiss is awesome, and the 2nd half of the album is great...but for me the first half lags too much.
But, like many early Prince records, Parade was a small window into his next great epic...Sign of the Times. I'm not sure SOTT would've been possible without Parade, especially lovable and quirky tracks like Dorothy Parker, Play in the Sunshine, and It. Quick question.
What's the story about a weird note/chord change during "Mountains"?
Someone says it had a weird middle section to it. |

That, my friend, is an oxymoron.
If you've only been a fan for 3 years then you are a newbie!
That doesn't make any sense. Nothing can be "new" after 3 years of experience. That "newbie" thing is something you guys made up.

Prince has been releasing music for 34 years. You say you've been following him for 3 years. Enough said! |
