You had literally just told someone "don't make dumb statements" when they were only sharing their opinion. Come on, dude.

Recent as in 2000-2011? or 87-2011?
Because I can name a few better than Parade.

I was also sharing my opinion to.

NO! "not a fan" yeah...ok

ive tried many times. thats how anotherlover and mountains grew on me. but the others, such as kiss, just irk me. its not that theyre boring, its that the sound of them annoys me. its not something that can grow on me. imo, mountains and anotherlover are the most "normal" (meaning, not the same weird, distinct parade sound as the others) sounding tracks on the album. thats why i can stand them. and sometimes it snows in april. venus de milo is pretty too, but thats it for me.
and, i think most peoples' love of this album must be at least partly based on nostalgia. i know im that way with a lot of albums. graffiti bridge being a good example. nobody else seems to like it but i love it.. for nostalgic reasons. [Edited 8/9/11 7:14am]

These Parade album debates that pop up constantly are always so funny....then again so's most of the debates that go on in this forum...
I didn't like Parade on first listen...after a while...It has now become one of my favourites. It has nothing to do with nostalgia on my part because I was 3 when this album was released and only listened to it for the first time a couple of years ago. I believe it's a well rounded and beautifully done album that takes you on a kind of journey and I love that. I love listening to it on a long drive or when I'm by myself surrounded by nature.
Every one has different tastes and it's okay to not like it....but the people who appreciate the album's brilliance have every right to.....just like you have the right to not like it.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
im not saying that nobody has the right to like it. i agree, everybody has different tastes. but what i think is silly is that so many people always say its the best album like its a fact, rather than an opinion, and those that dont like it are the ones in the wrong. the fact is, of course... that it all comes down to opinions.
we may as well talk about sports and politics while were at it.

I was in high school when it came out, and very much critically listening to albums and picking apart their concept, artwork, and music. I had just discovered the ridiculously vast gold mine of The Beatles music and was deeply listening to all their stuff and reading every book I could to figure out how and why they made all that stuff..
I thought much of Parade sounded weak on my first listen. The obvious 3 solid productions were also official singles: Boy & Girls, Kiss, Mountains.
I really really liked "I Wonder U" since I was in that surreal Beatles zone.
I thought "Christopher Tracy's Parade" was a weak arrangement to a great idea (much like I think The Beatles "Magical Mystery Tour" song is weak),
liked "New Position",
Warmed up to "Under the Cherry Moon" and now really love that ballad.
Thought "Life Can Be So Nice" was a weak arrangement, but appreciated the shock cut ending (like "I Want You, She's So Heavy").
I loved the arrangement of "Mountains" but thought the bridging verse to the chorus was weak melodically because he repeats the two notes in a drone "Love/Will - Con/quer- If/You...". I think putting a descending note voice in that little part as a harmony would have helped it. And then it might have caught on as a single.
I thought "Do You Lie" was boring and unremarkable, Thought "Sometimes it Snows" was boring and a bit cliche on the arrangement, although I loved that he goes off the normal key on that chorus to push it into wistfulness "sometimes I feeeeel".
I felt like "AnotherLover" should be great, I should be liking it, but it just didn't make me want to listen to it. I think maybe if the production had been a bit more interesting it would have been cool.
The b-sides and 12" mixes were all GREAT.

Black Album, on first, listen inspired me to start recording creative music. Just "Bob George" alone was a true mind opener as to how creative you could get within the 80's pop album format. The arrangments have so much muscle and creative elements. I can't get enough of this album. I wish there were 12" mixes to some of these tracks. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

I was just making a general comment...not neccessarily directed at you because like I said I see a lot of these debates especially about this album every now and then and I feel it's not neccessary to beat someone over the head if they don't get the album or call them names or whatever. Taste is subjective and it's not that deep.
So I think we kinda agree on some level.

I can't really give a sophisticated review on the songs based on the musicality but I know that I like what I like
Girls & Boys, AnotherLover, Kiss, Mountains and Do You Lie were instant favourites once I began to dig the album...I only fell in love with SISIA after hearing it live..I still prefer it when he does this acoustically. The other songs just fell into place later on ...partly because of my love for the movie, Under the Cherry Moon.

i just thought it was to me because you mentioned nostalgia. i probably started a couple of those debates youve seen lately... ever since a few months ago i started seeing how people worship this album, i just dont see why.
lol and people get so worked up when i say i dont like kiss. i made a thread about it once and everybody bit my head off over it.
"get out now, youre not a real prince fan." "anybody that doesnt like kiss is crazy." "you dont know real music." etc.

Ah I see. I kinda just read every one's comments and make my own comments based on the different things I've read combined. My comment just happened to come directly after yours.
And I remember that because I came to your defense But I'm sure by now you are used to what this place kind be like. Part of the many "perks" that come with posting on a public forum. Don't take it too seriously.
EDIT: I do remember something about you not liking it because the pictures of the era were mostly black and white? Correct me if I'm wrong...now I thought that was pretty funny though. [Edited 8/9/11 9:25am]

thanks
and thats right. maybe its funny because i didnt explain it the right way. its not so "judging a book by its cover" as it sounds. i cant really explain it any better than i did that day lol so.. oh well xD

I still believe this is an "Old fan" versus "Newbie fan" discussion.....
I you were fan there back then in the old 1980's, Prince was breathtaking innovative.
Parade:
Parade is funky and very trippy at the same time. Pure psychadelica, and yet very catchy, great funk-pop, some of his best ballads, and some "wilder" tracks, like New Positions and Life Can Be So Nice.
People were really like this when this album was released in april 1986:
To take Graffiti Bridge or Diamonds & Pearls over Parade is insane imo......
Parade is just a masterpiece, take another listen and try to enjoy, you newbies out there.

Parade is my ultimate favorite album, and Kiss is my least favorite song on it. I know what you mean though...I like Lovesexy...but I'm not crazy about it...and people think that is just that I could even say that. "not a fan" yeah...ok
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I don't know if I'm an old fan or a new one? I didn't become "fanatic" about prince untill about 1992/3....well after Parade was released but it is my favorite album. "not a fan" yeah...ok

Let's all simmer down, everybody. If someone doesn't enjoy Parade that much it's not such a big deal, right?

I also said Around The World In A Day(my overall favorite album) and The Black Album was better. Diamonds and Pearls to me, is a better album. "Cream", "Insataible","Diamonds and Pearls", "Gett Off", "Money Don't Matter 2 Night", "Live 4 Love", "Willig and Able" and "Walk Don't Walk" holds up to anything on Parade. But you can't really compare that seeing how Diamonds and Pearls was made 6 years later.
This has nothing to do with newbie vs oldie. I'm not a newbie, I've been a fan for 3 years. If someone doesn't like an album, don't just don't.
Compare Around The World In A Day to Parade.
Condition Of The Heart vs Sometimes It Snow In April. Tamborine vs I Wonder U & New Posistion and Do U Lie Raspberry Beret vs Kiss Temptation vs Anotherloverholenyohead Pasisley Park vs Girls and Boys Around The World In A Day vs Christopher Tracey's Parade The Ladder vs Venus De Milo and Under The Cherry Moon Pop Life vs Mountains
Aroud The World In A Day is better IMO

As I said earlier...I don't know where the line is when it comes to new fan or old fans....I didn't become a fan untill 1992....so that makes me what? BUT I think it's safe to say that you being a fan for 3 years are still a newbie. it's ok though, embrace it.
"not a fan" yeah...ok | |

Honestly I think WHEN you heard this album plays a part in how much it means to you. For those of us who purchased it when it came out it's a totally different trip than someone who got into Prince late and went backwards. Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I personally don't believe that. When I listen to For You, it makes me feel as if I'm in the 70's. Everytime I hear that album, it feels like my first time.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Well yeah For You does sound like the 70's, but Parade has a sound that's not as easy to catorgorize. Sorry but putting the needle down on Parade back in 86 is way different than finding it 20 years later on some digital format. Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

My father actually have all of Prince records on vinyl. That's how I first heard Parade.
I Wonder U & New Position are great tracks.

I feel invisible in here. :? I beg to differ. I didn't become a fan untill 1992 YET parade is my Favorite album. "not a fan" yeah...ok

Parade is a stroke of brilliance. Like said earlier, if it was as long as sign o the times it would be his best album. Amazing amazing. Christopher Tracy's Parade- 9/10 Good idea weak arrangement New Posistion- 10/10 Brilliant I Wonder U- 10/10 So trancy Under The Cherry Moon- 10/10 Beautiful track, I wish it was longer though Girls & Boys- 10/10 Brilliant Life Can Be So Nice 7.99/10 My least favorite but still amazing Venus De Milo- 11/10 Perfct track. Beautiful just beautiful Mountains- 12/10 AMAZING! JUST AMAZING! BEST TRACK ON THE ALBUM!!!! Kiss- 10/10 Love the part where he screams and then, his voice changes to normal. Awesome song Anotherloverholenyohead- 9.89/10 Great Track, could be a little better though Sometimes It Snows In April- 11/10 So Sweet, so beautiful. I cry every time.
Amazing album! For me it's his best along with Controversy and Come

lol You're missing the point. I have Abbey Road on vinyl but that album was released 10 years before I was born and you can't tell me that I had the same expierence as someone who played it the day it came out. Hearing Parade on my player then turning on MTV and watching the world premiere of Mountains and then seeing the Revolution on the Parade tour will with out a doubt make the album more special to some of us. Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Well, at the end of the day, the same songs are going to be on the album. So it wouldn't matter if Parade came out yesterday, it'll still sound the same to me.
I made my father buy me the Parade vinyl on my birthday 3 years ago. I had my room all setup all 80's like so I could get in a sexy mood, I put it on the record player and me and my girlfriend listen to it, and I was not moved at all. Except for "I Wonder U" n "New Position.
