I was talking to an orger about the Parade album being overrated, and we both agreed that it was overrated. While we were talking, I checked the album out, and I was suprised at how many songs I liked on the album:"Mountains", "I Wonder U", "New Posistion", "Sometimes It Snows In April", "Kiss"(I prefer watching the video when I hear this song),"Girls & Boys"and"Anotherloverholenyohead".

So what? I like 7 out of 12. It's still overrated. Maybe tracks like "Christopher Tracey's Parade",

"Under The Cherry Moon", "Do U Lie" and "Venus De Milo" slow down the tempo or something, because those songs would've been better left off.

I just don't understand why this album gets more love than "Around The World In A Day" or "Diamonds and Pearls". They're both better than Parade. But maybe it's a taste matter. I prefer to listen to The Black Album instead of Parade. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to bash the album...it's just over hyped.

Tastes certainly vary. Although I do prefer both ATWIAD & Black Album, I do NOT prefer D&P. IMO, D&P is by far his most over rated album. Couple classic tracks (Gett Off, Money Don't Matter) and a whole lotta pandering filler. Parade is High Art in comparison.

I love parade....... but i also love ATWD.

Call me crazy but what if Prince had combined these 2 albums? called in a Around the world in a parade or something razz

But really my only beef i have with the albums is tehre to short! same with dirty mind & controversy so it hink of them as one album sometmes. And mix it that way to wink

On that note

I adore Diamonds & Pearls!

Thunder is a rip raoring track, Cream was overrated to me as a single at first! but i like it now. Walk don't walk i love the vocals on it, Diamonds & Pearls is a beautiful ballad. And Get Off is a funky single... Money Don't Matter 2 Night, Insatiable both great as well.

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

OK, maybe i'm having a bad week or something, because I rarely get upset about stuff like this.

Parade when compared to Diamonds and Pearls is not a fair comparison. Don't get me wrong, I listened to D&P a great deal when it came out. The tour was brilliant.

Now, I don't know of one musician, singer, songwriter or any other artist who would agree that Parade is not even spinning on the same orbit as Diamonds & Pearls. Yes, SOTT was a highlight, but if anything Parade is more creative, inspired, challenging and unapologetic in its delivery. It is a piece of art, from start to finish. New position, Chris Tracy, I wonder U are some of the most inspired pieces of popular music 'art' ever recorded and I don't think that is just my opinion. They are completely timeless and completely void of all the stupid fashion chasing shit that D&P displayed. This is probably why Prince lost some of his creative respect in the 90's. It's not that the music was bad (some of it was though), it was that the attitude changed and with it some of the artistry was lost.

Anyway, everyone has their right to disagree of prefer one album over another, but to say D&P is 'better' than Parade is not correct! Better to an individual, but better overall, no way. There must be an equation to prove it.

Next we'll be saying that Musicology is a masterpiece and that Controversy is shit.

As another has said in the past... And now for a cup of tea!

Plus, the B-sides and out-takes from the Parade period can make 2 more albums that are better than D&P.

In my opinion of course.

It is not over rated, all of the songs on it are classics. It does not have any of the inconsistencies or filler that his post SOTT output has. The best thing about Parade is its unique sound and pure catchiness. Parade is a cohesive whole, not a patchy set of killer and filler like much of his later albums were (Post 1987 ones). Its in the Top 5 of Prince albums and only had the misfortune of preceding Sign o the Times and its earlier incarnations. The music on Parade is a natural progression from everything before it, and is only really eclipsed by Sign. Even the out takes from Parade are highlights, an Honest Man, Power Fantastic etc.

If Prince was making albums as brilliant as Parade today, the world would be a happier place.

Song ratings

Christopher Tracy's Parade 10/10

New Position 10/10

I Wonder U 10/10

Under the Cherry Moon 10/10 (Very underrated, beautiful ballad)

Girls and Boys 10/10

Life can be so nice 10/10

Venus De Milo 10/10

Mountains 10++++++/10 (Wow this was astounding, words could not describe how brilliant this track is)

Do U lie 10/10

Kiss 10/10 (The fact it was #1 and had been played to death is testament to how brilliant it is

Another lover ..... 10/10 (Another very god mid tempo pop song)

Sometimes it snows in April 10/10 (A beautiful tender ballad, and done well)

Total 120/120 = 100% A Definitely not overrated

Fixed. cool

I think Parade has more staying power than some of the other albums. I didn't love it from the off but over time i'd find myself returning to it more and more.

Give it a few years.

That's not true. I've been a fan since 08', and I still think it's overrated. I know older fans

who don't appreciate Lovesexy. And that's a classic.

It's a matter of taste.

people like you are the reason kids think the world turns upside down when they turn 18. theyre sick of being talked down to by people older than them.

so what if im young and relatively new to prince's music? im not your average music fan, the kind that just listens to whatever autotuned hip hop and kesha perry pop crud thats on the radio. my being young doesnt make my taste in music as under-developed as most others my age.

No fucking way is this album over-rated. Aging beautifully, if you can even call it aging, as it sounds as fresh as it did in 86. Someone mentioned how can it be under-rated when it got good reviews...but back in the day here in the US...I remember it getting OK reviews, and outside of Kiss wasn't a very good seller. So at the time it WAS under-rated. Now, however, amoungst us orgers, it's almost universally loved...but no way is it over-rated.

My one complaint? It's too short. My extended playlist version is the one that gets the most play.

Listen to this post then, Miss Dyvrdown. biggrin

and listen to the Parade album about 23 times, everything will open up for you.

It really is a matter of trying to digest this fantastic music...

It does not come easy to you like a final package:

This album - Parade - really is a lot better than recent albums.

Good luck, doing "the work". wink
