Well all I can say is he did some very interesting covers at his secret gig in the Banenbar in Amsterdam this afternoon. The best one was his cover of "Too Drunk To Fuck" by the Dead Kennedys, which of course he changed to "Too Drunk To Funk". As if to prove a point, he got Shelby to pour Absinthe into the other end of his kazoo all the way during this invigorating instrumental version. 5 minutes later, he was too drunk to even play it. The mood quickly changed as he went into a smooth jazz version of "3 Blind Mice". Renato's solo on the pink oboe (not his usual instrument of course) was scintillating.

The worst is when Shelby J comes in and sings though...

"The man has thousands of hits, some never ever played live.."

exactly................ thumbs up!

Those songs are classics. Overplayed maybe, but still classics.

I argee with your Shelby J comment though. She makes songs unlistenable. barf

lmfao at y'all.

lol Take the advice that you give others in reply#47 and relax, they are only opinions, if you are happy with what Prince plays live then great.

I understand that they're just opinions, opinions that have been made ad nasuem lately nonetheless. These threads are funny because everyone who complains about the covers isn't going to stop going to show or collecting the bootlegs because of them. So in what form is there relief for those who don't like the covers? Absolutely none. I have a friend who I met at the first W2A show in NYC(@MSG) who wasn't really impressed with the setlist. He had already attended the 2 previous shows in New Jersey and proceeded to attend the following 3 in New York at MSG. If you went to restaurant that you loved for a long time but found that the food was no longer appealing to you would you still continue to eat there? Everyone says the price of a ticket is supposedly entitling you to hear "Prince" songs instead of covers. At the same time when you continue to buy those tickets Prince thinks "Wow, they're eating this up" and decides to run with it! If you want something to change then do something about it otherwise it's just noise.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I have to say I am disappointed he choices to "Cover" songs. Especially when he hates people to cover his songs. (While also claiming "I got too many hits", Ok..well if you have too many hits, why are you repeating the same set-list in different arrangements? lol) I just find that too great of a contradiction to dismiss. AND if he is implying this in the sense of a "Studio Cover" he should clarify what he means, instead of making it seem it's just not FAIR when other artists sings his songs live. He has way too many songs that can be played live which are fantastic. I can understand about two to four cover songs, but those should be played rarely once in a cherry moon. Haha..I enjoy his covers though; such as: "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough", "COOL" & "Thank You Falletin Me Be Mice Elf Agin." However, this does not mean I want to hear those songs ALL the time he comes up on stage. Who wants that all the time? I love the guy, but he needs to sing and play those songs he teaches his band to remember..the 300 of them he always talks about. lol

Sorry. To show Prince that you don't like the covers at the next concert when he plays one get up and start booing as loud as you can. He'll get the message I'm sure and stop playing them.

i stopped going to concerts in 98 my friend. i was at lovesexy, a real show, you think i'm interested in seeing a spent talent turn into a cabaret act?

don't play me...i'm over 30 and i DO smoke weed....

These threads are funny because everyone who complains about the covers isn't going to stop going to show or collecting the bootlegs because of them.

Not everyone, I know of people (myself included) who had the means to attend Prince's latest UK show but but chose not to. The mundane setlist and fear of countless covers being played being just two reasons.

As for collecting bootlegs, they are free, while attending a Prince show (if you do not live near the venue) is becoming an increasingly expensive option to watch a show which is (again) increasingly taken up with cover versions and/or songs performed by other vocalists. Not everyone is happy with such a situation, some people who spend a lot of money (or not) on a Prince show would actually like to hear Prince play and sing his own songs.

There is a big difference between downloading a bootleg of the latest show for free and spending possibly a lot of money attending said show, at least if the setlist etc etc on the bootleg is not to ones liking then you can click stop and no harm done, no money wasted.

Not everyone is happy with Prince no matter what he does, there are countless people on this site (and before you jump down my throat, i'm not addressing you personally) who think that everyone should like and respect what Prince does no matter what, and i'm not going to apologize when I say that most people will find that that attitude is creepily unrealistic.

Moan, moan , moan... wink

Let's see,

TheDigitalGardener is clear, concise and pointed.

eireboy34 says "Moan, moan, moan..."

The winner of the debate: TheDigitalGardener!!

Really though, people can love Prince and/or his music and still review his shows/albums with a critical eye... it IS okay to complain about what we don't like just like it's okay to praise what we love. Those that want nothing negative to be said about Prince and who jump to defend any and all critiques are pretty fricking scary.

At least I'd be enjoying myself at the concert I 'chose' to attend. Sounds more fun then buying a ticket to a show with predetermined low expectations and then sitting there with a stick up your ass all night. Someone who 'chooses' to do that is really pathetic!

It doesn't make a lot of sense to go see someone just to gripe about it. No one is forcing anybody to go to a Prince concert. If you want to hear Prince songs, he has some records with them on it. lol If you don't want to hear the same old hits, there's records with non hits to listen to as much as you like.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I agree but then I disagree... With Prince concerts you NEVER know what to expect. And although the covers are redundant and some even not necessary.. some are very good. I like when he covers Jackson 5 songs in his shows. C'mon now yall know if Prince had the same line up of his own songs at EVERY show yall would get bored with that. You have to realize Prince caters to a wider audience at his shows. Die hard Prince fans are not the only ones that attends his shows. Believe it or not majority of his audience are casual listeners who may know three or four Prince songs. They really dont care and just come to see him live.
