PRINCE, what's with bloody "COVERS" at your concerts?

Come on, we should get a partial refund everytime we PAY to see a Prince concert & he plays covers! Who else agrees?

The man has thousands of hits, some never ever played live and he goes up on stage playing "play that funky music...".among other lame ass non Prince tunes that we DONT want to hear.

"

We pay to see Prince playing PRINCE music. Its like watching the "Terminator" say "go ahead, make my day" thats just not his line.

Then in interviews, he talks down at "covering" whether he's reffering to recorded or live, doesnt matter, just dont talk against it then turn around and short change your fans by doing it.

When others would cover Prince, it made me proud to be a fan...it reminds me of his relevance. Now its the other way around, the leader becomes the follower.

I tolerate Sly & Parliament/FUnkadelic covers only

any cover of ANY other artist is redundant / unnecessary....

And the guy is cheeky enough to bitch about others playing his songs...

I'm sure he feels that when others play his tunes it's a blatant rip but when he plays other people's stuff it should be considered as an honour for which they should be grateful.

I can't stand hypocrisy.

Whats' even more interesting, he's the 1st to bitch about the almighty buck & being ripped off & short changed, but then what about OUR almighty bucks that we pay to see him play PRINCE music only to hear "other" peoples stuff?

Sure, at aftershows. Playing covers at "regular" shows is a relatively new phenomenon (Musicology tour maybe?). When he played covers at aftershows it was special primarily because it was rare. He also didn't play the same five-ten covers over and over as he tends to do today. I think most Prince fans do not want to hear him play covers but if he must a little more variety would be very much appreciated.

What I find most disappointing is the lack of faith that Prince is showing in his new material ("new" meaning anything post WB). He has written some great songs over the last 10-15 years and I think many of them would benefit from being performed live.

when i pay to see prince perform, thats what i pay for. if all i cared about was paying to see him play specific songs i could stay home and listen to what i want. i just want to see the guy perform, no matter what he plays he kicks ass.

I think he's talking about people covering his songs on record, not live.

As for him covering other people, I think it's okay if he keeps it to a minimal, but very few of his covers have been really exciting. Most of the time they're just okay and for every cover he does, he could be performing a fan favorite we don't get to hear live very often.

I agree because a lot of songs aren't bad per se, but on record they were over-produced. Playing them live could definitely add that rawness they lack on record.

He's RECORDED cover himself...(imancipation album) why was/is it OK for HIM to record covers but then bash others for it?

& I agree with you on keeping it to to a minimal or at least give a veriety, surprise the crowd...not repeating the same old ones he does in EVERY concert.

Superbowl performance was great, he kicked ass...some online polls say the greatest so far.. but as Prince fans, we know he could have pulled it off with 100% PRINCE material. MJ did-no covers, Bruce did-no covers...& the most original man in music went up there and play a bag of other peoples stuff (still bad ass) but it takes away from his "Prince" image.

It's bad enough that he does so many covers. It's even worse that he often has his back-up singers sing them. I would be interested in hearing Prince sing Gnarls Barkley's 'Crazy' for example. I'm not interested in hearing Shelby sing it. And, of course, I'd rather hear him sing one of his own rarely/never performed songs...

Not dead, not in prison, still funkin'...

Well that's not entierly true. He played Proud Mary. A Case Of U. Hip Shaking Woman on the Gold Tour. How Much Is That Doggy In The Window on the Parade tour.

Also his horn section is always playing musical lines from here there and everywhere

Oh and A Night In Tunisia was always played during the Diamonds & Pearls concerts - Oooo and lest we forget Nows The Time during the Sign O The Times Concerts

So it's always been there but not in the percentage it is now.

PS; Do we count Yankee Doodle Dandy on the Purple Rain Tour lol

Fair enough but I think it was during the Musicology tour where covers became a fairly standard part of his regular shows. That was the point where night after night you got the same covers in the same part of the show (I'm excluding your two examples from the '80s as they were very brief and more like segues/intermissions than fully performed songs).

No I remember him doing covers at San Jose State University which would have been mid-90's I think. The first Hit n Run tour he was doing covers.

More though after Musicology. I just remember one or two covers at the Musicology shows, well maybe three or four.

I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Prince needs the covers. He's embarrased by the more risque stuff in his catalgue, and his newer cleaner material didn't make a dent on radio. He NEEDS to send the average concert-goer home happy to keep the bookings coming, so he can't play the less familiar tracks and leave the audience scratching their heads like he used to. He also doesn't want to sell out his religious beliefs. That's part of why he's playing "The Bird" and "Cool" now too. For better or worse, he's trying to strike a balance.

Problem is he's about a little too late. No one would care for him doing covers I'm afraid. And also one can easily spout out how on one side he derides anyone doing a cover but chooses to do covers and even talked about banning people from doing covers of his songs but yet he wants to do covers too. lol

there was a point in tyme he did a music video to every song.. who knows maybe he still does.

. as for seeing him live.. i go to see him perform music.. sure i would perfer it to be all his but if he wants to play covers longs it good i dont care.as for shelby and the other people performing.. yeah that has got to go unless he is doing a change in clothing or something.. or maybe its a medical thing having throat issues and it helps to have breaks in the middle... as for some albums you should think maybe reason why he doesnt play it has personal reasons.. the love for mayte the baby all happen during emanicapation.. i wouldnt want to go back and bring that up in my life .. maybe he just cant deal with those songs.. we all try to lock up bad tymes so maybe thats why doesnt play those songs.. and i do agr

This.

I can definitely understand people getting bored of some lame, overdone tunes like Everyday People, Thank You Falletin Me Be Mice Elf Agin, etc. but I feel like it's a Prince show and I didn't only come to hear his songs. I came to see him perform. I actually think it would be cool if he did some unexpected covers like when he did "Creep" by Radiohead or "In the Middle' by Jimmy Eat World nod

Don't go, problem solved.

Did I say Prince hasn't covered people? I was merely explaining that I think Prince was talking about other artists recording their version of songs he wrote, hence the fact he's calling them lazy and saying that kids think such and such wrote that song when it's actually someone else's song.
