Crazy!!! Yesterday I watched Prince's acoustic version of Cream then on the radio later I heard "Get it On" and I was like that is totally Cream!!!! I'd never noticed and then today I read that Gary Numan made that connection. Hmmmm, maybe this has been known for a long time but it's new and interesting to me.

Good read!
When Numan said Pop stars should do things...drink, be scary, have attitude, I thought of G.G. Allin.

^^ Mmmm, I don't think he meant as scary as Allen.

Years ago someone loaned me a copy of "The Pleasure Principle" by Gary and I was BLOWN away. You can truly hear where P got his "new wave synth funk" sound for the "Controversy" and "1999" LP's.
Some people are hip to "Cars" but his other stuff is bangin' too.

It's actually the guitars with the synths doing pop melodies that made Tubeway Army standout (and maybe the pierrot clown imagery hahah).
Dez Dickerson has also mentioned Ultravox as an influence. I can hear it big time.
Had they got to hear Fad Gadget, I'd think that also would have been excited by those songs.

The similarity has been noted on since it was released.
I know T.Rex never had a big presence in the US, but I think Get It On was their biggest hit over there?
Great band BTW | |

Fad Gadget! I interviewed Daniel Miller a couple of months ago for my Depeche Mode documentary, of course we got into the history of Mute and he talked a lot about Fad Gadget. |

Tell us more!
Love FG.. first time I saw him he was supporting Toyah (!) in Dublin...I instantly loved him.....last time I saw Frank was when he supported DM in Paris.
Great Guy RIP | |

Daniel Miller is a real unsung hero.
(For others reading this, he made the song Warm Leatherette and started Mute Records)

Bowie (and Kraftwerk) showed the way. Numan made it popular/mainstream, that's why Bowie was sooooooooo jealous back in the 79-81 era, lol. Prince was surely a fan of Numan during 1979/1980, like many other artists who started using synths in 1980...

I thought the EXACT same thing after I saw that Numan cover the other day.
Prince should be called James Richard Numan. "You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup...Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend." - Bruce Lee
"Water can nourish me, but water can also carry me. Water has magic laws." - JCVD

exaggeration. hyperbole
but yes, the influence is there...

But what does Gary Numan think? "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Numan was definitely a big influence on Prince. As Joe says, I doubt there are very many artists from that time period using synths that weren't influenced by what Gary was doing. |

Trent Reznor's also a huge fan, and has had Gary at his live shows. You can see Trent rockin' the tambourine on "Cars", but this was a song he covered in the studio and got to do live.

I wouldn't be surprised if Devo (who were at the PR premiere) was on his radar as well. But as far as Kraftwerk go? Maybe when "Planet Rock" came out.
Bowie's "Station to Station" was when American R&B intersected with German synth music. After that, Bowie grabbed Eno (and Iggy Pop) and came up with some really strange music that was way ahead of its time, which of course led on his successful projects with Talking Heads and U2.
But for someone growing up in Minneapolis, he had a lot of resources when it comes to music. Any place that has public radio, late night DJs playing 'free form' music, a handful of clubs that bring in nationally known acts and college radio stations is going to get a pretty decent music education.

Hard to say. We take for granted that we can watch British TV appearances and find Tubeway Army records everywhere. Gary Numan had MTV exposure, but that was later. Gary Numan had a lot of contemporaries (Human League, OMD, Throbbin Gristle, etc.) who were just as likely to have been an influence on synth groups.
Oh, and let's not forget Klaus Nomi for the style.
