So, has anyone read Jake Brown's "Prince In The Studio (1975 - 1995)" yet?

It's out on Kindle, and it's only $9.99 http://www.amazon.com/Pri...004J8HXFO/ . Has a publication date saying "2010", Amazon quotes "January 1, 2010" as the publication date. (Annoyingly the Kindle edition is delivered starting at the end of the book.)

There's also a paperback with a hideous cover: http://www.amazon.com/Pri...972614249/ . But this edition seems to be elusive: Amazon estimates 1-3 months for shipping. Intriguingly, there's only one seller offering the book, he claims to have it in stock and charges $100+ for it.

The previously announced edition of his book seems even more elusive: http://www.amazon.com/Pri...979097665/ .

Cool, new reading material. Let's hope it's any good.

10% in so far, and boy, this is a bit of a chore. We're still not in the studio, and so far all I've read is a not-so-short hirstory of Prince's early years. 10% in and he's just met Pepe Wilie.

Worse is that he's quoting at length from older profiles (especially Rolling Stone) and that every now and then the sentences seem to have incorrect punctuation. (At least twice I've noticed a case where a dot was instead of a comma.)

The author claims to be a huge fan, yet in his introduction he doesn't give his opinion on Prince's output, but instead quotes at length from reviews as if to convince readers that Prince's music in great.

In the introduction he thanks a bunch of engineers (Susan Rogers etc.) and also Matt "Dr" Fink, but I'm wondering how much of those talks/interviews ended up in the book. Like I said: I'm at 10% already, and we're in the mid-1970s.

Quite frankly, I doubt this book exists (except for the Kindle edition). People have been looking for it for 2 years and nobody ever encountered a copy. Plus: there's now a new version of the book with virtually the same title but with another publisher and another cover?

WRT the "new" edition: the publisher's website doesn't mention the book: http://www.rocknrollbooks...itles.html

Oh wait, I'm wrong, he's got his own section: http://www.rocknrollbooks...books.html In which he says: " ‘Prince: in the Studio’, due from SCB Distribution in March, 2011." If you go to the distributor's website, the book is mentioned in their catalog as "coming April 2011" (page 9): http://www.scbdistributor...atalog.pdf

If there is any physical edition, it's gonna be this one.

... into Prince again? According to B's profile, it says NOT a fan thinking

BVH does have some interesting points of view when it comes to P's music and such. Sometimes I agree most times I don't. I'll have to look into that book though.

Anyone who appears and posts in here with such passion cannot say they are not a fan LOL

The mere fact they are taking the time to post on a Prince forum shows they must have more than a casual interest!

Would a non fan seriously be interested in getting their hands on this book??

I read the sample on Kindle and as BVH mentioned, the beginning re-told history is inaccurate and is mainly quotes from Rolling Stone via princetext.tripod.com. There is a bad review on Amazon now that says the book is just a rehash, but I would love to hear more from anyone that has read most or all of the book, or even just the chapter on Parade. Is the whole thing like the beginning or there actually good interviews with new information? We have waited so long for this book and there is no topic more interesting to me than Prince in the recording studio!

The cheapest Kindle is $114. Is that really that much?

And AFAIK Kindle books are DRM'ed and converting them isn't possible. You can hightlight sections and save them as notes, but I doubt they'll let you do that to the entire book.

Congrats. You linked to a topic on a DIFFERENT book -- as is clearly stated in that thread. And there's not a single post in there reviewing the book.

I guess the ipad seems like a more fun investment (though I haven't gotten that yet either) that cold serve as a reading device among other things. I hope all the digital written media becomes multiplatform.

The thread title refers to a different book, but a lot of the discussion ended up being about Jake's book by virtue of the fact that the names are similar and people got confused pretty much from the second post.

There's no review per se, but madhouseman's post offers more info about Jake and what he's expecting to be in the book than most of what's in this thread (other than your thoughts on the book thus far, which are appreciated), so it seems to be a perfectly useful and relevant link.

As for kindle, I have a kindle app on my phone (HTC) which lets me read kindle versions no problem (other than it being a phone-sized screen, of course, thus I tend to use it more for reference books). Not sure if iPhone has this, but for non-kindle android folk, check out the kindle app.

Actually, i just went to the amazon link to get the book (the kindle price is saying $7.99 now) and I noticed on the right-hand side:

Read books on your computer or other mobile devices

Also works on iPod Touch

Ok, I just bought it and the first thing I notice is that Chapter 1 is titled "Prince 'Skipper' Roger Nelson - 1958-1968"

The first line reads, "One of Rock & Roll's greatest stars - Prince Roger Nelson - was born..."

First problem???? eek

Surely someone who is a huge fan and who has researched Prince enough to write an entire book about him could get his name right??

Actually the name on his birth certificate is Prince Roger Nelson, even though he was named for his dad's "Prince Rogers Trio". Usually the media gets this wrong, but you can see the birth certificate in Jon Bream's classic book.

No, his name is "Rogers". "Roger" was an error and this has been corrected.

And he also repeats the "his mom was Italian" bullshit.

The first 10% of the book seems largely copy-pasted from a bunch of articles he found at the "Prince In Print" website. He also credits Per Nilsen's DMSR (IIRC) and Alex Hahn's book, but he doesn't seem to have read them or learned anything from them.

Prince said in a recent interview that they didn't know the origin of some family on his mother's side, so perhaps there is Italian blood that side although that would be speculation.

I always found it strange though how the credits of Purple Rain include lots of Italian sounding names, his management then especially all had Italian sounding names - Magnoli, Cavallo, Ruffalo etc, this could be how the speculation came about.
