Interesting Twitter conversation reveals details about Prince's reunion with W&L at the Brits in 2006

About a day ago, there was a conversation that started out about Tamar's new album, but then mentioned the fact that she sang backup vocals on Purple Rain at the 2006 Brits (where Sheila, Wendy & Lisa were also on stage) while W&L weren't miked.

You can see screenshots of the relevant parts here: http://imgur.com/a/rlp4x

I wholeheartedly agree with Renata! Such huge opportunities were missed with that whole setup, and it wasn't even properly advertised.

Tamar and the Twinz should've just sat their asses down and let the band do their thing. Don't get me wrong. I think Tamar can sing and all, but this performance should've been completely focused on the "reunion" aspect of it all. I tell ya, if something is 99.9% flawless, Prince will find a way to fuck it up with that .1%.

You reunited with Prince in 2006 at the Brit Awards. Tell us a little bit about what led to that reunion and what it was like to rehearsing for the show. Also, the version of "Te Amo Corzon" played that night was very different, did you all work out that arrangement together?

Lisa:

Prince had been in touch with Wendy a little during that time and he asked us both if we would come play at the Brits with him. We hung out a couple of times and had dinner. We jammed... just the three of us. It was a BLAST! Then Sheila came and a few of us played around with Te Amo... we were just in his living room with a guitar and piano... congas? And it was really nice. So, yes, we worked out a little arrangement together.

Wendy:

We thought that the Brits would be a great time for me and Lisa and Prince to the world that we are stronger, bigger, better and truer than ever. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out that way. There was no press and no direction from Prince to let the people know that was happening. So the result was no one knew that me and Lisa were even in that band! The last song of the night was "Let's Go Crazy" and the cameras were on the twins. It was a real bummer. But it is what it is. We hoped it would be different.

The Twinz & Tamar should have been on a stage ledge behind Wendy / behind-on the side of Lisa, if Prince needed them in there. This is what that show should have looked like

Ah, so that's why that version of "Te Amo Corazon" really did remind me of the late-Revolution -era. Really wish the studio version would have been more similar. There's nothing wrong with the composition itself, but a rougher arrangement would have suited it better.

Are you sure it's from a reliable source? Also, if so, someone might be out of a future job! Can't trust anyone these days...folks always talking and sharing shit in the open that they shouldn't!

The ironic bit, Bart, is that Renata ALSO said in that SAME conversation, that her pictures from that trip, which were shared online for the benefit of her friends/family, had been posted around on Prince websites.

And you've gone and posted the conversation here.... yes, Twitter is public and blah blah blah, but Renata was talking to Chris in a one-on-one conversation and not for the benefit of you screen-grabbing it and posting it here as part of your pathetic continued tirade against every little thing that Prince does which you consider to be wrong.

Seriously, this thread is not reflecting badly on Prince. It's reflecting badly on YOU.

Grow up.

You're seriously overestimating Barty Boy. He clearly has an agenda, and it's quite pathetic.

I fail to see how this is interesting. We all know Prince & co don't always make the wisest decisions. This is a "private" convo stating the thing wasn't well organized. So...?

I don't see how this was a missed opportunity. The public hardly care about Prince, I highly doubt they would have any interest in Wendy & Lisa, or even know who they are. Hell, I didn't even care! smile

If the public did not care about Prince he would be playing at your local park for free. I can tell you that the masses do not care about Wendy and Lisa. I watched this performance on T.V. and it went over just fine. For these two to complain that the cameras should have been focused on them is crazy it was not a revolution reunion just two old band members joining P for a some songs.

You do not see Sheile E complaining that cameras are not focused on her only or grand announcements should be made that she is joining P onstage.

Strange thread.

It's not as if anyone couldn't imagine such a conversation, it's just that they decided, in their wisdom, to have it on Twitter confused

Nothing particularly newsworthy here, except perhaps another reminder of why Twitter should be used responsibly (if at all), particularly by professional people for whom discretion is presumably part of their job description.

I agree Laura. Others are making an assumption that something went wrong and that Prince was unprofessional because the "reunion" wasn't the primary focus. I didn't get the sense that this was a reunion from Prince's perspective at all. They were just part of the band. If he wanted to put some focus on them, he would have given them a small solo performance (like he gave Sheila) or at least said their names during the performance. He did neither. So I personally think this went exactly how Prince wanted it to go. All that aside it was a great performance.

Agree. If it was about a W&L reunion then that's what it would have been and it would have been announced as a reunion with them, but apparently it wasn't. I took that performance as past band members coming together with the currrent ones at the time, including Tamar and the Twinz. I didn't see it take any light off of W&L, during that performance, plus the performance was not about them, it basically appeared to be former band members, W&L, Sheila E, jamming together with the current band members for one big jam session on stage. Maybe one day he'll invite W&L to appear at one of his current shows, to do one or two of their past songs together. He did have Wendy on stage with him for a short time, at the Target Center on 7/7/07 in Minnesota, so it's not like one of out of the duo, never came back to perform on stage with him.

Lisa & Wendy were so sidelined in this "reunion" you have to think Princey was playing power games.

No, I wasn't. Did they have that conversation for the benefit of you continuing to bitch and complain about Prince, grasping at any and every possible straw to criticize him, as you've been doing for at least a decade now?

No. That wasn't the point of their conversation.

Let me ask you this - why did you feel the need to post this in the first place?

Renata's awesome, and I'm a total W&L fan, but however this went down, Prince WANTED it that way. They are entitled to have an issue if it was indeed different to any expectations they might have had - you, however, are not.

So you're criticizing him for what? Doing exactly what he wants to do?

I don't know I think it was something 2 be different. I saw the whole thing and the pre interview with Sheila Wendy & Lisa specifically, it's also why there were photo shoots with just them, I believe Prince even had them in a dressing room/space just for those 3.

I don't think the complaint is about having focus on W&L, I do believe the cameras seemed to be on the Twinz & Tamar a bit too much and it took away from the band element.

According to the interview with Wendy, the shows performance(musical arrangement) was orchestrated by Prince Wendy Sheila & Lisa at Prince's house. Not Tamar & the Twinz

Sheila E at this time until now is such a regular presence that she didn't need any announcement.

Yet Prince still does announce her.

I don't think it's an issue about being focused on W&L & Sheila but that a lot of focus was on the Twinz & Tamar probably too much

Maybe because the Twinz & Tamar are better to look at. I am sorry but this is show business and W&L are not exactly eye candy for T.V viewers
