I don't think it's an issue about being focused on W&L & Sheila but that a lot of focus was on the Twinz & Tamar probably too much

Maybe because the Twinz & Tamar are better to look at. I am sorry but this is show business and W&L are not exactly eye candy for T.V viewers

Well that's just a sad indictment on...so many things.

Renata and Chris answered that today. Guess what: you were wrong.

No, I wasn't. Did they have that conversation for the benefit of you continuing to bitch and complain about Prince, grasping at any and every possible straw to criticize him, as you've been doing for at least a decade now?

Sweet Jebus. Seriously? You do realise that YOUR OWN WORDS are still in this thread, right?

And you've gone and posted the conversation here.... yes, Twitter is public and blah blah blah, but Renata was talking to Chris in a one-on-one conversation and not for the benefit of you screen-grabbing it and posting it here as part of your pathetic continued tirade against every little thing that Prince does which you consider to be wrong.

That's what YOU siad -- and guess what? Renata contradicted that. But then you start to make up bullcrap

No. That wasn't the point of their conversation.

Oh really? So I made up those tweets from Renata where she complains about Prince screwing this up?

Let me ask you this - why did you feel the need to post this in the first place?

Because it showed insight from a knowledgeable source. Cosnidering the gag orders Prince forces peopel to sign, that's rare. Yet here is W&L's manager, talking in public on how Prince utterly botched this reunion.

Renata's awesome, and I'm a total W&L fan, but however this went down, Prince WANTED it that way. They are entitled to have an issue if it was indeed different to any expectations they might have had - you, however, are not.

But you are? You are even entitled to have an opinion about thet things I can have an opinion about. ARE YOU INSANE? Looked in a mirror lately?

So you're criticizing him for what? Doing exactly what he wants to do?

For working with dimwitted bimbos who don't know that the MUSICIANS they're sharing the stage with are the ones who WROTE THE SONGS they're singing on/dancing to. Which is pretty rich considering Prince is always boasting about him being a real musician. This is just more evidence of him being full of shit. But like so many fans you just want people to ignore the facts and hate it when someone points this out.

If the public did not care about Prince he would be playing at your local park for free. I can tell you that the masses do not care about Wendy and Lisa. I watched this performance on T.V. and it went over just fine. For these two to complain that the cameras should have been focused on them is crazy it was not a revolution reunion just two old band members joining P for a some songs.

You do not see Sheile E complaining that cameras are not focused on her only or grand announcements should be made that she is joining P onstage.

Sheila E at this time until now is such a regular presence that she didn't need any announcement.

You should be ashamed of yourself for making such a superficial and callous post. That's your justification? You'll say anything to take Prince's side.

Oh really? Then show me the EXACT tweet where Renata says "We are having this conversation purely for the benefit of obsessive Prince troll haters who waste all their time attacking him over the most minute of issues that have no personal relevance to their lives, to give them more ammo for their endless nonsensical tirades on message boards."

Guess what? She didn't say that. If you REALLY believe that the intent behind that conversation was so that you could make this entirely useless thread and continue your pointless vendetta against Prince that's been going on for over a decade now, you need some serious psychological help. Wake up - Prince doesn't give a fuck about what you think, but apparently you haven't learned that since AMP. You're gonna be 60 years old throwing hissy fits online because Prince bought a car and you didn't like the color of it. Pointless. Stop whinging.

Oh really? So I made up those tweets from Renata where she complains about Prince screwing this up?

Not what I said. Renata can have an issue. It's her life. It has nothing to do with you. But here you are, hi-jacking it as part of your troll campaign. When was the last time you posted anything positive about Prince? Sheila has a Twitter and posts positive things about Prince all the time - I don't you see making threads about those. You're a hater - pure and simple.

Yet here is W&L's manager, talking in public on how Prince utterly botched this reunion.

She never said he botched it. She said in her opinion, things could have been done differently. HER opinion. I loved the Brits show. Again, however it went down - PRINCE WANTED IT THAT WAY. Saying he "botched" it implies that he wanted it one way, and failed to pull it off in that way. But that ain't the case. Prince wanted the focus on Tamar and the Twinz. They were members OF HIS BAND. Wendy and Lisa were there as a nod to the hardcore fanbase (a small proportion of the viewership). Nothing more, nothing less.

But you are? You are even entitled to have an opinion about thet things I can have an opinion about.

There's a difference between having an opinion and having an issue with something. Anyone would think Prince killed your dog, the way you blather on and on and on about complete minutiae.

Oh look, you're wrong again. Wendy and Lisa didn't write "Purple Rain". Wendy and Lisa didn't write "Let's Go Crazy". And obviously, they didn't write "Te Amo Corazon" or "Fury". Oh look - that's all the songs that were played that night. You're SERIOUSLY complaining that a couple of DANCERS and a young protege act aren't musically literate? Also - how the fuck do you know that they don't know anything about Wendy & Lisa? That's an assumption. They might be the biggest W&L fans on the planet FOR ALL YOU KNOW. It's not like that would have made a difference - they're employed by Prince and for the third time - the way things happened WAS EXACTLY HOW PRINCE wanted it.

So who's the one that's full of shit? It's you - not Prince. Who's the one ignoring the facts? You're just pulling them out of your ass.

Twitter is a public service and the manager knows fully-well. She, being a manager of a multimillion-dollar music duo, is fully aware of who can see her twitter and that what she says is no confidential. Thus, she doesn't need to clarify her comments are intended to be posted elsewhere because her compliance with it being posted publically does so silently. smile

Additionally, you have absolutely no way of knowing if it was botched or not beyond what info the people involved provide. Thus far, Prince has not made any comments about it. Logic and history states that he likely wouldn't criticize his own operation regardless (he rarely ever does). So you can only go off the word from people who WERE involved and would know better than someone not involved (aka YOU and everyone else in this thread). The fact you somehow want to twist her words into something other than what they are to paint Prince in a positive light is weird and try-hard. It's a fucking twitter. Not too hard to get to the point and understand the point.

You're fighting against Bart's actual facts (the tweets) with conjecture. Nothing Bart has stated was purely based on opinion. However, you have absolutely no idea how Prince wanted the affair to be - you only know what you saw which means little.

I understand that - but the fact that any time anything remotely negative is said about Prince, some people decide to use it to further their Prince hate campaigns gets old, fast.

And the tweets aren't facts - they are opinions. Biased opinions, because as a manager, OF COURSE Renata would want W&L to be involved as much as humanly possible. Clearly, if Prince wanted them to be miked, and wanted more focus on them as opposed to the Twinz/Tamar, they would have been. Prince runs a tight ship. History and logic tells us that, too.

So to view the whole thing as botched, a missed opportunity, or whatever.... basically, spinning it in any way as being negative on Prince, is unfair, and pointless. It's one thing for Renata to have an issue. It's a whole OTHER thing for any fan (especially one that takes any opportunity to hate on Prince) to use it as more fodder for their hate campaign. Completely unnecessary.

But why take issue with the term "missed opportunity"? It was a missed opportunity. They weren't mic'd and they had shadows on their faces most of the night. You know damn well what the point was - to show a history reunion between Prince and his 3 favorite gals. Instead, 3 other random gals that only we here have heard of were showcased and then gone. It's a missed opportunity.

Yes, the manager is biased, but the manager is still involved. And truthfully, Prince only has so much control over things anyway. I'm sure the Grammys would have no problem telling P what to do. Do you read P bios thinking, "Wow they don't know what they are talking about, they are biased, etc"? These are people with insight to things you and I have not even a prayer of being involved in. If anything, I would trust the people involved because their history backs them up.

He probably posted it because there are some of us who saw this wasted opportunity in 2006 as a HUGE disappointment, compared to what it it could've/SHOULD'VE been, an we wanted to know more about it. Wendy & Lisa have more personality and musical "imagination" than his entire band for the past 5 years combined! And, I'm probably being conservative with that number. And then add Sheila to the mix, and you can forget about it!!

Yeah, Prince "wanted it to go that way", but that just shows just how out of touch the guy has been for a long while now.

That depends entirely on your perspective. The ONLY people that care about a reunion between Prince and W&L are the hardcore fans, the folks like us who post online and such. A very small minority. With all due respect to the girls, only a minority of people watching the awards would even know who they are.

As for the Twinz & Tamar - the Twinz were his employed dancers. They did nothing different on that show than on the dozens of others shows they've performed at with Prince. And, at the time, Tamar's album was due to be released on Universal, so obviously Prince is going to want to showcase her as much as possible, as both the producer and exec producer of her album.

Therefore it was entirely logical to showcase Tamar more than anyone else.

And if Prince only has so much control over it anyway - then in that case, it's even MORE unfair for anyone to be blaming him for however it went down!

And yes, of course I read P's bios with that in mind. You'd have to be moronic to not read, say, "Possessed" without being aware that Hahn had a lawsuit AGAINST Prince which therefore logically clouds his opinion of him. The greatest written books mean that you never have to wonder whether the author is biased - like all of Per Nilsen's work, which is amazing.

I just find it absolutely incredulous that people are criticizing Prince over what was a stellar performance. Like I said, if there was an expectation on Renata, Wendy & Lisa's part that this was going to be more than it was, then THEY are entitled to have an issue about it. Cynical "fans" hijacking that for their own hate campaigns is pretty fucking pathetic.

isn't it kinda funny that the initial conversation was about tamar, and now that her album is released, we're talking about wendy and lisa? lol...

anyway, as a participant in the conversation, i thought it was interesting. that's why when Renata mentioned the brits i asked a question. it's not unreasonable for fans to express disappointment about how an artist chooses to do things. prince is absolutely my favorite musician and i listen to him and his work more than any other. that's been true for (eek!) nearly 30 years now. the great affection i have for him does not preclude me from being critical of some of his choices (and sadly, most of his recent ones). if an artist wants only positive praise for everything they do, they simply cannot ever release anything to the public. anything, ever. and that's ridiculous -- you take the good with the bad.

my favorite music from prince is revolution era. when he skipped the family jamm, i figured he would never be onstage with wendy and lisa again, which broke my heart. when the brits happened, i was ecstatic, but i wish it would have gone down differently. obviously not every prince fan feels that way, but it's not a sentiment that only renata and/or wendy and lisa can express. news flash: hardcore fans are passionate (see: this thread).

"purple rain" was not a prince solo composition. it was written by prince and the revolution - the whole band, not just prince. also, renata did state in the tweets that the twinz had no clue who wendy and lisa were -- that was not an assumption on bart's part.

and just to reiterate: nothing anyone says on the internet is private. it is always subject to being picked up, torn apart, analyzed, repackaged. important to remember that every time you click "post response", "submit", "tweet", etc.

let me come over it's a beautiful day to play with you in the dark

And you've gone and posted the conversation here.... yes, Twitter is public and blah blah blah, but Renata was talking to Chris in a one-on-one conversation and not for the benefit of you screen-grabbing it and posting it here as part of your pathetic continued tirade against every little thing that Prince does which you consider to be wrong.

Seriously, this thread is not reflecting badly on Prince. It's reflecting badly on YOU.

Grow up.

But not just hardcore fans a lot of music critics radio djs other musicians etc etc know Prince & the Revolution and I've read a few too many statements and thoughts by people who I wouldn't consider hardcore fans who not only know who Wendy & Lisa are but think Prince should do some work with the Revolution.

Remember Prince.org people aren't the only (hardcore) Prince fans, they are all over the place and not all of them are members of Prince.org

Me'Schell NDegeochello Madonna TLC(T-Boz) Halle Berry Mariah Carey Glee Producers(?) Justin Timberlake etc etc are Prince fans especially of his 1980's work they they are just a few

"purple rain" was not a prince solo composition. it was written by prince and the revolution - the whole band, not just prince. also, renata did state in the tweets that the twinz had no clue who wendy and lisa were -- that was not an assumption on bart's part.

ASCAP only has Prince as a registered writer of the song. I've never heard of any bandmember claiming they deserve a credit for "Purple Rain". And I just interviewed Matt Fink for my "Parade" documentary and he said Prince was honest with writing credits and credited people for what they wrote, which is why he has a credit on "Computer Blue" because he came up with the bassline groove that the rest of the song developed from.

Also, to somehow claim that it reflects badly on Prince that his hot young DANCERS don't know who W&L are just bizarre. Totally bizarre. What next? - "Prince sucks because Diamond & Pearl didn't know who Andre Cymone was". lol

I half expect to hear that to come out of some of these haters mouths one of these days. Complete nonsense.

Actually from a Chicago radio interview around the time of the Purple Rain anniversery thing... 2009(?) .. with Lisa Coleman & Wendy Melvoin, much of the Purple Rain music was a full band collaboration, ... according to Lisa (women have better memories than men) the band for a was locked away in a warehouse/studio creating/writing/coming up with parts & cords for the music.

The opening chords that go through the song:Purple Rain was created by Wendy Melvoin

Wait. I have Intimate Moments (revisited) and it has Prince doing all these songs on piano, solo..Strange Relationship, Purple Rain, 17 Days etc. It appears to me he had most of the words and at the very least the melodies. Even in the Purple Rain anniversary dvd extras, the Girlbros even state that Prince wrote Purple rain. Sure they added embellishements but come on now. Prince wrote that.

Ah, so that's why that version of "Te Amo Corazon" really did remind me of the late-Revolution -era. Really wish the studio version would have been more similar. There's nothing wrong with the composition itself, but a rougher arrangement would have suited it better.

Hmmm... as long as it didn't lose the Clare Fischer strings; they're sublime.

Prince's guitar phrasing on the Brits performance is extremely tasty.

Exactly. I've NEVER heard of W&L claiming to have written PR. At least not anything substantial enough to where they deserve a writing credit.

I was about to say. In the Purple Rain anniversary DVD Wendy and Lisa both talked about their contribution to the song, but credited Prince mostly.

Naw. Say what you want about Bart, he always does his homework. He may come across as bitter and angry, but I can't fault the information he presents.

Often you can. But he tries. Bless him.

No I've never heard anyone say they had co-writing with Purple Rain.

But again we can't take away the creation of the actual music, which Prince hasn't always been clear who offered what

That's only a part of the process.

Prince gave Wendy & Lisa access to a lot of the unreleased music and even though he had stuff started they came in and added/updated music... ie Strange Relationships, New Position, they even worked on the original Old Friends 4 Sale.

How do you define an embellishement... becaue that could easily be large foundation 2 a song

Kiss" started as a short acoustic demo, about a minute in length, with one verse and the chorus. Prince gave the song to the funk band Mazarati for their debut album. Mazarati and producer David Z. drastically reworked the song, giving it its stripped-down minimalist sound. When Mazarati delivered the song to Prince, he was amazed at their work and decided to take back the song for himself. He replaced their lead vocal, added the guitar break in the chorus and edited the song to its present form. Mazarati were credited for their backing vocals, which Prince left intact.

In this very thread some have said W&L wrote it.
