I guess my lack of actually caring about an announcement that doesn't involve a new album is showing. To me, it's a typically vague mention about Prince's rich friends who will show up at a show with him at some point. Okay. None of those artists are particularly exciting to me, Prince's new shows aren't particularly exciting to me, and Prince doesn't have an internet presence with which to make these stupid announcements about nothing other than to call a press conference.

To me, it's as open and shut as it always is with Prince.

I understand your cynicism to some extent but does the other artists being rich really make any difference one way or the other? If he brings Stevie Wonder out I'm not gonna be mad cuz it's another rich guy lol.. Besides a lot of these names, Janelle, Esperanza, are still up-and-coming and probably far from wealthy..

(personally I'm much more excited about new shows than new albums)

Cerebus, I hope you are right that this NYC gig is a kick-off to a broader U.S. concert and not just a reisdency in NYC. I agree that it seems odd to hook up with Live Nation just for a few gigs in NYC.

To those who don't think that Prince's live shows are exciting anymore then why don't you post a yawn icon and move on... And, yeah, that is Prince... lol

It's creepy to me that your first inclination is to tell someone else what to do rather than to do something yourself.

Prince Announces New Concert Series with Janelle Monae, CassandraWilson

Today, Prince headed to Harlem to the iconic Apollo Theater to announce he would be serving as Master of Ceremonies for a new concert series called 'Welcome To America,' which will be kicking off this December.

Though he was mum on details like dates and tour stops, the 52 year-old singer/songwriter told the crowd that 'Welcome to America' will showcase some of his favorite artists including Maceo Parker, Janelle Monae, Mint Condition, Esperanza Spalding, Cassandra Wilson, Lalah Hathaway and Sheila E.

The Minnesota native also confirmed that he and the New Power Generation would also perform nightly alongside featured acts.

"If you've been to one of my shows, then you know what time it is," the usually media shy artist joked. "You need to come early and come often because every time we play it's always something new. I got a lot of hits. Bring friends, bring children, and bring foot spray because it's gonna be funky."

"I didn't want to talk too much but how many have seen 'Waiting for Superman,' " he asked before bringing out Harlem Children's Zone head Geoffrey Canada who also spoke briefly about how grateful he is Prince chose Harlem as the venue to announce the series.

Prince will play a special guitar for the duration of the concert series and then auction off the guitar for the benefit of Harlem Children's Zone.

BET's President of Music Programming Stephen Hill, a long-time fan of 'The Purple One,' introduced Prince to the throngs of media outlets present at the press conference. A few months back, the network awarded Prince with a Lifetime Achievement award at the 2010 BET Awards.

Hill reminisced on his first Prince concert in 1982 at the Apollo and more recently flying to Nice, France to see his two-hour set and another two-hour long after-hours set. "I know what I hope he's here to announce," but admitted he was out of the loop on what the big announcement was.

At the press conference, Prince also debuted the full version of his new song 'Rich Friends.'

Earlier this year, he released his album '20Ten' in newspapers across Europe and in the UK, but refused to allow access to the album to digital download services.

I think he looks great!

For some reason I was starting to think he really did look like his photoshoped alter ego that I have seen everywhere. I am relieved that he really doesn't look like the pristine Photoshop princess on the last crop of magazine photos.

He looks quite good. Even more so considering his age.

But I agree about the shirt, there is an old lady driving around Rodeo Drive looking for that blouse.

yeah that means that he won't do anything new it will be the same old set of songs he's been doing since the musicology tour ...BORING!!

and either stephen hill or the writer of this article needs 2 get their facts straight ..prince never played the apollo in 1982 ..he did it in 1993!!

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Yes, Prince was cool. He really has a vested interest in the Harlem Children's Zone project. It was nice to hear him mention and give props to his favorite artists as well, and the exciting news that the "Welcome2America" tour will kick off in December.. It will be interesting to see what December will bring. They played the 20Ten album while we were waiting for Prince to come on stage. Unfortunately he did not play, as we heard rumors when we were there that he was, but apparently that was misinformation. I was sitting behind purplecam, portia and another orger I believe whose username on the npgmc site ws "imblessed"(?).

Amen!! I am certainly willing to give this some more time to roll and and be clear but wow, who gives a shit about seeing any of these acts when the man has not done a US tour since 2004. You all know what it is like when he is trying to pump up some act while at a concert, he goes way out of his way to give them the stage and acts like we should be privledges to witness the great Q Tip, The Steeles, Mavis Staples and now those chicks from the BET awards. Well again, I hope I can eat my words and this is something more along the lines of a real Prince show with maybe one of them opening each night in a different city but if he is really doing this kind of full showcase then maybe it is something that will just be featured in NYC and if so, please enjoy.

So glad you got to be there in person and thanks for the info, 2elijah! Did you get the impression that this was only a brief residency in NYC or the kick-off to a larger U.S. tour? Because it doesn't make sense that Prince would use Live Nation for a local residency in NYC...

For everyone who isn't excited and feels this won't be worth the money. Stay home! It's very simple to do and costs you nothing.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

According to my friend Cam(fellow orger purplecam) Prince will be performing some shows in December to benefit the Harlem's Children Empowerment Zone. if that is true, I haven othing but respect for him for doing that. it is an amazing cause.

Yes, this seems true. The CEO of the Children's Empowerment Zone was there and the BET guy announced that at the very end.

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

It all about not giving you whatt you want, but giving you what you need. These are great "artists" that deserve some recognition. You should give them a shot. IMO, they have released much better martial than Prince has released in the past 10 yrs.
