I love NEWS too. Especially 'South'. I have a buddy who only likes Prince's jazz/fusion jams like NEWS and Xpectation. "Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion" -- Martha Graham

wth ? Musicology ? | |

I love the concept about the art of making music, the craftmanship, the arrangements. It's full of strong songs, in my opinion.

This list could change at any point and each of these albums are here for different reasons. Some I enjoy from beginning to end ( , Parade ), some I rarely listen to all the way through but still contain enough great tracks that I enjoy individually that the whole album somehow manages to make it here (Emancipation, GB, Rave).

Putting these in order is difficult. I know all 7 of the top 7 are definitely there....just might shift from time to time in actual position. The bottom three I had a great deal of difficulty picking. I kept feeling I was neglecting something...

it has a few strongs songs indeed but overall i thought it was quite bland , plastic and unispired sounding i much more prefer 3121
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
In my opinion 3121 is almost just as strong, song-wise, but then again I thought that album sounded rather plastic in comparison to Musicology.

As a fan since 1981, I'm bit surprised that Lovesexy is so high on so many people's lists. I'm also surprised that Purple Rain isn't number one on most people's lists since it's a complete masterpiece and in a league of its own, in my opnion.

Well, todays choice in chronological order:

So to this day, we have:
THE TOP-TEN:
1) Sign "O" The Times (52) 2) 1999 (51) 3) Purple Rain (49) 4) Parade (45) 5) The Gold Experience (41) 7) Lovesexy (35) 9) Around The World In A Day (30) 10) Emancipation (23)
Predictably, Sign "O" The Times is #1 and the Top-Ten is highly dominated by the 80's albums, with Sign "O" The Times, 1999, Purple Rain and Parade apparently being the all-times favorites. Only two 90's albums were able to make it: Emancipation (which is the least "the album Prince was born to record" could expect) and The Gold Experience. This last one's success is no surprise, but what is is that its "brother-album" Come is so far behind. Also, it's quite eccentric that an album that received such a confidential release ended being #5. No 2000's album made the top-10. I have to admit that i'm a bit surprised to see Controversy and Dirty Mind being so popular because they're "pre-stardom", but still they got many votes.
***
THE NEXT 10: 11) 3121 (21) 12) The Black Album (18) 14) The Rainbow Children (15) 15) Musicology (12) 16) 20Ten (13) 17) For You (10) and Prince (10) 18) Diamonds And Pearls (9)
A mix of albums from every decade. I suspect that the presence of five 2000's albums (out of 11) in the Top-20 is partly due to the "recent" factor: we listened to these albums more often than the old ones these last years, so it's logical that we'd elect them amongst our favorites, but we'd have to see how they'd "chart" in ten or twenty years. It is to be noted that none of the 70's and 80's albums failed to make the top-20. I'm also surprised to see that For You and Prince are more popular than Batman, Graffiti Bridge, Come, Diamonds And Pearls and Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic.
***
THE UNPOPULAR ONES:
21) Graffiti Bridge (5) 22) Crystal Ball (4), The Truth (4), One Nite Alone... (4) and N.E.W.S. (4) 23) Jill Jones (3), The Vault... Old friends 4 Sale (3) and Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic (3)
Though i'm not surprised to see that the "jazz" albums had very few votes, i think it's a pity and that it shows how mainstream-oriented we are despite Prince's foundness for experimentation. Quite unpopular amongst the "regular" albums are Crystal Ball, which also came as a surprise to me, and Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic, The Truth, The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale, Chaos & Disorder, One Nite Alone... and Planet Earth. Except for Rave and Planet, the others were kind of concept albums, which tends to prove that we are more sensitive to mainstream pop efforts than to experiments. A few live/video albums and a few side-projects made the list but i think that there'd have been more if people had been told that they could/should include them in their votes.
***
THE BANISHED ONES: It is to be noted that each and every "Prince" studio album received at least one vote except for the 2nd disc of Ultimate, The Slaughterhouse, The Chocolate Invasion and Mplsound (even though some people might have included it and Elixer in their vote when they voted for Lotuslow3r). I'm really surprised to see the lack of interest for The Chocolate Invasion and The Slaughterhouse (both albums that actually almost made my own top-10) because they're not better or worse than many other electrofunk/synthpop albums, but maybe the fact that they were digital-only releases or that they were compilations of previously released material had people forget about their existence. I gave one vote to The B-Sides since someone said "all the b-sides" as if it was one album, but no one formally voted for it either. Most of the side-projects and live/video albums were excluded but as i already said, it's mostly more due to the fact that people thought that they couldn't/shouldn't vote for them than because there are much less popular that the elected albums. Neverthless, i'm surprised that neither Gold Nigga nor Exodus had a single vote.
Well, here we are.
Of course, you can keep voting and we'll see if the results evolve (i'll update the final count if needed) [Edited 10/13/10 14:58pm] A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Cheers, databank!
Although we should consider how many albums were at no.1 and so on, because no.1 should count more than the other 9 top ten inclusions... but it would be very difficult mathematically to do that.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Probably not difficult but it would be tedious... anything in the #1 spot gets 10 points, etc, the #10 album gets 1 point...

Well, that would be the easiest way, but I think it should be graded more. No.1 should get twice as much as no.2 and the top three should get more than the rest and so on...
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Hmm, but why? What would that achieve statistically?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
It's simply another interpretation of the material we have. You see, I think people hardly ever change their no.1 album, whereas the rest, especially 4-10 might change drastically (that's the impression I got). A favourite album is an absolute number one and should not be cancelled by another album in second and tenth place.
Anyway, I think we'd have a very good impression of the results by just looking at each others posts and the interpretation can be something individual afterwards.
