Enough of the "hits"?

Have you have enough, like me, of P`s playlist with old "hits" at every show?

Forget it. No artist of Prince's stature is going to have any kind of successful tour without playing some of his biggest hits.

Not enough hardcore fans to support concerts performing just songs from 20ten, Musicology, and Newpower Soul.

I wish he'd cycle in some different hits. He's got plenty to choose from, and he ignores quite a few.

It depends on the size of the show/tour. If Prince is playing small venues/theaters he can go without playing mostly "the hits". However, if he is playing arenas and festivals...he has to play the hits mixed with a few other songs. There are too many casual fans not to.

I think the hits are sort of obligatory, but I do wish he's do a more random selection of them. I'd love the here "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World", "The Morning Papers", "Thieves in the Temple" more often or from time to time.

Moreso than the hits, I'd like to see him do a lot more new stuff post 2000 and unreleased material. And I REALLy would like to see him stop doing Larry Graham and Sly songs--nobody wants to hear those.

Prince maintains an opulent lifestyle beyond the imagination of most folk - and disgustingly wasteful and egomanical to most of those who can. Believe it or not, his royalties only just cover the running of Paisley Park and a few sandwiches. Everything else requires a steady cash flow of millions of dollars - hense one-off shows for Arabian Kings, 77dollar websites, the gayest pillows ever and continual jumping into bed with loathsome capitalist pigs. Like most people, his principles are set at a price. Concert promotoers will only pay in advance if Prince signs a contract to play a certain amount of 'hits' per show - this wee hinderance making a mockery of the 'Prince is dead' stance of 1995 during his brief Japanese tour. Vicky Waiting still counts, Prince. Also highlighting his laughable hypocracy when it comes to 'con'tracts. he signs em all the time. And even when he changed his name, he signed 'Prince Nelson'. It's all showbiz and misdirection. Thanks Christ he's a musical genius or else he'd be quite a loathsome cunt.

Anyway, if I wwent to see a megastar at a large stadium event whom Im not overly familiar with but have knowledge of a few of their more popular songs - say Bon Jovi (which would be a purely ironic choice of entertainment but i digress) -and he didn't play either Livin On A Prayer or Keep the faith, instead gurning through a few acoustic b-sides from their first record for the diehards, I'd be furious enough to shoot the cunt.

Man, you should have seen the pillows he was trying to flog at the O2 shows. It was him naked and doe-eyed, caressing his own cheek. im sure someone will have a pic. Selling for something like £30 each. Extortionate, I could only afford three.

You could only get away will selling gay shit like that in the UK.

Prince would have certainly kick started the Tea Party movement well before Barack Obama became president, if he had pulled that shit in the states.

It's an odd situation really - A Prince gig used to be current tracks with a few modem classics and a few crowd pleasing old classic (most non-Prince gigs I've been to are usually the same format too). Certainly since the ONA tour it's been all great hits with maybe 1 or 2 newish songs.

I think it's mainly because a large section if his catalogue hasn been open omthe masses and, some of is too experimental and he doesn't have the tracks to please the crowd in the albums of recent years...there are a few exceptions but even around the gold expeience tour he was pulling out random album tracks and rocking the sets. I think he's limited himself to a certain selection through self censorship and refection. Also his promtionsl tours don't promote hey just earn money via path of least resistance - ONAnPlayed 1 song of that album, the 2 planet earth shows I saw had 4 tracks.
Ask yourself when was he last time you though ..."oh my god he's playing...."

Mine was 2002, I Love U In Me...since then it's been text book/paint by numbers concert

Well, untill last week I would have said " yes I've heard these songs too many times''. that was, listening to Musicology and 2007 London shows, only playing snippets of too many hits.

After last week however I don't mind him doing it, playing the old hits in full versions and up-to-date arrangements, making them essentially new performances, most of which were very good (anyone heard or seen Purple Rain from Vienna of Forever in my Life from werchter???)

P is so far ahead of his time that if he was just totally wide open with it about 16 people would get it and everybody else would be mad. The new arrangements are just enough for most folx ears and he still does an album a week and sprinkles tidbits into shows. His organization is very smart .Its hard to keep up with his output.

As long as those hits have helped make him a legend, I don't think he'll stop performing them in any way he wants to. So no I doubt it'll stop. Besides there's a lot of casual fans who love to hear them.

Yesterday me & the family went to an amusement park bout 2 hours away & i figured All Day, All Night, All Week was perfect the 4 hours of travel. The setlist was was untouchable along with the arrangements & it made the hits sound sound very fresh & left me wanting more!

Yes, that's just it. I don't think if there's ANY established artist that can abandon hits in this time and age. They are famous for a certain amount of songs and the public will always demand them to be performed. Performing for a very small amount of people like his aftershows is a different story, but not arenas or stadium venues...

As for cycling his hits, not sure about that, other than WDC and TMBGITW, he usually performs the "big" songs that are still remembered. Songs like "Thieves In The Temple" or "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man" hit the top 10 but it's not like the casual fan would go crazy for them like they do for "Kiss" or "Little Red Corvette".

Even Madonna had to put a few classics back in her set list because fans were complaining about not enough hits on it. So no one's immune to it. Not Prince, not Madonna, no one.

Exactly: NO established popular artist can get away completely from "the hits". You think people would be happy to see U2 without Joshua Tree or Actung Baby material?

Another thing that I have said before:

What constitutes a "hit" song when it comes to Prince?

Example: "She's Always in My hair" is a fan favorite/beloved song, but technically not a "hit" and not hugely known to the general public.

"New Power slide...."

I don't mind the hits really but I would love for him to stop playin the same hits/songs every show..I would like for him to change it up..Play the other songs on the album..Instead of playin 1999 and LRC all the time, why not play Somethin in the Water and International Lover (its not too dirty of a song lyrically for him to sing one or two verses).

Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

Agreed

And I agree 2

He could even do instrumentals of songs he feels uncomfortable with the lyrics now.

He did play an instrumental version of Erotic City at to the LotusFlow3r.com website party

The last time would be Montreux 2009:

When I lay my hands on u
Little red corvette
Somewhere here on earth
When the lights go down
Willing and able
I love u but I don't trust u anymore
She spoke 2 me
Love like jazz
All this love

1st encore:
Empty room
Elixer
In a large room with no light

2nd encore:
Insatiable
Scandalous
The Beautiful Ones
Nothing Compares 2 U

SOME. Prince is playing the same damn hits. And the same damn covers.

Nobody's asking for JUST. He's playing NONE of them.

Oh please. Madonna's latest shows have been about her LATEST albums and featured 80% NEW/RECENT music. Prince plays the hits and the same goddamn covers he's been playing for 10+ years and maybe one or two recent song. Madonna's the OPPOSITE of Prince.

So ask yourself this question: if Madonna's audience can tolerate a set heavy on recent songs, how come Prince's can't? Also: how can a recent song become a classic when PRINCE DOES NOT PLAY IT?
