Erotic was a flop? I wouldn't say it was a flop, that whole period actually made her even more relevant I think. But I agree in comparison to some of her others it could be considered a flop

2 Me that whole period was wild and in your face the Sex book the album and the Girlie Show, which is still my top 2 favorites

Erotica wasn't a flop. It sold quite well, just not as much as her past releases. So they called it a flop.neutral

Just a tidbit: I was at Glam Slam Minneapolis one night around the time of this release and Prince and Carmen Electra danced together to the remix of Erotica.

nice

I could see the Black album being similar to what Madonna did with the Erotic era. Prince could have been so 'underground' with that album

I read that she planned on making Bad Girls video almost x rated. Not too far from Erotic or Justify My Love videos

Oh please. Madonna's latest shows have been about her LATEST albums and featured 80% NEW/RECENT music. Prince plays the hits and the same goddamn covers he's been playing for 10+ years and maybe one or two recent song. Madonna's the OPPOSITE of Prince.

So ask yourself this question: if Madonna's audience can tolerate a set heavy on recent songs, how come Prince's can't? Also: how can a recent song become a classic when PRINCE DOES NOT PLAY IT?

I'll take on "Bart" with a simple explanation.

Madonna plays more of her current music because in reality her old music is absolutely terrible. Prince's old music consists many true classics. Madonna's old music is embarrassing to listen to and probably even more embarrassing for her to sing today.

I don't get it ... you guys keep going on about Madonna not playing that many of her hits, and mostly songs from the new album.

On year ago at Werchter - this is the setlist:

Candy shop > single released from her last album
Beat goes on
Human nature
Vogue
Die another day

Into the groove
Michael Jackson interlude (remix Billie Jean & Wanna be starting something)
Holiday
Dress you up
She's not me > single released from her last album
Music
Rain

Devil wouldn't recognize you
Spanish lesson
Miles away
La isla Bonita
Doli doli
You must love me
Get stupid
4 minutes
Like a prayer
Frozen
Ray of light

Edit: sorry - didn't see this was already posted before

Even Madonna had to put a few classics back in her set list because fans were complaining about not enough hits on it. So no one's immune to it. Not Prince, not Madonna, no one.

It sold half of what LAP did in the US and UK and almost only 1/3 of LAP worldwide, it didn't yield any #1 hits, she missed the US top 20 for the first time with one of its singles, the title track was dropped like it was hot by radio. Plus she barely toured US and Europe with TGS. The general public got tired of Madonna and while she did rebound with a lot of ballads in the 90s and then the dance stuff, it was never the same again as the 80s. It made her less relevant and she was never the biggest female in pop (not counting tours of course) anymore.
