It's cool to know that this is Prince and the Band's favorite track as well. Also interesting that this song was a demo he recorded "years ago." I wonder when...Emancipation era?

Yea, layered vocals. Why the fuck did it take so long? This is what makes Prince Prince.
My only gripe is that he didn't use strings. You know how I love me some strings. Or maybe you don't. lol
This is the best song on the album, Act of God being the second best. All you others say Hell Yea!! |

Gotta jump on the bandwagon and say that I absolutely love this song! Love the melody, Prince's deep singing voice, and the "Ooh We Ooooh Ooooh...Sha la la la la...This the future soul song" chorus. In fact, I woke up with the chorus to this song going through my head, and had to stop for a second to think of which song it was. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you. |

No over analyzing here, or trying to figure out what it sounds like from the past. Just an awesome tune. |

I'm thinking that it's probably from the rainbow children era..Someone suggested it was maybe from the emacipation era, but seeing that it's about his views on "the new world" and its his more spiritual self composing, I think rainbow children sounds more logical. What is your main problem?

Hmm, I'm not getting a TRC vibe from this one. Prince has been writing with a spiritual POV for decades. This could be from 3121 as easily as Emancipation or anywhere in between (or earlier) really. |

The Saddam reference is a dead giveaway as to the mustiness of this thing. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves. |

The point I'm trying to make is that it cannot be from the 90's since it expresses his JW views, and he wasn't even studying the bible during Emancipation..or at least not like he is now. What is your main problem?

I think this was truly left off "Musicology". I think FSS was left off "3121" for some reason. So was "Sticky Like Glue"... |

This is, hands down, the most sensual gospel song Prince has ever done.
I did a deeper dive on it last night - and it's really about the peace and freedom you feel when you reach that ultimate moment of love, acceptance and submission to a power higher than yourself. It's about Prince finding that - it's why he can fly for the first time in his dreams - and fantasizing that the whole world has found it, too - when everyone is singing the same song.
I was thinking the same thing..and when this comes along:
I hear a sigh
I hear a whisper
But I don't care
This is between me and my Lord
I just started smiling..It was just uplifting to hear for some reason.
yeah
pls see my last post... what is he saying after
This is between me and my Lord
?? |

I was wondering the exact same thing..seems like its some where along the lines of:
I'll prove it to you right on heaven's stairs
But that's just my best guess What is your main problem?

Yea, I wasn't really going by the lyrics when I guessed it was from the Emancipation era. More the structure and sound I guess. Shades of "Goodbye," maybe. |

Could be Musicology era since that wasn't long after the US invaded Iraq. I don't think it could've been from the other time this country went to war with the Middle East. '91 seems too musty for this track. |

Ummm, what about this track is pointing specifically to JW views? I'm not a Christian or a JW and don't detect much of anything specific here.
If I were going to guess any album limited to the last 10 years, I would place this around 3121.

Let's not forget the apparent "mustiness" of the moon landing reference on SOTT, among others examples. Sometimes, Prince does not keep up with current events. |

Wrong. There is no reference to the moon landing in Sign O the Times.
Silly, no
When a rocket ship explodes
And everybody still wants to fly
is a reference to the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger - which happened in January of 1986.
Nice try. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves. |

You are SO wrong that you could not be more wrong. You could try but you would not succeed.
"Sister killed her baby cuz she couldn't afford 2 feed it And we're sending people 2 the moon"
I was not referring to the shuttle disaster.
Nice try.

[Edited 7/10/10 15:44pm] "Sending people to the moon" is a metaphor for wasteful government spending. It also rhymes with "Now he's doing horse. It's June," which is the last phrase in the next rhyming couplet. I rather doubt Prince was referring to an actual moon mission. The last occurred before his music career even started. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves. |

It's a musty outdated reference, plain and simple. You can send all day on speculation and conjecture over his reason for using it but it has little more justification for its existance compared to the mention of Saddam in Act Of God or the wall of berlin in 3121. |
