MJ on Prince in the new issue of VIBE.

He talks of attending one the Vegas shows and inviting Prnce to breakfast after the show.

"We've always been compared to each other ,but we are so different,"Michael said of the Pruple One,who had made a point to show off for Will and Jackson, jamming in front of the with his base guitar."he was always viewed as a songwriter and i was always an entertainerBut they've never really acknowlegded that I write.I wrote "billie jean""beat it","man in the mirror","we are the world"...big songs.I have so much love for Prince. But why don't they look at me that way"

how cool is that o hear he respects prince like that.

That's very, very impressive right there. To see one genius acknowledge another is classy.

RIP Mike.

I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Seems like kind of a back-handed compliment, at best.

Michael wasn't a composer, though. He was a lyricist. That's why they see Prince different. He performs and writes everything he puts down on record other than horns and even then he can emulate that sound on the keys.

Prince has. You just have'nt been listening.

Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

MJ didn't write "Man In The Mirror", so I don't know how accurate that quote is. confuse

He wasn't an instrumentalist like Prince, but he could beatbox every element of the music, and would dictate sounds to musicians who would transcribe to musical notation for him, so I would consider him a composer. Many of his best songs and/or biggest hits were written by him alone.

Right - Prince demads respect. MJ having some appreciation for him is not special or surprising. He had to know that he wasnt the songwriter, musician or producer that Prince is - and that is why he was never acknowledged (by people with a true appreciation and knowledge) as Prince was in those areas.

Michael did not write 'Man in the Mirror' i doubt he would have forgotten this. That immediately casts doubt on the quote, though it was attributed to a third party (Akon or Will.i.am).

Though he was a great songwriter and yes, spinlight, like it or not he was a composer of music, he's explained in great depth and demonstrated how he comes up with his melodies (search mexico deposition on youtube) many times. so don't try pulling that one.

Michael had an amazing talent for making the noises of different instruments with his vocal chords alone. Lest we not forget he was a percussionist of some sort, allegedly played keys, whether he was all that good or just fucked about at it really isn't the issue, he certainly did enough.

Shake You Body

Heartbreak Hotel

Don't Stop Til You Get Enough

Rock With You

Workin' Day & Night

Billie Jean

Beat It

Dirty Diana

Give In To Me

Who Is It

Stranger In Moscow

Just a few he wrote AND composed. All A+

Nice to see he mentioned Prince though they played a different game. Prince had one year of being Michael-like in popularity and sales, i don't think Prince liked that too much and steered away from it with ATWIAD, and great props to him for being brave/clever enough to do that.

He never publically voiced respect for his parents when they died, or James Brown, or Rick James. Apart from covering him, i could never see him saying anything publically. Don't forget Michael was a dis-fellowshipped JW too, so that may have some bearing.

One of your peers, the same age as you, dying must have an effect on a person. Perhaps Prince was shocked, something like that must hit home and bring things into perspective. But yeah, it's more than likely Prince just being an ass. He mentioned MJ indirectly loads of times on record. It smacked of classless jealousy and stupidity sometimes.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt though.

I have honestly never understood why MJ was never seen as a songwriter or composer. I am an absolutely massive MJ fan and really his biggest hits and best songs are written by him himself.

eg. Don't Stop Til You Get Enough, Workin Day and Night, Billie Jean, Beat It, Wanna Be Startin Somethin, almost the whole "Bad" Album, Black or White, Who Is It, Heal The World, Earth Song, Stranger in Moscow, most of the rest of the "HIStory" album, Speechless etc etc

actually i believe MJ was a better lyricist than Prince but thats just my opinion smile

also people say he wasn't a real composer as he didn't play the instruments on songs but he would SING every note of every chord to an orchestra for a full song. He would put everything he could hear in his head down on tape and he could also beatbox better than many people i have seen and actually he could play many instruments like guitar, piano, percussion but just didn't in the studio i guess smile he has said that when people like slash came in to record with him, he would just leave him with the music and not try to guide him as he had to much respect for his abilities to try and change his playing smile

however i do have alot of respect for Prince and am glad there was a real mutual respect between the two smile

Nicely put, but i'm an MJ fan who doesn't believe for a moment he could play a lick on guitar or keys, mainly cause nobody ever saw him do it, i don't care what liner notes say. They were his liner notes after all.

I'm fairly positive he was a percussionist of some sort. The man had rythym for sure. But give me a biscuit tin and two pencils and i'm a percussionist.

Singer, dancer, writer, composer. Not too shabby. I'm happy with that.

Actually, that is not true. Michael wrote and composed every song in his catalog with the credits: "Written and composed by Michael Jackson."

Michael's style of composition was just different. Michael would think or dream of the songs/melodies (just like Prince), then simulate instrumentation with his mouth, a la precisely impersonating the instruments he wanted to use, and expert beat boxing. He would record all of his own vocalized "instruments" together on a home tape recorder (often with a backing electronic drum machine he would set for his ideas), then his studio band would replicate them exactly how MJ wanted the instrumentation to sound, while he'd add percussion sounds for each of his creations. Michael also designed how his lyrics would be sung and harmonized for his compositions (again, just like Prince). Therefore, Michael was a composer of songs/music too.

MJ's question is valid, and is one I've asked myself.

Much love and respect to Michael Jackson.

I learned this back in 1983 (83 not 84) that to compare the two was useless.

Just enjoy the music.

Anyone remember Beat It and Little Red Corvette battling on the charts in 1983?

Bad and U Got The Look battling in 1987?

Actually, the mistake was on Will.i.am's part when he mentioned "Man In The Mirror"..He was rthe one that had the convo with Mike....It was also a mistake on the books part for slipping up on that part of the quote (it happens sometimes when it comes to researching...We are not robots...)..But I can assure you the story and quote are legit....

And trust me, it doesn't make MJ look any less greater...It came from a very human place....

I can't quote him, you'll have to find it. In an interview after a paris show/tv show was taped, a reporter asked about Micheal after the Trial. Prince said something very profound. Something like, Everyone has to come home. (maybe someone can help with that quote) And yes i know Michael hadnt passed away at that point. But Prince Respected Michael all along. So why is it necessary for you to hear that Prince Respects Michael after his death?

Nevermind. Only you can answer that one.

Peace.

Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.
