Point me in the direction of his voicing respect for MJ after he died. Thanks.

Some of you guys really need to get off of this "Prince hasn't shown MJ any respect in death" bit. He HAS! What does he need to do for some of you? Get on TV and cry, release a "statement," dedicate an album to him? Goodness. He played MJ's music after he died, and when I was at the PP show in October, he stated many of his influences. One of the last ones he stated was the Jacksons and said if it wasn't for those people who came before him, he would not be here. He then went on to play some Jackson's tunes. He has played MJ on various occaisons. If he did not respect him, would he take the time to learn and play his music? People have pitted these two against eachother since the 1980s, yet Prince plays the music of his so-called rival. If that is not a PUBLIC show of respect, I do not know what is.

Some of you act like P is hatin' on MJ, and he is not. Just because he has not expressed himself in the way you might want him to doesn't mean he hasn't. There are none so blind as those who refuse to see - or as deaf as those who refuse to listen. rolleyes

"Beat it, beat it, no one wants to be defeated. Show em how funky and strong is your fight, it doesnt matter who's wrong or right."

Cheesier than almost anything Prince ever wrote.

As for the diss on "My Name Is Prince", sorry but to me it's justified.

Why was Michael the King of Pop? Because Prince was Prince or His Royal Badness and Elizabeth Taylor couldnt stand it. She named him the King of Pop and everyone else ran with it. Probably had something to do with Prince's visit to Liz's house where she was quoted as saying something to the effect of Prince having more security then the president. She didnt like that.

Sorry...dont want to turn this to a Prince vs MJ thing, but to me there's no contest when it comes to the creative process.

You know why you didnt get that respect Mike? Because Prince's albums (in the 80s) had an artistic quality while your albums were made for the jukebox, every track designed to be #1 with a bullet. You saved your artistic merit for your videos and concerts where you performed the exact same dances we saw in the videos over and over and over and over...No new arrangements, etc.

Again...sorry but I grew up in a household where my parents, two brothers and sister all swore by MJ and hated Prince. Not to mention the fact that IMHO Mike wanted to be Prince...he didnt want to be America's apple pie anymore and couldnt understand how Mr. Raunchy Prince was respected.

Take the Bad album and Parade album and place them side by side. Tell me what you see.

I have honestly never understood why MJ was never seen as a songwriter or composer. I am an absolutely massive MJ fan and really his biggest hits and best songs are written by him himself.

eg. Don't Stop Til You Get Enough, Workin Day and Night, Billie Jean, Beat It, Wanna Be Startin Somethin, almost the whole "Bad" Album, Black or White, Who Is It, Heal The World, Earth Song, Stranger in Moscow, most of the rest of the "HIStory" album, Speechless etc etc

actually i believe MJ was a better lyricist than Prince but thats just my opinion smile

also people say he wasn't a real composer as he didn't play the instruments on songs but he would SING every note of every chord to an orchestra for a full song. He would put everything he could hear in his head down on tape and he could also beatbox better than many people i have seen and actually he could play many instruments like guitar, piano, percussion but just didn't in the studio i guess smile he has said that when people like slash came in to record with him, he would just leave him with the music and not try to guide him as he had to much respect for his abilities to try and change his playing smile

however i do have alot of respect for Prince and am glad there was a real mutual respect between the two smile

[Edited 7/2/10 13:20pm]

I still do not have proof that Prince mutually respected Michael. No one has not one documented article, or interview where Prince said that he respected MJ as an artist.

I agree wholeheartedly that MJ was a much better vocalist than Prince. Just check out some of Michael's childhood ballads, as well as his more contemporary work. Personally I think those nose surgeries fugged with Michael's voice...but the brother could defintely get down on a microphone.

Prince's voice has grown significantly since Purple Rain. I think Prince has demonstrated a little more versatility vocally recently. But MJ still trumps Prince vocally, as far as I'm concerned. Prince's falsetto voce is what "tricks" folks into thinking that he's all that. But when you listen to his full voice (particullary in the past) it was not all of that.

Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

Please do not ever use that clip to support your arguement again. First of all, the chord playing starts before Michael even sits down at the piano. In addition you never see his fingers play the keys. And even if you did see his fingers play the keys, he was playing basic chords. If I gave YOU the chords to "I'll be there" and you could identify the keys...you could play them as well. eek

Wasted my damned time looking at that Youtube clip. mad

One of your peers, the same age as you, dying must have an effect on a person. Perhaps Prince was shocked, something like that must hit home and bring things into perspective. But yeah, it's more than likely Prince just being an ass. He mentioned MJ indirectly loads of times on record. It smacked of classless jealousy and stupidity sometimes.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt though.

"more than likely Prince just being an ass."

You have no basis for making that statement concerning MJ. We have no record of Prince saying anything bad about Mike on the public record. If he wanted to dis him he could have he did not.

Shit he never said anything bad about Rick James and he was always ragging on P in the media so why would he have a beef with Mike.

Cause that cocaine was a helluva drug, and Prince probably didn't wanna catch a beat down. So instead "he chilled", and didn't say anything.

I don't know what exactly you are looking for. However, have you read this Vibe.com article from a fellow orger? It gives some more background into past Prince/MJ interactions. As I said in my previous post, Prince PLAYED MJ'S MUSIC AT HIS OWN CONCERT. Is that not an indication of respect for another artist's artistry - learning and playing their music?

With regard to vocal ability, it's all relative with regard to whose voice you prefer. I agree that Prince has grown vocally over the years. However, to me, Prince's vocal ability was very evident as far back as the title track of his first album.

I never saw it that way. It was more like a Magic/Bird kinda thing, Where you know the two of you are responsible for exemplifying the very best of what your generation has to offer in a field you care deeply about, and you need the other guy to egg you on to make you better. That's the beauty of true pure competition, in the end everybody wins.

Thus, if you see that other guy screwing up or falling off, you call him on it to get him back on point and in the game to resume the "fight". What's the use in competing against yourself?

Rick James served the same purpose in the early days.

That's funny because Rick James loathed Prince. confuse AND Rick demonstrated his disdain publicly, lol. lol He was NOT kind and complimentary when speaking about Prince like MJ was. Did Prince say that and perform Rick's song in a derisive manner, or was he sincere? If the latter, then that's shocking. More shocking than him not speaking about James Brown's death.

BECAUSE THE DUDE DIED, no matter what he felt about rick or vice versa no matter what was said theres respecting someone personally, or respecting someones music or both. Why can't some people see sincerity or are paranoid when they need not be lol. He obviously played a few notes of the song to the guy that allowed him to open his show starting out even if it was benefiting both sides. No matter what happened during or afterwards; Prince is actually a goodhearted person and Rick James was to, thats a "guess" is an opinion im sticking to.

wink

So did James Brown. You didn't understand my point....Like others have said, Prince is the type who never speaks directly about any of his "loved ones'" deaths, which is fine, whatever, but he could say "RIP Rick James?" That doesn't make any sense. Unless he was being sarcastic, it's backwards for him to acknowledge the death of one who despised him (Rick James) but not a legend he looked up to (James Brown), in my opinion. That's what I was getting at.

I have a boot from one of the Atlanta stops on the Musicology tour, and during that show he said something like "rest in peace, Rick James" and then played "Give It To Me Baby", with no sarcasm. I don't have the boot on my computer right now, though, so I can't get the exact quote.

When James Brown died, he shut down 3121.com for a couple days, with just a black screen with the words "in restful peace, James Brown". I also heard he had JB videos playing before his shows at 3121 Las Vegas. So he did acknowledge his death.

Prince was the male "family" name.

In traditional African American culture we did not have a "family name" so in order to keep up with what family you belonged to babies were given names of their grandparents and other special kinsmen.

I was the last male in our family so I got my grandfather's middle name.

My sister was awarded the female family name.

The name Prince also was very common back in the day.

I'll tell you what I'm not looking for. I'm not looking to "assume" anything in that regard. From what I read...Prince played "Don't stop till you get enough" after Jackson died! And when asked if he was giving tribute to Michael...he said NO! He said that his bandmate has the same timbre as Michael so he decided to play that cut. So again, I can't assume anything. And as far as "learning" the song....I doubt Prince had to do that much learning I'm sure he probably kicked the shyd out of it the first go round. He's just that talented. Besides, it was a big big hit, sure he knew it by heart.

Good analyogy. Eventhough no one here ever proved Prince's admiration for Michael, I would like to think that at some point Prince had to be rooting for him. Michael got his azz kicked around so much by the tabloids and mainstream media, I hope that Prince could identify and "had his back" at least mentally.

What's been cocky and Prince interviews and songs got to do with MJ constant fixation with Prince? I don't get what your saying, but sounds like you are a bitter MJ fan.

By the way, What's is an act? They never acted like they were enemies, in fact Prince hardly talk about MJ, may be the whole Jackson clan was infatuated with Prince, but the few times I saw P talking about MJ, he was very polite, even the Chris Rock interview Prince manage to make that crazy MJ incident (the Bad video idea) into a funny story.

I was there in the 80s, there was much more to every side of the coin, I mean MJ and Prince weren't the only great artists of the 80s, sure they were some of the most popular but atleast, there were better musicians then MJ for sure. Prince was hard to touch.

MJ acknowledges Prince and he are so different. They should not be compared.

MJ and Prince had breakfast. That should tells us their relationship was at least cordial.

Prince doesn't need to pay tribute to MJ, though I feel he may of in his own way. Prince never paid particular tribute to James Brown, but Brown influenced him way more than MJ.

Beatboxing an outline of what you want a musician to lay down is not the same as writing music or playing it yourself.

Beatboxing and drumming is not the same. True!

Humming and bassplaying is not the same. True!

Singing and playing melodic instruments is not the same. True!

Being michael is not the same as being Prince. True!

But thank god or anyone that is to be thanked for the fact that some of the best music was composed that way. If it wasn't for Michaels unbelievable talent for singing and structuring rythms and melody on top of each other, we wouldn't have those classics. They are two amazing geniouses perfecting different aspects of music and entertainment.

2 Whoever It May Concern

My Name Is Prince

The Good Life (Big City Remix)

Fascination

Life Of The Party.

There's four examples of Prince being an ass when it comes to MJ just for starters.

Not to mention dissing the Jacksons on the SOTT tour rehearsals, Laura, with all due respect, i know my stuff being a fan of both.

I'd say that "Life Of The Party" is the only one that can be argued as being remotely pointed @ jacko.

The others are simply plays on his own name. Prince/King.

"The Good Life" takes a stab @ Tito (if you can call it a stab), not Michael.

(D')

The entire reason Prince used the "There are no kings on this earth, only Princes" is a DIRECT reaction to MJ's moniker of being "the King of Pop"! You must realise this, surely?!

And let's also take Fascination, which you claim is not even "remotely pointed @ jacko"

"The most vital thing in pop (MJ had also been recently declared as "the most vital thing in pop")

is the epitome of doom,

You wake up in a cold sweat

Cos one of em's in your room

Singing from the telly

Making more bucks than sense (one of the jacksons is always to be found on TV, making $)

So called King (cannot be anything other than Jackson - so-called King!)

Gives birth to so-called Prince (referring to the recent birth of Jackson's song).

If you really can't fathom from all of this that these things are about MJ then you need to brush up a little on those comprehension skills!

...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...
