Alright....took me a long time, but I have finally written my opinion of Grafitti Bridge....

O......M........G.........
Well, people....for the first time in a loooong time...I'm struck speechless. By popular demand, I finally got around to watching Prince's Graffiti Bridge. If this is the "unofficial" continuation of Purple Rain....it STUNK! I watched this thing, trying to be objective, trying to give this a chance....knowing full well it has a different plot line (which is weak to say the least), different actors etc...knowing a lot of people didn't like it. But damn, I didn't expect this...
First off, there is a different female lead in GB than in PR. I personally liked Apollonia Kotero in the original movie, and i wanted to know if they could've gotten married, or at least stayed together. But no, Prince lined up Ingrid Chavez to play his mousy, angel-faced muse. I really don't know what to think of her. She seems innocent, but she's a freak, and some scenes she shows it. The "love scenes" in this movie are rather tame when compared to ones in PR (good thing? I suppose)...but overall, the movie is just as racy as Prince would have it.
Once again, there is this rivalry between The Kid's band and Morris's "The Time", not just over the girl, but over a club. Once again, Morris falls for "Aura", just like he did for Apollonia in the original movie. Only instead of enlisting her to sing in a girl group, Morris wants to marry Aura apparently. Why exactly is beyond me because Morris can't feel emotions for women originating from anywhere above his waist. And with some manipulation and a lot of (what appears to be) chardonnay, Morris and Jerome take her home in the hopes that when she awakens and sees Morris, she will fall deeply in love with him ("falling in love with the first person she sees": a cute but corny allusion to being hit with Cupid's arrow). And like clockwork, The Kid comes along and carries her away. Literally.
I honestly don't know what to think really. It just doesn't feel right, the relationship between them. Aura is a sweet girl, and she's supportive, but she's not like Apollonia. Anyways, when she dies, one heartfelt ballad later, The Kid and Morris kiss and make up. Reminds me a bit of Romeo and Juliet, when the death occured, the rift between the two houses was mended.
All in all, I thought it was bad acting, a weak story line, and overall was pretty boring. I wish Prince picked up where he left off in PR. But I guess in his infinite wisdom, he decided to take it in a different (totally different) direction.
But there were somethings I liked. For instance, the many many musical numbers performed by the Time, George Clinton, Melody Cool (Mavis Staples), and The Kid's band. The following musical numbers owned...
1. Can't Stop This Feeling I Got - Prince
2. New Power Generation - Prince
3. Release It - The Time
4. Question of U - Prince
5. Elephants and Flowers - Prince
6. Round and Round - Tevin Campbell, Prince
7. We Can Funk - George Clinton, Prince
8. Joy in Repetition - Prince
9. Love Machine - The Time,
10. Tick, Tick, Bang - Prince
11. Shake! - The Time
12. Thieves in the Temple - Prince
13. Latest Fashion - Prince, The Time
14. Melody Cool - Prince, Mavis Staples
15. Still Would Stand All Time - Prince
I loved "Still Would Stand All Time" in particular. It was just one of those songs that moved me. Prince really outdid himself on that one. And about the "spirituality" angle he wanted in his music, I'm not entirely sure what exactly he was looking for. But then, this was an era where Prince was kinda finding his stance on religion...so I guess this was his attempt at it, because I think he wasn't entirely sure himself. But hey, Prince is Prince....and that movie is everything my mother and father warned me about. Sex, promiscuity, suggestive music, manipulative men, partial nudity.....pretty cool.
A brighter note? Prince's hair was pretty awesome and I wish he kept that look....
And so...GB hardly qualifies as a cult movie (and the criteria aren't that high) and you have to have a lot of patience to watch it. Morris and Jerome were one of the only poeple who kept this movie from falling apart. GB has some good moments...some good allusions, but as far as I'm concerned, I wouldn't watch it again unless I was extremely bored!
Sorry Prince, just not your best. The music rocked, the movie didn't. Better luck next time.
Don't mean to offend anybody, this is just my take.
