There is not nearly enough love for this Prince era and I can't fathom why!The album is a classic with songs like Thieves In The Temple,Still Would Stand All Time,The Question Of You and Joy In Repetition. How can people not dig it?The movie was far better than Purple Rain in my opinion although given the chance I would pick UTCM over PR anyday of the week. The cast even featured a young Tevin Campbell! The movie featured Prince in his all time sexy mode with his hair grown out along with him being in one of the most creative periods in his entire career! What is not to love people? There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of pictures taken of him during this time either sadly enough.sad

With that said show your love for this era or at least explain why you hate it!

um, no. The music may have an argument for your point. The film has no redeeming qualities. The sets look like they're from a high end broadway show, the acting is horrible, the movie sucked. End of discussion.

Compared to PR I think the sets were a big step forward.I don't understand why people hate on the sets because in PR you have Prince driving on his motorcycle with Apollonia with a camera view that makes the entire scene look like a car commercial,A murky lake,An alley way that looks like it is in a terrible part of town and I certainly wouldn't want to be caught there at night,Underneath a dilapidated bridge and on a shopping block that looks like it hasn't seen any renovation since the 1920's.Other than Prince's bedroom and the club the sets of PR were garbage.Of course if you compare GB and PR to UTCM there is no comparison because UTCM was filmed on location in Nice France so there is no real comparison there.

The acting in GB and in PR were pure garbage.Indefensible.I can't even deny that.

However GB redeeming feature would be the one liners back and fourth between Prince and Morris Day.A huge leap forward from PR in my book.

Once again, I think the main appeal to PR was the timing, MTV was hatching and the music video was all the rage, and PR is either a story strung along with many music videos, or a long music video strung along by a story line.

Also, PR was a complete story in no need of a sequel, and in reality only damaged by it. It was sort of like Jaws II, what are the odds of the second story acutally going down... right? In PR Prince killed his demons just like they blowed the shark away in Jaws, the begginning middle and end was satisfied.

There are a whole list of sequels that should never have been, especially in musicals... Grease II, Staying Alive, and didn't Grease even have a third movie with the return of Newton and Travolta?

So GB shouldn't have been made. UTCM... well that was an experiment. I kind of liked it. It was the first time I was really aware of how much Prince was in love with himself. PR didn't show that much of that. Prince was a control freak in PR, but not a narcisist.

Oh, u get my point.... now enter the smashers who disagree.... lol

It's in my top five albums. It has many of my all-time favorite Prince songs: New Power Generation, Joy in Repetition, Thieves in the Temple, We Can Funk, The Question of U, and Still Would Stand All Time. And most of the other songs are decent--only the title track and Shake don't cut it for me.

If you take Lovesexy and Graffiti Bridge and play mix and match, you get aural heaven.

I think that GB should have been made on its own and NOT as a sequel to PR and I think that was why so many people hate GB because they expected something that GB simply wasn't and that was a PR sequel. If GB was not edited at the 11th hour and they left in what should never have been taken out then GB would have been even more of a success.Prince made a mistake in trying to appease the critics with a PR sequel. He had set himself up for failure before he even began filming.

UTCM was a great movie!I love his line when asked if he read people's fortunes professionally."Madam I do nothing professionally I only do things for fun."

Sorry I usually don't say things like this but, you must have a boring tasteless life

Don't get me wrong now the PR soundtrack was great but aside from When Doves Cry the rest of those tracks are not really that special.Take me with you is ruined with the female voice of whatsherface there...Appolonia...I know I didn't spell that right. At least I think that is her voice. Not sure as I don't really like any of her songs.

Computer Blue is a good song but the ending just doesn't hit that Prince spot for me.

Lets go crazy was a groovy pop song.

As for Darling Nikki all I think about when I hear that song is him in the club running that girl off. That scene in the movie killed this song for me.The song itself is not bad.

The other two songs are just flop hits to me.

Graffiti Bridge was just hit after hit to me.

Everyone has a right to their own opinion but saying Graffiti Bridge soundtrack is better than the Purple Rain soundtrack is just crazy talk. Just when I thought I heard it all on the org, I see Darling Nikki being described as "not bad" and The Beautiful Ones not even worthy enough to mention. I hope I don't hear something crazier than this on the org. What am I thinking, of course I will.

Nope, there was never a third 'Grease' movie.Ten years ago, there was talk about a 'Grease' reunion movie with the original cast, but it never materialized.

I agree with you about 'Grease II'....it's horrible and never should have been made.

See, it's conflicting statements like this that make me think that even you don't understand what you're talking about. I get that you like Graffiti Bridge, but how can the Purple Rain soundtrack be 'great' and at the same time have 'only one good song on it'?

I think the GB soundtrack is not bad, the movie is occasionally cute but mostly just wince-inducing (the sets don't bother me at all - I understand it's supposed to look unreal), and the title track, well... I do like Prince's guitar tone on it! smile

I stand by my statement but perhaps I should make it more clear.PR did have a good soundtrack but my opinion is that there was only one really good song on the album as the other tracks I did not much care for but overall the album appealed to most.I don't want to just dismiss the entire soundtrack because I just don't get PR and perhaps after some enlightenment in the future it will grow on me.Its not like the songs were terrible they just didn't hit the spot for me.

I have always felt that PR was a compressed and slightly watered down continuation of 1999. The music was not absolutely the same, but you could see it headed there. While we did have the magic of Darling Niki, it did not kick balls like lets pretend we're married, and computer blue is the exiled sibling of Something in the Water doesn't Compute, Baby I'm a Star shines brightly over Delirious, When Doves Cry is the mold breaker, just as 1999 was, and yes, the song Purple Rain falls somewhere in between Free and International Lover. Well, imo.

Every other scene is shot in the same location, it gets redundant very early on.
