Graffiti Bridge Appreciation Thread

There is not nearly enough love for this Prince era and I can't fathom why!The album is a classic with songs like Thieves In The Temple,Still Would Stand All Time,The Question Of You and Joy In Repetition. How can people not dig it?The movie was far better than Purple Rain in my opinion although given the chance I would pick UTCM over PR anyday of the week. The cast even featured a young Tevin Campbell! The movie featured Prince in his all time sexy mode with his hair grown out along with him being in one of the most creative periods in his entire career! What is not to love people? There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of pictures taken of him during this time either sadly enough.sad

With that said show your love for this era or at least explain why you hate it!

I must agree with that statement.Graffiti Bridge the song really wasn't any good so the movie kind of fell flat because people expected it to be like Purple Rain but to be honest I hate that song too.

The movie was a more modern version of Purple Rain but with a better soundtrack and a much hotter Prince.

I think the soundtrack is okay. There are three or four songs that I really like: "Thieves In The Temple","We Can Funk","Can't Stop This Feeling I Got" and (sometimes) "Elephants and Flowers".

The other songs aren't terrible, just not very exciting shrug

How can you not like Joy In Repetition or Melody Cool? What about Round and Round?

"Joy In Repetition" is a fan favorite, but it has never done anything for me boxed "Round and Round" and "Melody Cool" are average tunes.

It took me a bit to come around to JIR myself and I can understand R&R being a bit too teeny bopper for most but you can't dig Melody Cool? eek

I only ever listen to my own version of GB that i burned to disc.
It misses out all The Time/Campbell and Staples tracks, and makes for a much better listen.

The Prince tracks stand on their own thats for sure but the other acts give the overall soundtrack a boost.

Don't get me wrong now the PR soundtrack was great but aside from When Doves Cry the rest of those tracks are not really that special.Take me with you is ruined with the female voice of whatsherface there...Appolonia...I know I didn't spell that right. At least I think that is her voice. Not sure as I don't really like any of her songs.

Computer Blue is a good song but the ending just doesn't hit that Prince spot for me.

Lets go crazy was a groovy pop song.

As for Darling Nikki all I think about when I hear that song is him in the club running that girl off. That scene in the movie killed this song for me.The song itself is not bad.

The other two songs are just flop hits to me.

Graffiti Bridge was just hit after hit to me.

Whenever we talk about Prince the genius, usually most people agree that his genius extended til 1998.

Some folks say it took a bump and then picked up again through Come and the Gold Experience. (I'm on record with saying ONA Piano was probably the only pure post 88 genius album).

I think the problem with GB lies in his choice of production. There are so many briliant songs on this record. But the cheesy production nearly swallowed them whole.

The lack of acoustic drums. The over processed keyboards. All the guest artists disrupting the flow.

When we're talking about the album, like Emancipation, this album gets trashed by a lot of people (somewhat justifiably) because of the poor production decisions (IMO).

But the album itself has many many stellar songs on it.

Saying it's better than PR is a bit nutty for my tastes, but that's what makes the world go round.

Take out the associated artist's songs, and it's a stronger album. I much more enjoy the original versions of "Can't Stop" and "We Can Funk". The ones on GB seem forced and weird. Not even the same song, in my head, as the originals.

Gems:
The Question of U
Joy In Repetition
Still Would Stand All Time
Thieves In The Temple
Shake! (Yes I know it's an associated artist, but it's a fun song).

I'm still not totally sold on "Elephants & Flowers". It's a bit over done. The rougher, earlier version seems more desirable. Title track is wacky beyond belief. Sounds like a left over Sesame Street song.

Don't forget Tick Tick Bang. I like the version on GB, but the original blows it away.
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

It's in my top five albums. It has many of my all-time favorite Prince songs: New Power Generation, Joy in Repetition, Thieves in the Temple, We Can Funk, The Question of U, and Still Would Stand All Time. And most of the other songs are decent--only the title track and Shake don't cut it for me.

If you take Lovesexy and Graffiti Bridge and play mix and match, you get aural heaven.

Lovesexy is unlistenable for me.Out of everything Prince has ever done I can honestly say that I HATE that album with a passion.I really tried to love it too or at least find it palatable but even after a few years I still don't dig lovesexy and it seems like such a sin too since pretty much everyone has it on their favorites list.

I only like the movie version.I just heard the original a day ago and I don't care for it at all.Elephants & Flowers was not a song that I liked off the bat but it grew on me.It just give me that sunny afternoon jam riding in a car down a highway with the car top down kind of feel.

Come and Gold were both great albums.I just feel like GB was the highest he ever hit when it came to producing soul cleansing music so to speak.
