I thought the 'Chaos' tracks pre-datde the Emancipation sessions - the appearance of Rosie Gaines and the 'Power trio' dates C&D to '93-95 (says it somewhere in the sleeve?).

C&D was a clear out of older material that he didn't care much for (he was still contracted to give WB another 2 albums, so he gave them 'vault' tracks. Emancipation was all new fresh stuff - nothing from the vault.

So they are really not connected at all. C&D is closer related to Diamonds & Pearls thru Gold Experience.

Rosie Gaines returned to add vocals to tracks on Chaos and Disorder as well as Emancipation. They were not originally recorded when she was in the band. She then came back one more time in '99 before stating she refused to work with Prince anymore.

1996: The year when Prince truly commited his own artistic suicide...

By that point the mainstream was tired of his changing names antics, the excessive amount of material (albums which received negative to average reviews) and the perception that Warner was somewhat right and Prince was the whinny little princess who just could not accept a "NO".

C&D flopped miserably and Emancipation could (and should) have been a true comeback (I mean, his most popular record since D&P) but instead it was a dud, the kind of record that only the hardcore can learn to love: pseudo-G/Funk production, filler everywhere, awful artwork, and weak, truly weak singles...

This is how Emancipation could have been successful (but of course Prince can do what he wants lol)

-A tight rock production (Emancipation was a pop album, sort of, and by 1996 neo-rock was truly big in the USA and Europe; it's irritating how C&D, the lesser album of that year, got the right production, while the important LP, Emancipation, received a dated and bland version of the G-Funk rap of the mid-90s... ),
-1 CD only with 14 or 16 strong tracks (we all know which ones)
-A deal with a new company (Mercury, Sony, etc.)

Emancipation could have been HUGE...but we all know what happened; granted the 1997-2000 years were even worse...and I don't like TRC, but it undoubtedly was a necessary musical rebirth for Prince...

Tracks that I still like:

-Jam of the Year
-Get Ya Groove On
-In This Bed I Scream
-Sex in the Summer
-Slave

From C&D:
-Dinner with Delores
-Had U

Dude, it is uncanny how similar some of our takes on things are. (Of course except your Lovesexy hatred, where you are just flat out W.R.O.N.G) razz

Any way, totally totally totally agree with you here about Emancipation production values. We were just talking about this last Sunday on Bluefishes radio program and I pretty much said the same thing.

I would defend Emanciaption to anyone because there are 12 to 18 really good songs on there. You just have to sift through 18 songs that are not that stellar AND get over the production value, (or lack thereof).

You singled out 5 of my favorites, but I would most definitely add My Computer, E-Mail, Somebody's Somebody (especailly the live in studio version), Emancipation, Face Down and Joint to Joint to the "A" list.

Chaos And Disorder (: 1996)
After much public feuding with Warner Bros, he agreed to deliver them one more new studio album, and promptly knocked this out over a long weekend. While the production doesn't sound rushed, the tunes seem like he made them up on the spot: routine funk like "Dig U Better Dead" and "I Rock, Therefore I Am" is prolonged by boring guest rappers; "Dinner With Delores" recycles "Money Don't Matter 2Night"'s pop sound; "Zannalee," the most enjoyable track on the CD, is just an uptempo blues. Lyrically too, it's all reruns. The silver lining is that, under pressure to create excitement quickly, he falls back on the exquisite lead guitar playing that he often displays in concert but has rarely recorded; the otherwise generic rocker "I Like It There" and ballad "I Will" benefit from this treatment. Michael Bland's drumming is also spotlighted more than on earlier releases. Still, Prince is capable of so much better that you'd have to be a completist to want this. (DBW)

Emancipation (: 1996)
A 36-song, three-hour set, and I've lowered the rating half a star because the sheer amount of music here will overwhelm most non-fans. But taken in proper doses, it's terrific: His newlywed status made him more romantic than ever, with several of the best ballads he's ever written ("One Kiss At A Time," "Let's Have A Baby," "Dreamin' About U") plus the smile-inducing "Sex In The Summer." Vocally he's at his peak, musically he's overflowing with ideas, and the genre-mixing is more focused than usual: "Joint 2 Joint" uses everything from tap dance to a slap bass trio as it deconstructs the singles scene; "Damned If I Do" switches effortlessly from pop-rock to plugged-in Latin jazz; "In This Bed I Scream" segues from a lovely melodic vocal to an atonal distorted guitar jam. All his experiments work this time around (including big band swing on "Courtin' Time"), the only problems come when he plays it safe: there's too much uptempo funk rehashing "Partyman" ("Mr. Happy," "Get Yo Groove On"), too many Babyface-sounding slow jams ("Somebody's Somebody"), plus four covers of which only "Betcha By Golly Wow" was really worth the trouble. Lyrically, he's still very self-absorbed, with plenty of tracks complaining about his treatment by the music industry ("White Mansion," "Slave") and the media ("Face Down"). But you've got to give it up for anybody who can make a melodic chorus out of "www.emale.com" - twenty albums under his belt and more inventive than ever. (DBW)

With all the boots out around this time (319, Glam Slam North & South, The Beautiful Experience DVD, The Undertaker clips, etc.) Chaos and Emancipation were both somewhat disappointing for me. If you're into this era, the fan-created set of studio tracks called "The Dawn" is definitely worth seeking out -- my favorite Prince "album" of the 90's for sure!

I love Chaos and Disorder. I love the guitar heavy feel of the first half of it.

Its always in my top 15 Prince albums.

"Why'd I waste my kisses on you baby?" R.I.P. Prince You've finally found your way back home. Well Done.
