I love the look too. The blue outfit against the clean white background and the use of that particular funky font were nice graphically, as far as I'm concerned. I know a lot of folks hate it and call it his "Smurf" look, but I even think the sprout bows in his hair are kinda cool. The cover is almost a clothed call-back to the Lovesexy album. The subtle changed eye position between the Rave Un2 and In2 was classic.

As far as the songs go, it's hit and miss. The Rave In2 remix CD is much better in my opinion and the inclusion of the reworked Beautiful Strange gives it an extra star.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I think like most Prince eras, this one is becoming (an will continue to be) more loved as time goes on. Now, can we get some more pics from this era. Prince looked very lovesexy pt. 2 during this time.

What's your rating of this album cut vs the live intro of this song during the Lovesexy aftershow '88?

The look of this era is growing on me, but i still hate the Rave Un2 cover. lol "The Greatest Romance..." video is nice.

I actually like the album too. No one seems to like "Silly Game" but I love it! I think a lot of the duets ("Undisputed", "Hot Wit U", "Baby Knows") are weaker than the solo tracks. I like how the songs blend into each other though. "Segue" into "Man O War" is great.

The Greatest Romance Ever Sold

The greatest romance that's ever been sold
So whatdya know, U and me
Finally face 2 face
Checkin' each other up and down
In all of the obvious places
Was there ever a reason
4 us 2 be apart
The air that fills up this room says "not hardly"
So this is where U end
And U and I begin (This is where U and I, U and I begin)

CHORUS:
The greatest romance that's ever been sold
The greatest romance that's ever been sold

Baby, baby
Now your mind is open
2 poetry seldom heard
Your heart has never been broken
Until U've heard these words:
"Your body was designed 2 respond 2 mine
In spite of your desire 2 mold me"
And in the middle of it all
We kiss and like rain we fall into... (Like rain, we fall)

CHORUS
(Oh baby, oh baby, baby)

Oh, I know U feel me, I know that U can dance (Help)
But what do U know about the greatest romance?
Not what U think, but what U believe (Tell me)
What was the real reason that Adam never left Eve
And if the truth sounds like a memory
Then U know it was meant 2 be, meant 2 be (Meant 2 be)
Leave your inhibitions behind
Come on, come on, let's see (What? Why)

So this is where U end (This is where U end)
And U and I begin (U...)

CHORUS
(Uh huh uh huh)

I know U can feel me, I know U can dance (I know)
But what do U know about the greatest romance?
(The greatest romance that's ever been sold)
Not what U think, but what U believe
Can U tell me the real reason that Adam never left Eve
(The greatest romance that's ever been sold) (Greatest romance)
Listen 2 me, uh, U brought me the grapes from the vine, oh, yes U did
(The greatest romance that's ever been sold)

Can I talk 2 U? (Talk 2 U)
Listen, U help me 2 remember the secrets of time
And U, U, U, U offer me your love, your love, your love so divine
And in return girl and in return I will surrender
Aw yeah, I will surrender, oh yes I will

The greatest romance that's ever been sold

some of it stunk like i cant get thru baby knows but also some classics on it too that stand up to his best work ... where ever u go .. dont trust u anymore ... and the remix of man o war are classics .. i dig sad but true and beautiful strange i like most of the vault quite a lot .. i like his style he kinda looks like he hit his teenage highschool years in his mind pretty cool confident .. i give it a 3 out of 10 for 3 classic songs and a bunch of filler with some bearable jams thrown in so slightly better than planet earth which i would give a 2 1/2 for having 2 1/2 classic songs on it which i get from the 1 classic song chelsae and i only give somewhere here and baby mama 3/4 stars cuz they are not quite a classic but still pretty good .. so yes i'd listen to this over plantet earth but just slightly

Man'O'War

Why U screamin'?
U know I'm not a man of war
Break a gold chain that I gave U
Throw it down on the floor
Instead of this 7 page letter
I wish I had peace of mind
My friends tell me, "U should go get her"
But lovin' U, lovin' U, lovin' U is a waste of time
Oh, yes it is, it's a waste of time, ooh

I need 2 get out of this city
I need 2 get U outta my head
I need 2 get away from the words that U said 2 me

(Why U screamin'?) Oh, baby
(U know I'm not a man of war)
How could U have think that I could put something inside of someone
That I put inside U, inside U?
Even if I tried 2, if I tried 2 (Tried 2, tried 2)
I couldn't cuz I still smell like that last time when we
I.. but lovin' U, lovin' U, lovin' U's a waste of time (Is a waste of time)
Oh, yes it is
But lovin' U is a waste of time, baby

Ooh
I need 2 feel wanted again
I need 2 feel love is alive, yeah
I need 2 hear U say that U ain't lookin' 4 another reason 2 make me cry

Why U screamin'? (Ooh uh)
U know I'm not a man of war
I've been tryin' 2 make U happy, baby, ever since we were sophomores
But lovin' U, lovin' U, lovin' U's a waste of time
Oh, yes it is (Is a waste of time)
Ooh, it's a waste of time, waste of time, waste of time

If there is no future
Then there is no past
And all we've got is right now
Let us make it last, make it last, make it last, ooh

Why U screamin'?
U know I'm not a man of war
Break the gold chain that I gave U
Throw it down on the floor (Oh, throw it down)
Instead of this 7 page letter
I wish I had peace of mind
My friends tell me, they tell me, "U should go get her"
But lovin' U, lovin' U, lovin' U's a waste of time
Oh, a waste of time, yeah

I need 2 get out of this city
I need 2 get U outta my head
I need 2, I need 2 get away from the words that U said 2 me
I need 2, hey, I need 2 feel wanted again, oh
I need 2, huh, feel no sin
Hear me

(But lovin' U, lovin' U, lovin' U...)

Why U screamin'?
U know I'm not a man of war
Break the gold chain that I gave U
Throw it down on the floor (Oh baby)
Instead of this 7 page letter
I wish I had peace of mind
But my friends tell me, "U should go get her"
But lovin' U, lovin' U, lovin' U is a waste of time
U know I'm not a man'o'war

For me this clearly marked the transition period from: (trying to remain a) fan to: still interested but not really bothered.

I loved the graphic design though. One of the best album covers in my opinion.

I really think he was to disalusioned and proud to carry it off, but it was prime time if he got Lisa & Wendy and a a couple of other Revolution members + [Sheila E. Jill Jones] and did the Roadhouse Garden album

I think it's a very good fun album. I wasn't super thrilled with it at first because it was too poppy (although it was much better than his previous supposedly funky album). Seeing those pictures, he certainly had a unique "look".

Overall I'd give it a 7/10.

I like most of the songs a number of them have elements or parts that bring them down.

Rave. I love this track, the vocals and the way the guitar sounds and is mixed. 10/10

Undisputed. Love the drum programing and the way the vocal is delivered and again has a great bit of Guitar in there. What brings it down is the "NPG Get Rowdy now". It's just to shouty. 8/10

TGRES. Love the song, great Melody. But why does he have that record scraching noise on there. It adds nothing. 8/10

Hot Wit U. OK. 5/10

Tangerine. It's ok nothing great, I like the extended version a little bit more. 6/10

So Far, So Pleased. Nothing mind blowin' but a really nice pop Rock song. 8/10

The sun, The Moon and Stars. I really like this song up until the rap part. The strings are really nice and it flows over you, but the rap knock it down. 7/10.

Everyday is a winding road. I really don't like this. 3/10

Man O War. Love it no complaits, multi layerd vocals and some nice guitar. 8/10

Baby Knows. I'm sure it was the first time in quite a while since we'd heard the camille vocal effect. Cool funky song. 8/10

I Love U But I don't Trust U Anymore. It's a good song, a really good song. 9/10

Silly Game. I always kinda forget about this song until It starts. It's nothing earth shattering but I like it. 7/10

Strange But True. Fantastic. Love it. So much going on. The highlight of the album 10/10

WEUGWEUD. It's ok, but needs a guitar solo at the end. It's just a bit too twee for Prince. 6/10

Pretty Man. Love it. 9/10

Beautiful Strange. I love this and just wish he'd included it on the album. 9/10.
Something BIG Is Coming.

i thought the end of the 90s - start of the 2000s was his lost period...musicially he lost his way...there are a few songs on rave that i enjoy but overall...very weak...then we had those weak npgmc albums and the rainbow children....i liked the REAL organic sound he had on rainbow after all those plastic sounding albums he released starting with emancipation but rainbow still lacked strong songs.....musicology was a bit better.....a half decent pop album then , for me , .....3121 was his return to a bit of form with some strong material which , imo , he has kept going with planet earth and lotusflower.....he will never be as original as he was in the 80s but i enjoy listening to most of his new stuff in the last 6 years....
