With this track, Prince continues the dual trend that he's been on over the past few releases: on the one hand the song evidences greater technical & compositional proficiency than before in terms of phrasing, chord changes, and playing; yet on the other hand the lyrics showcase his increasing emotional distance from his audience (& from himself, if I can be so bold).

Lyrically, he is no longer willing to share his struggles (of the flesh, mind, heart, or soul) with his art or his audience (even though he HAS to have struggles because that is what makes us human). Instead we get someone trying to convince himself that everything is okay because he is saved (of the Elect) because he is made in the image of God (not "cause" as the circulating lyrics indicate) and is subject to no man.

His art no longer asks questions, but aspires to provide answers. It's not inviting. When he declares, "I am here" and then asks "Where are you?" one gets the sense that he's not really interested in where "you" are, as much as he is preoccupied in telling us where "I am." This artist believes his "here" is where everyone should be.

When this phrasing first appeared in his work, it was the Rebirth of the Flesh, and the declaration was "We are here, where are you." WE. There is no more WE in Prince's world. Prince is in autobiographical mode. This is about him. He is writing/reflecting on HIS life story, and trying to fit the pieces into the narrative of what he considers "The Greatest Story Ever Told."

It's an old and tried true story, but one gets the sense that in his work it is forced or contrived--it's not organic. His metaphors and language is too easily and directly drawn from religious scripture. Maybe Prince feels if you're going to, what better to signify on than what's believed to be Divine words? What it means is that we're not going to get yellow daisies in the yard, bubble baths with pants on, animals striking curious poses or any of that weird-only-Prince-could-come-up-with-this-shit type of language.

ON. POINT. clapping

Great post, i feel the same way as the bolded part. When ego or pride is placed in his music it is not always going to connect. Show me real raw emotion, whatever it is, Prince pour your heart out and i'll fall in love with you every time!

it is perfectly okay for people to say they don't like a Prince song. Some of you need to truly get over yourselves.

OK... to me, having reads the "possible" lyrics posted earlier, it appears to be a 2 fingered salute to all the people (Prince.org regulars included) who think Prince should be a certain way, play a certain way...
The bit about being a superstar or himself? Yeah, he's saying that he'd rather be himself than be what others want him to be... And this is what we should love about this... whenever has Prince done anything that could be classed as normal? He does what he wants, when he wants, how he wants. Admire him, or just don't get the point...
I like it. It's not his best, but he's done that before. It's new Prince. Like it. Or don't. He won't care...

I think if any orger has been so consistently disappointed with Prince's output for an extremely long period of time that it's time to move on already. Obviously he isn't doing what you need him to do as an artist. Keep in mind though many on here bashed other songs and CDs only to have them grow on them over time. so before you go on the 'this song is Prince by the numbers' bandwagon maybe you should give it some time. If it's really over for you then let it be over already.

I love how you think you're gonna bump people out of this joint. It aint happening lol

[Edited 2/27/10 13:53pm]
Why do people do that?

Every time Prince comes out with a new song is a chance to fall in love with the music again. At least those of us that others consider "haters" are still here supporting each endeavor by buying the music or at least listening to him.

I think some of these people would be perfectly happy if no dissenting opinions were on this site at all.

I was really literally talking about Peacocks. I've had some experience with them. My Family in Mississippi owned 3 of them. A male that I named Prince...A Female that I named Mama...and a White Female that I named, Jasmine.

They lived on 40 acres for 5 years before they left. They were never penned, and lived in the Oak Trees. I bought them seed dishes and water dishes. I followed them around. They alert U like dogs do when someone has come onto the property. And they can be very mean. U wanna think they are so sweet and cute until U see them attack tools in a toolshed! And chase after chickens. razz

I actually had no intention on listening to the song or giving my input on it. Once I read the lyrics, I knew I would not like it. To me, it's almost as if he is playing victim, as if he has no guilt in anything that has happened to him or the public's general opinion of him. He says he doesn't care but yet keeps writing songs about it instead of just talking to people like someone with some damn sense. So many of his apologists here talk about how some of us should move on but their very own hero is stuck in the past and continues to act like my spoiled 15 year old daughter.

People complain because they say we don't understand him. Yet, he could clear that up if he truly wanted to.

I totally agree on all your points. I was just thinking earlier about something in relation to what you said. People have asked Prince a couple of questions over the years, them being 1) what do you want to be remembered for, and 2) why haven't you written an autobiography?

Prince's answer has always been "the music speaks for itself". Yet when we dig into his music, and try to understand him more or learn about something in his life (like writing about Susannah, Susan, the Revolution breaking up, Mayte, or whatever), then he get defensive, and insists we are being too nosy, and he doesn't have to tell anyone anything.

That whole 'mystique' thing he had going for a while is not just a 'mystake'. 50 year old men don't have a mystique. They have saggy bottoms and a knee that pops every once in a while like a ping pong ball on concrete.

I agree about the hypocrisy of the "I'll never wear that purple coat again", yet he's constantly hearkening back to "my old sound" or whatever. It's a bait and switch in some ways, and down right two-faced in others. Talk about a cock tease! haha

It's amazing at how polished and produced his recent output is. Everything is like a Disney song turned up to 12 on the sheen scale. I imagine Fergie or Miley Cyrus hearing the playback of a song like Cause and Effect in the studio and even they'd say "You know, I think it needs at least a shake of grit over it."

As for his lyrics, as I've already deftly stated, when you think you've got all the answers in life, when you become a pietistic pop-preacher for religion and dogma, there's nothing to sing about other than daft praise for your spaghetti monster in the sky and to remonstrate against those infidels who dare live their lives with a critical and nuanced capacity for rational thought. Lyrics were never his strong suit, they aren't for the majority of pop artists, but he seems to have hit the nadir of insufferable verse and while I won't begrudge the man for religious decisions which are wholly his own business, it's slowly turned his art from mediocre pop/funk to full on self parody. Can anyone but a sycophantic dullard already not predict what his next record will sound like? A lame stab at reinventing the Minneapolis sound for the umpteenth time with a glossy production so treble laden that it'll blind those brave enough to give it a listen.
No hard feelings.

great new track.
always astonishing how people over-analyze his music.
that someone posted he's become disconnected lyrically from his audience is laughable when you take a listen to what he was writing during Parade and Lovesexy yet were great releases. Boom, Colonized Mind, Wall of Berlin were great musically and lyrically. If people weren't so fixated on his religion, then they'd probably appreciate his lyrics more.

again, great new track.

You are not going to chase anything or anyone away. I do wish you would stop with the faux religious babble though. someone who refers to themselves as christian does not say the things you say to people in defense of someone whom you apparently do not know well at all. those encouraging you here are enablers and Prince himself not speaking out to the deluded ones but criticizing those who dare speak their own minds, something he wants fro himself, is laughable at best.

'Made in the image of Cause and Effect' sounds also like ' Made in the Image of God', and 'I am what I am because I affect', ie. because he causes an effect on people / affects people, thats why he's so well known / is who he is today.

i also heard it MADE IN THE IMAGE OF GOD...

People aren't made in the image of God. They're made in the image of their parents. Humans invented God as a way to explain the unexplainable, and to control the masses. As we progress scientifically, God becomes less and less of a possibility. But, it gives comfort to people who aren't very smart, or to those who need a crutch to get through life.

You've missed the mark entirely. There's nothing being said about connecting with his audience through his lyrics. I don't need to hear him sing about how we're both brilliant conveyors of thought but I also don't need to hear pulpit pap that does nothing but make him look like a mental midget with a grasp on world history and religion that only a five year old after their first Sunday school lesson could love. Someone earlier made mention of some of his great lyrics, the pants on in a bubble-bath, animals striking curious poses, etc; it wasn't Yeats but it also didn't sound like a self-parody of Christian rock lite which is what his current crop of lyrics come across as.

I imagine he's still got a decent sense of melody (good luck finding one that doesn't meander into a nebulous blob on Cause and Effect tho) and he's undoubtedly got a singular style of guitar playing; maybe he should record a record of pop instrumentals with a new band and hope for the best.
No hard feelings.
