Why would they care about old rehearsal footage? Prince took it down, once he read about it in this thread. lol

WB can see monetisable asset.
Prince cannot.
Prince only sees his `rights`, not a way to make easy money.

Did anyone see the NPGrecords (C) claims to teh old vids?
Where was NPGrecords during the Revolution days?
Who made the vids back then? For whom?
How did the rights transfer to NPGrecords?

Hmm?

A personal home video is not owned by the record company. WB doesn't own his VHS collection, or his couch, or his fridge, or his comforter. There is no ownership or rights transfer.

Prince made the video for himself. He's known, even back then, to record rehearsals and performances and dissect them. It obviously wasn't meant to be released in any fashion. It's black and white, poorly lit and there's no direct sound feed, it's one angle, and there's not even any panning or zooming.

NPG is Prince. Period.

Just the video players are there. When you click play you get a message that the "video is no longer available due to a copyright claim from NPG Records".

Yes, on the website you keep going to, but if you search the site those video players are linked to, they are there. All of them.

Oh Lord, I just finished watching the videos and they took me back to the Prince I grew up with. This era and previous eras is the Prince I knew and loved from my junior high and high school years. No horns, no orchestras, no jazz, and no artsy/fartsy stuff, just badass throwin' down. The Prince that followed the very next year after this era was like a completely different person altogether. Great footage. This is the type of stuff his early fans ate up and wanted more of.
Andy is a four letter word.

Hey, we got past 'Jughead" and "1999 - The New Master'.

As Tr-i said: "Time Heals". (Maybe)

lol But people only stopped bringing up Jughead, Wedding Feast and 1999 The New Master when Purple And Gold surfaced. There's a new king in town.

i'm pretty sure the version on jill jones album is a studio recording, but the circulating prince "outtake" is from the first avenue show, not the rehearsal

His "studio" at the time was the newer warehouse in Eden Prairie. The recording of the song is listed as having been recorded on June 7, 1984. And with the stop/start in the video, I'm led to believe that the play through we see on the video is, in fact, the "studio" recording.

This from Per's book:
Our Destiny (June 7) * Roadhouse Garden (June 7) * All Day, All Night (June 7)

After abandoning the St. Louis Park warehouse in late 1983, a warehouse on Flying Cloud Drive in Eden Prairie was rented for band rehearsals and recordings. It was used until the Purple Rain tour began in November 1984. Most of Around The World In A Day and the complete Family album were recorded here.

Wendy and Lisa later worked on "Our Destiny" at Sunset Sound, September 27th to 29th, 1984. They oversaw the recording of strings and horns. Prince actually used the strings as an interlude between "Pop Life" and "the Ladder" on Around The World In A Day.

Having read all that, I believe that whoever set up that camera (and it might have very well been Prince, knowing his history for recording stuff to critique and dissect it later), inevitably caught the recording of three "studio" versions, including the Jill Jones track.

i've not watched the video in a while, but i'm pretty sure it's not the same as the jill jones version. the show version from 07/06/84 has been circulating on boots as an "outtake" since the 80s, and it sounds a lot rougher than the studio version on the jill jones album. the text above doesn't state anything specific about the jill jones version. like manic monday for example, it could be the very basics of the studio version, but overdubbed to hell and back so the overdubs pretty much replace most of the live take. prince overdubbed his guitar playing over the top of wendys on the released version of purple rain for example, but unless you really compared the versions you wouldn't have noticed the difference between it and the live version, apart from it being shorter/edited and having strings etc added. you could perhaps tell it's had some work, but not a major part rerecorded

i'll maybe compare all the versions later today and see what's what

Reread what I typed. The "studio" is the warehouse. The date of the recording is June 7th. There's no way a live version from a concert is the version that ended up on Jill's album. It's the one we see on the video.

so basically, in the most long winded way possible, you are agreeing with me that the video isn't showing a recording of anything that ends up on the jill jones album?

You're not reading, and you're wrong in your assumptions. I believe the video does, in fact, show the Jill Jones basic track being recorded.

Habibi's release of the rehearsal in preparation for the First Avenue June 7th 1984 birthday concert. Professionally filmed by a single camera on a tripod, this is a fascinating insight into the the band's rehearsal. This video recording has been circulating for many years, however the picture quality has always been far below par, and is frustratingly poor on many releases. It is my pleasure to say that this Habibi release is perhaps the best I have seen of the many, many versions I have had the misfortune to sit through. The picture is far clearer, much sharper and more defined. And with the improved picture quality comes a major improvement with the sound too. One of my major bitches about previous releases of this footage have been that the sound was very muddy, and practically impossible to enjoy - thankfully it is clear and (almost) problem free on here. All that said, this release is not without it's problems. There are some minor occasional glitches throughout, and the worst of these occur during 'Something In The Water' where the picture drops out for a few seconds. Overall though, the problems only make up a tiny fraction of the footage, and the remainder is superb. The menu's are very basic, and normally I would have complained at how amateur they are - however because the quality of the footage is so good, the menu's are unimportant.

The best information available to me(Per`s research, album credits) suggests that Ernest is right and that Jill`s version was based on one of the versions recorded at rehearsal that day. It is possible however that the videotape did not record the whole rehearsal and that the version on Jills album was committed to tape pre or post the video recording.
The version on Jill`s Album may also have been overdubbed heavily, to a point where very little of the original recording is evident.
Another point to bear in mind is that Prince/Paisley park credit notes (and probably session notes) are far from perfectly accurate documents. Much of the information concerning when and where things were recorded is dubious or just plain wrong.
I remember a story that the original version of we can funk (where prince actually sings we can fuck) was in a tape box written up as being "Moral Majority" to confound any prudes who may be overseeing Prince`s use of studio time at Sunset sound.
Per`s research also suggested that much of the recording credits on "the vault , old freinds for sale " were pretty much wrong.

Prince will come out with something great to make you forget about it and all will be forgiven. It'll be fine.

Maybe "Purple and Gold" was his "The Girl Is Mine" and we have a great new CD coming from Prince.
