Rave Unto the Joy Fantastic 88 Hey, many people see Lovesexy as being a creative peak for Prince. With Batman coming next the project Rave Unto the Joy Fantastic got pushed aside. Does anyone know of any other tracks that were supposed to appear on the album apart from below:
Rave unto the Joy Fantastic If I Had a Harem We Got the Power The Voice Inside Am I Without U? I wonder how much of Batman was made up of Rave songs? It would have been interesting to hear what the original album could have sounded like, would it have continued along Lovesexy lines or be similar to Batman. Probably the latter I would guess.

I would love to hear the original version of this album.Such a cool title and track should have been rewarded a better fate than what we got back in '99.Either version would be ok with me. I'd love to hear some of those songs .

Did Prince record his own version of Melody Cool, or was it always Mavis on vocals? ā€ˇhttps://www.youtube.com/@PurpleKnightsPodcast

In a Rolling Stone article it is mentioned that for the Batman movie Prince wrote an instrumental "The Batman Theme" that was later discarded and 2 songs "Rave to the Joy Fantastic" & "200 Balloons" that tim Burton didn't think worked with the film. When asked for more material Prince came back with "Trust" & "Partyman". When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

There is a circulating version with Prince's vocal. The track was one of the earliest recorded for Graffiti Bridge in '87, back when it was in earliest incarnation (this is the dreamy script with Camille, Sheila/Cat - no sequel to Purple Rain/The Time/Mavis/battle of the bands stuff that came later). . 'The Voice Inside' is different to 'The Voice' released by Mavis Staples. The Voice Inside is more like 'Trust'. Sophianestesia said: Oh, wait, is that my very first post? U got my eyes wet... [Edited 5/22/09 3:00am]

The circulating Prince vocal version is a later recording from the Graffiti Bridge sessions, where Prince simply sang a guide vocal for Mavis to sing over. The earlier unreleased version features slightly different lyrics and is sung from a third person perspective... "They call her Melody Cool. She'll make U break all the rules..."

I had a long rambling post about it how I thought it sounded like a guide vocal, but had still originally been recorded previous to working with Mavis, but edited it out for succinctness (succinctity? ) . I think Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic would have been a better follow-up to Lovesexy than Batman was. Now, Batman could be excused by being a soundtrack, but it certainly seemed to derail the creative momentum he had going. I think Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic would have been more appreciated by fans and critics alike.
And then Graffiti Bridge came along and did nothing to put Prince back on his critically acclaimed track. Again. it could be excused with being a soundtrack, but then came Diamonds And Pearls and it was evident that Prince had lost it. It would have been interesting to see in which musical directions Prince would have gone following a release of Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic. Unfortunately, Warners didn't want to release a new Prince album so soon after Lovesexy at the time, so it's all Warners' fault that Prince's career got derailed. It would be a wet dream come true if any or all of the Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic configurations ever got released. FREE THE 29 MAY 1993 COME CONFIGURATION!

There's a recent thread about creativity and which albums ppl consider to highlight such peaks. Your comments are interesting to read. i agree. Batman til near the end of WB releases did feel like a derailment of sorts. That was the period when I lost the excited feel for every release for the firsdt time. There have been some great subsequent creative periods TGE for example but his period was, IMO, not one of them. Anyway, at the risk of highjacking this informative thread, I will STFU !

But when Rave88 wasn't released, why did Prince called his album like that in 1999 when almost no original Rave-song was included? I don't get it.
And Yes, this would be a very pleasent next-release Have a look at 'The W2A: Euro Tour Song Survey' http://prince.org/msg/12/362417

And Yes, this would be a very pleasent next-release When I learned of the original configuration of Rave from 88/89, I thought the same thing Trashcat. It should have been those songs and not what came out in 1999. I agree with Moonbeam, this should go straight to lotusflow3r.com I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Yes its a shame the original wasn't released in 1999 instead as the Rave Un2 album only had the title track re-recorded and all other new songs...
The Voice Inside is one of Prince's best songs....Moonbeam Levels I believe he recorded around 1982 for inclusion on 1999, but perhaps he decided to put it on the tracklist. [Edited 5/22/09 10:21am] [Edited 5/22/09 10:22am]

It seems he does that. But maybe he's convinced that his brand new material is far better than what could have been. Paul McCartney, when asked which was the greatest song he ever wrote, he answered: 'The one I'm gonna write'. I cannot say it's always true. By the way, there are songs that never leaked, like say Good Judy Girlfriend or Stimulation.

And Yes, this would be a very pleasent next-release funny u say that cause 4 me when i listen 2 the song rave, i've always had the version from small club in 88 so in '99 it's a 11 year old track, once track 2 comes on that's when the present day prince showed up some songs from the original configuration had been released since then but still it's odd 2 have a well known track 4 the diehards released as a title cut years later .. man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I very much dig the 88 version of the song 'Rave unto the joy fantastic'. At least: the live version of the song on the 'Small Club' boot, i don't know if there is a studio-version of it from that year.
Anyway, it pisses all over the version from '99... lol Some of his most ferocious guitar soloing I ever heard.
