Oh really now? You ask John M...so what the fuck am I? Chopped liver? I've been listening to Prince since 1978...from the tender age of 8 years old! I was RAISED on Prince's music! You best and believe that I consider myself a TRUE Prince FAN but I just ain't feeling his NEW music! I KNOW he's musical genius! I KNOW he is a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer! I KNOW he has written, produced and composed all of his music since Day 1! You tell...John M...that I don't have to UNDERSTAND a damn thing...when it comes to Prince because...the Prince that I KNOW and will ALWAYS love INSTILLED that in me...a long time ago!

I RAISED MYSELF to be in the NEW BREED! Not because it was the popular choice! Not because it was the only thing going! Not because it was the easiest thing to do! I did it because it is what spoke to my spirit, made me think and helped me grow as a person! BECAUSE of Prince and his wonderful, incredible music...to this very day...I'm not afraid to say shit stanks...when it I KNOW that it DOES!! I KNOW that I don't have to be...even if that shit is coming from PRINCE...himself! Which for the last several years...it indeed has been!

That whole...Prince makes his music for his ears from his heart...is just some distracting bullshit because for whatever his reasons...this new Prince is all about making music for the MASSES and the pockets of the GREEDY! It's like we've been living through some Invasion Of The Body Snatchers Nightmare type shit because I don't even recognize MY Prince anymore! I haven't seen any signs of HIM in quite a long while!! shrug
[Edited 5/8/09 20:40pm]

He even asks in one of his new and putrid songs.."Where am I?" I don't know Prince, where are you and when are you coming back?

i don't know why this yahoo article decided to focus solely on prince. what are those who are supposedly considered his "peers" up to these days? is madonna still wowing them like she used to? what's michael jackson done in the past 2 decades?

i think a much more interesting article would be to compare and contrast the relationship between aging 80s icons and their aging fans, as opposed to the last generation of aging pop stars and their baby boomer fans. going after prince specifically seems a bit like shooting fish in a barrel.

That might very well make for an intereting article, but that's not what this was intended to be: it's a review of Prince's latest release.

On another note: its not a Yahoo piece. Yahoo picked it up, but its from Rock's Back Pages, a pretty fantastic site that featuresa a huge collection of the best of rock journalism, dating back 40 years or so.

It read to me like a review of someone like a whole lot of us...that have been giving Prince a pass...based on what we know he is capable of but haven't been calling him out on because...because well...he's Prince! And those that KNOW... KNOW INDEED that he is indeed special!

However, when you make repeated conscience efforts to distance yourself from what has made you great by INSISTING on being judged on what you are doing NOW...it will happen! And if your NOW isn't all that you and those too afraid to cross you...think it is! Well, eventually the chips will fall where they may! shrug

i will say that i really like the production on elixer...it doesn't matter if it's bria or a drunk-ass dolphin singing the lead vocals, the album sounds nice. and for a prince project it's very consistent and focused. i wouldn't go as far as what stanley's saying, but i think elixer is a lot better than most people give it credit for...if you listen to it as a showcase for prince's talents instead of trying to squeeze something out of bria's presence on that album, you'll have a much better time with the music.

For me it's all about if I can listen to a given record without my gag reflex kicking in. Lotusflow3r and MPLSound have some good songs for mixtape playlists, but I don't see myself listening to either of them very often as full albums. I do find myself coming back to Planet Earth every once in a while over the past couple of years. In spite of the lyrics and the Loudness War production values, there are some good chord changes and turnarounds in quite a few of its songs. I especially like the transition from 'Future Baby Mama' into 'Mr. Goodnight.' (<-- I know, I know!) Who knows, maybe these new albums will eat away at me, over time, and I'll find myself listening to them again a few years from now. They just don't feel like cohesive works, to me.

Bria's disc is just nice. I like listening to it. I find myself humming the songs without even realizing I'm thinking about them. The production is well balanced and doesn't hurt my ears even if I crank up the volume. (Which is sadly not true of any other Prince album, with the exception of The Rainbow Children, since the '90s.) Songs like 'Home' and 'Everytime' capture that impossibly catchy r&b thing he had going with some of the unreleased tracks from 1990-1991. This album almost sells me on Prince's whole "blue aura" thing. It's light and pleasant -- and that's not an insult!

"Purple Drain" was also the name of an article in the Poineer Press (St. Paul's newspaper) about his dwindling funds in the mid 90's, and his lack of paying bills.

I gave up on Prince in the mid-90s. He's sucked since 1990. hasn't written a truly great song since the late 80s.

Can't wait to hear posters recite all the crap songs he's released since then that they will claim are great songs.

Why is this no~brainer of a "critic" speaking like he's speaking for us?

I guess i will do the same back.

1st of all, terrible points made.

2nd of all, Prince today is the most on fire yet! FGFBFW is evident of his confidant mindset.

3rd, Planet Earth...yeah, pick out the worst prince album and the one that is most re-hash prince to try and clarify your point of when prince sounds fresher.

4th, Name checking PR...AGAIN! Like all those who don't got no clue do. Lets go Crazy is one of his worst songs imo, idiot!

5th, Prince is a MILES better performer today then yesterday.

6th, Prince is happier today...therefore, the prince i wish for has arrived.

7th, The Lotus set is one of the most versatile, fresh, unpredictable, joyful albums ive heard in...god i can't remember!

One of the worst "articles" ive read. It really does showcase everything thats wrong with world.

These articles show how much Prince is/was deemed as revolutionary by the musical press and masses for such a long time. Some people still think he can churn out anoher Purple rain, which shows on some levels the respect the man garners and the state of the music industry needing somethings good.

Can he ever top the 1980-1988 Golden age? Not impossible, but the guy has done so much musically that he what he gave us in that time can never really be topped.

With that being said, Lotus Flower is a pretty decent album (minus BRia's). It suffers from the same issue that plagues most Prince albums post Lovesexy (minus the Rainbow Children). It sounds like Prince on autopilot chasing current trends and his lyrics are uninspired. I will be the first to admit, I am spoiled by the fact that he is/was a continuation of the Hendrix/Sly/Pfunk/James Brown sounds and it is what keeps me attached to the music. I place more value in him as a live performer now to make up for the albums deficiencies.

As a musician/live performer, he is the best on the planet but that energy never translates on to his studio records. I think that alot of people should remember that the man is going to be 51 years old. He has moved on mentally and musically (in some cases), so he no longer really needs to always push the envelope. I

The reviewer goes too far but he's not completely off base. Lotusflow3r and MPLSound are good but not above average. Reviewing MPLSound I wrote here on the org, quote:

"There are several good and average songs but no real highlights. The album never takes off to higher levels like other Prince-albums."

Dance 4 Me is slightly above average, but not even that song is close to a 4 out of 5 rating.

Lotusflow3r takes off to a higher level with Colonized Mind and to a minor degree with $ but that's it. For two jointly released albums to almost completely lack highlights is unsatisfying, especially since it's Prince, who has set a high standard. Pick two discs on Emancipation and there are several highlights on each.

The reviewer points out that Prince has made great music since Sign O The Times even up until Planet Earth. I've always felt that Prince was very creative and interesting not just in the 80s. But given the overall tone of the article, I'm sure I like Sign O The Times through PE significantly more than the reviewer does.

The reviewer says he likes Planet Earth much better than the two new ones. I was actually about to make a thread about how I think both PE and 3121 are better than the two new ones, although I doubt I would get a lot of agreement about that.

I think Prince still has a lot of great music in him but he needs to be more selective with what he releases these days.

I thought he was speaking for himself. He just encapsulated what a lot of folks that know have been thinking and/or saying. You too perhaps? You did include yourself with the use of "us".

You said FGFBFW is evident of his mindset...you do realize that is a throwback from a few of years ago right? Most of us heard it before the NPGMC shut down. So if that is your idea of what's evident of his mindset, well...then...uh... you're kind of proving the guy you're trying to berate absolutely right!

And what the hell are you talking about, FG was a few years ago (thats his mindset today!) and it was unfinished back then.

Actually, that was pretty effortless for me. The truth never needs convincing. wink
